Debbie Stabenow Doesn't Know How GOP Senators' Vote Against Stimulus Bill Is a Winning Message

Debbie Stabenow Doesn t Know How GOP Senators Vote Against Stimulus Bill Is a Winning Message
On 3/6/21 at 3:53 PM EST
Following Saturday s Senate vote to pass President Joe Biden s $1.9 trillion COVID relief package, Democratic Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow criticized her Republican colleagues who voted against the package given its bipartisan popularity and the ways it helps so many Americans.
In an interview with MSNBC, Stabenow was asked whether she was disappointed that the votes fell on party lines and no Republicans broke from their party to join their colleagues across the aisle and back the stimulus bill.
The Michigan Democrat noted the bill s popularity across the country, regardless of political affiliation. ....

Biden, Democrats agree to cut weekly jobless benefit by $100

Biden, Democrats agree to cut weekly jobless benefit by $100
In a further cave-in to the right wing, Senate Democrats agreed Friday to reduce the weekly supplemental unemployment benefit in the Biden administration’s coronavirus relief bill by $100 a week, from $400 to $300. This would leave unchanged the wholly inadequate level enacted under Trump, itself a 50 percent cut from the $600 benefit included in last March’s CARES Act.
Only days before, Democratic leaders had presented passage of a $400 weekly benefit as a certainty. The latest concession to the Republicans and the most right-wing congressional Democrats came on the heels of Biden’s decision to drop the income cut-off for receiving a one-time $1,400 stipend from $100,000 and $80,000, depriving millions of working class and middle-class families of desperately needed assistance. That, in turn, was preceded by the dropping of a $15 minimum wage from the bill. ....

11 Hours, 50 Minutes: Vote on Bernie Sanders' Minimum Wage Amendment Breaks Senate Record

11 Hours, 50 Minutes: Vote on Bernie Sanders Minimum Wage Amendment Breaks Senate Record
On 3/6/21 at 11:08 AM EST
The procedural vote to include Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders $15-an-hour minimum wage amendment in the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill ultimately failed but not before breaking the Senate record for longest ever vote.
The record-breaking Senate vote came as many in the upper chamber were already prepared for a long night, with several offices stocking Red Bull energy drinks and snacks in advance. But debate and procedural stoppages occurred for nearly 12 hours, or 11 hours and 50 minutes, before enough moderate Democrats decided to oppose the minimum wage hike. A call between President Joe Biden and West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin was part of the lengthy process, which ended with only 42 senators siding with Sanders. Sanders needed 60 votes to waive the budget rules, which would have allowed him to use reconciliation to push his minimum wage hike ....

Biden And Medicare For All

Democrats overwhelmingly threw their support behind “Medicare for All,” according to data released Tuesday from a
Hill-HarrisX poll.
Increasing support for the national health insurance program may be linked to the coronavirus pandemic. Many businesses have closed permanently, leaving their former employees with no employment-based coverage. Medicare for All, which would create a nationwide single-payer health insurance plan for all Americans, was the cornerstone of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ suspended presidential campaign. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has not embraced the Medicare for All platform although many of Biden’s potential voters support the program.
Out of 948 registered voters who participated in the poll, 87 percent of Democrats said they were in favor of Medicare for All. Independent voters also leaned towards the idea with 69 percent supporting the concept. Less than half of the Republicans surveyed agreed with the ....
