Veteran Memorial In Fort Washakie Moving Forward Despite Pandemic

Native Americans serve in the military at five times the national average. On the Wind River Indian Reservation a new memorial will honor them and their non-Native neighbors that have also served in the armed forces.
The Frank Wise building in Fort Washakie has just finished the gazebo where a new memorial will be housed to honor the reservation s veterans. The memorial will include veterans from first military contact to most recent service.
Scott Ratliff has been involved with the project for the last two years. Ratliff was drafted in 1966 at age 24 to serve in Vietnam. He said the memorial is stone and resembles a buffalo. ....

WASHINGTON About 3% of veterans have refused coronavirus vaccines when offered them by the Department of Veterans Affairs an amount lower than the agency anticipated, a VA official said Thursday.
The refusal rate is slightly higher in less populated areas, equating to 4% among veterans in rural places and 5% in areas designated as highly rural. Refusal rates are lower among the populations of Black and Hispanic veterans. ....

Montana veteran who trained Army sled dogs receives congressional record commendation

HELENA, Mont. (Tribune News Service) David Armstrong sat through a small ceremony Tuesday in which he was presented with a congressional record commendation, when he gave a reaction that those who know him said was typical.
It s awfully nice, but I don t think it s necessary, the 100-year-old Armstrong said while sitting in a wheelchair in a nice lawn adjoining his home adjacent to the Archie Bray Foundation. Anybody could do it.
It s probably where he and the handful of people at the ceremony would disagree.
Armstrong is the last known survivor of Camp Rimini, where sled and pack dogs were trained during World War II. He was honored by Sen. Steve Daines, R- Mont., who read a tribute to him into the congressional record honoring his military service and for reaching the 100-year milestone. ....
