A growing contingent of big-name companies - including Walmart, Starbucks and Microsoft - are teaming up with local governments and medical providers to get coronavirus shots in more people s arms.
The public-private efforts come as President Joe Biden has outlined his plans to combat the virus that has killed more than 400,000 Americans, which includes a goal to administer 100 million vaccines in the first 100 days of his administration.
The early stages of vaccine distribution under the Trump administration were marked by confusion and miscommunication. Poor coordination between the federal government and states created shortages in some regions, while severe bottlenecks left others rushing to deliver doses before they expired. Now, as vaccines remain hard to get and the pandemic continues to weigh on the economy ....

Washington Draws on Private-Sector Experts for Vaccine Rollout
Washington state has partnered with companies and organizations like Starbucks, Microsoft and Costco to more effectively roll out its COVID-19 vaccines through a newly created vaccine command and coordination center.

In an effort to streamline the delivery of Washington state s COVID-19 vaccines, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee announced on Monday the state’s plan to create the Washington State Vaccine Command and Coordination Center to meet a goal of vaccinating 45,000 citizens per day.
The center a statewide public-private partnership consisting of Washington corporations, labor unions, health-care groups and government entities will work together to coordinate all available resources to create an infrastructure to deliver vaccines across the state as efficiently as possible. ....

The US Labor Department reported Thursday that first-time unemployment claims fell slightly last week to 900,000, a still historically high number that points to economic problems in a raging COVID-19 pandemic world, according to the Associated Press. Last week s figure was 965,000 claims.
Meanwhile, the government said 5.1 million Americans are still receiving state jobless benefits. The numbers suggest that while some of the unemployed are finding jobs, others are likely using up their state benefits to transition to extended-benefits programs. The article said that the economy has faltered this winter as virus cases spike, cold weather restricts going outside and federal rescue aid expired. ....
