Leeds Trinity student to represent Team GB in the Para Powerlifting World Cup

A SPORTS and exercise science undergraduate at Leeds Trinity University has been selected to represent Team GB at the Para Powerlifting World Cup.
Charlotte McGuinness, 19, will compete at the event in Manchester in March. The competition also gives her the opportunity to qualify for the rescheduled 2021 Tokyo Paralympic Games, due to take place in August.
Charlotte, who is seventh in the world in her weight category and third in the world for the junior weight category, is supported through the University’s Talented Athlete Support Package, which assists student athletes competing at a high level in their sport to manage their studies and their sports careers. She is currently training four times a week in preparation for the World Cup. She is among a team of 13 athletes selected by British Weight Lifting, and will compete against athletes from across the world in the bench press women up to 50kg category. ....

CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA (AP) A pigeon that Australia declared a biosecurity risk has received a reprieve after a United States (US) bird organisation declared its identifying leg band was fake.
The band suggested the bird found in a Melbourne backyard on December 26 was a racing pigeon that had left the US state of Oregon, 13,000 kilometres away, two months earlier.
On that basis, Australian authorities on Thursday said they considered the bird a disease risk and planned to kill it.
But Sport Development Manager for the Oklahoma-based American Racing Pigeon Union Deone Roberts said on Friday the band was fake.
The band number belongs to a blue bar pigeon in the US which is not the bird pictured in Australia, she said. ....
