Biden Advances Trump-Era Sale Of $23 Billion In F-35s & Armed Drones To UAE

planning to advance a $23.4 billion sale of weaponry to the United Arab Emirates that was inked under former President Donald Trump, a move anti-war critics denounced as a betrayal of President Joe Biden s recent pledge to end US support for offensive operations in Yemen.
One of the major members of the Saudi-led coalition that has been bombing and strangling Yemen since 2015, the UAE is set to receive
50 F-35 fighter jets, more than a dozen armed drones, and billions of dollars worth of munitions from the US if the deal receives final approval.

President Joe Biden s administration indicated Wednesday it was moving forward with a $23 billion sale of F-35 fighter-jets to the United Arab Emirates but was considering restrictions and would not deliver them soon.
The State Department shortly after Biden s inauguration in January ordered a review of the massive arms package, which was approved by former President Donald Trump when the Gulf ally recognized Israel.
Responding to a lawsuit seeking to block the sale, the State Department said it planned a robust and sustained dialogue with the United Arab Emirates on arms transfers. ....

The Democratic chairman of the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee has said he and other legislators are concerned about the administration of President Joe Biden’s decision to go ahead with a weapons sale to the United Arab Emirates and would review the transactions.
The Biden administration has told Congress it was proceeding with more than $23bn in weapons sales to the UAE, including advanced F-35 aircraft, armed drones and other equipment. Rights groups have condemned the sale, saying it would further stoke violence in Yemen, where the UAE is part of a Saudi Arabia-led coalition in fighting that has lead to the deaths of thousands of civilians and what the UN has called the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. ....
