Raymond Joseph Simpson, IV, 59, of Patuxent River, MD, passed away on December 16, 2020 at Hospice House of St. Mary s.
He was born on November 30, 1961 in Upper Darby, PA to the late Raymond Joseph Simpson, III and Mary DiCesar Hackett Simpson.
In 1979, Ray enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country until his retirement as an Aviation Electrician s Mate Chief Petty Officer in 2004. During his service he earned many citations, commendations, and medals, and was exceptionally proud of his service. Upon retirement, he was employed at Dyncorp, Northrup Grumman, and most recently, a skilled Logistician for the Department of Defense at NAVAIR Patuxent River on the Fire Scout program. Ray s favorite hobbies included his Camaro Starscream - you could always find him detailing it on the weekend, endlessly trying to attain that shine or cruising it somewhere with a view of the water. After Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Ernest J. King assigned sea-going development of helicopters to the U.S. Coast Guard on 15 February 1943, naval aviation s first designated rotary-wing pilot, Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Frank Erickson, tested and accepted the Navy s first helicopter, an HNS-1, at Bridgeport, Connecticut on 16 October later that year. Thus began a 74-year journey featuring man’s ingenuity, skill, and daring as industry and technology constantly improved the aircraft.
