Holton, A. Linwood (1923– ) – Encyclopedia Virginia


SUMMARY
A. Linwood Holton was a governor of Virginia (1970–1974) and the first Republican to hold the office since Reconstruction (1865–1877). Hailing from Big Stone Gap in southwest Virginia, Holton was among the “Mountain and Valley” Republicans who began to gain statewide support in the 1950s in opposition to the Byrd Organization and in support of public school desegregation. Holton won a narrow race for governor in 1969 with a coalition that included a substantial number of African American and white working-class voters. As governor, he declared an end to Massive Resistance, the state’s anti–desegregation policy, announcing, “The era of defiance is behind us.” In 1970, he was photographed escorting his daughter Tayloe into a nearly all-black high school in Richmond. In addition, Holton reorganized the executive branch, worked to clean Virginia’s polluted waters, and helped create a unified Ports Authority in Hampton Roads. He was not able to overcome i ....

An American Airlines flight from Chicago to Reagan National Airport was diverted to Dulles International Airport late Monday after the crew reported a security concern involving a passenger, authorities said.
The nature of the security concern was not immediately disclosed, and officials who searched the plane after it landed found no hazardous materials on board. The allegedly suspicious passenger was not on a watch list, an American Airlines spokesman said.
American Eagle Flight 4117 landed safely shortly before midnight with 45 passengers on board, airline spokesman Tim Smith said, according to the Associated Press. The top security official overseeing the House informed lawmakers this week that security will be heightened on Thursday due to a QAnon-linked conspiracy theory that former President Trump
Acting Sergeant-at-Arms Timothy Blodgett said in a memo that Capitol Police will have additional personnel on duty throughout the Capitol grounds in addition to the continued National Guard presence.
