Hundreds ring in the New Year with Omaha's firework show

Watch selected clips from our best of video journalism in 2020.
For the final few hours of a year full of darkness, light filled the sky above downtown Omaha.
Thousands gathered Thursday night near the CHI Health Center for the New Year’s Eve Fireworks Spectacular.
Some stayed in their parked cars and turned their radios to a local radio station to listen to music choreographed to the show.
Others, including Ahmad Shebli, watched from the sidewalk with their families.

Shebli stood with his wife, his 2- and 7-year-old daughters and 10-year-old son. His son smiled and jumped up and down in excitement as he watched the fireworks.

Holiday Lights suffers grinch worthy thefts

Staff reports
Just as the folks behind Grayson County's Holiday Lights prepared to put the wraps on the 20th season of the display, something slimy slivered in and ripped the cheer out of a number for the displays.
Holiday Lights Elf Services Coordinator Jodi Platt, otherwise known as the county's purchasing agent, said someone stole several thousand feet of wiring from the displays that have brought light and cheer to so many this season and in season past.
"I am  told the value of these cables is over $5,000, but I don’t have official numbers for replacement at this time.  I don’t know if the Lights has made enough money at this point to recover the costs for this season and replace the cables," she said.

'Hoping it lifts peoples' spirits': Omaha-metro prepares for New Year's Eve fireworks

Most of us are excited for the end of 2020, and a lot of people will celebrate with fireworks."We're hoping it lifts peoples' spirits, and hopefully this will be a nice farewell to leave 2020 in the past and be hopeful for 2021," said Kylie Vonnahme, the project manager for Omaha's annual Holiday Lights Festival. The festival wraps up with the 21st season of their signature New Year's Eve Fireworks Spectacular Show."It is very similar to last year," Vonnahame said. "The only difference is that we're highly encouraging everyone to stay in their vehicles to watch the show."The theme for this year's show is "everyday heroes.""(We're) honoring all of the essential workers, and all of our healthcare providers this year as they've been working so hard to keep people in our community as safe as possible," Vonnahme said. The show starts at 7 p.m., but it's best to get there around 6. That's when organizers will offer free parking in MECA lots A, B and C near the CHI Health Center."And also, after 5 p.m. on the 31st, all downtown parking meters will be free for people to park at," Vonnahme added. If you're wanting celebrations of your own, shops like Wild Willy's in Council Bluffs, Springfield and Nebraska City have you covered. "Surprisingly, I had a steady roll of customers. So, people still want their fireworks this year," employee Brady Netzel said. But remember: "You need to make sure you check your city ordinances so when you can light off because every place kind of has their own different ordinance so you want to make sure you're shooting off fireworks safely and when you can," he added.Fireworks can be shot off in Omaha from 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1.In Papillion, they can be shot off from 8 a.m. on New Year's Eve to midnight. In Bellevue, you can shoot them from 9 p.m. on Dec. 31st until 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 1.In Council Bluffs, you can shoot off fireworks from 11 a.m. on New Year's Eve until 1 a.m. on New Year's Day.

New Year's Eve plans move forward despite pandemic

Pandemic aside, families in Northwest Indiana wanting to say goodbye to 2020 can still find plenty of safe and fun places to party hearty this New Year's Eve.
And many of the events are free, including the Festival of Holiday Lights at Washington Park in Michigan City, the town of Highland fireworks display, the Pierogi Drop in Whiting and the Winter Lights Drive-Through at Sunset Hill Farm County Park in Valparaiso.
Families can also travel to Fair Oaks Farms to dine at the Farmhouse Restaurant, enjoy the holiday lights and snack on s'mores and hot chocolate.
And the Lake County Parks Department also offers a number of activities for families including ice skating at Deep River Waterpark in Merrillville and educational playtime events at Bellaboo's in Lake Station.
