Tom Kelly: Patriot, prisoner, Jesuit, politician, and the man I simply knew as grandad
For Irish News columnist Tom Kelly, the fateful events of 1921 form the backdrop to a fascinating personal story of the grandfather he is named after. He traces his life from republican patriot, to religious vows, to trade unionist and politician

ON May 3 1921, Northern Ireland was declared a political entity. On May 24 the first elections took place for the new parliament.
In a stunning victory, unionists took all but 12 seats. This was a devastating blow to nationalism in the north. ....

Anti-nuclear activist, MEP Grace O’Sullivan welcomes breakthrough, saying ‘there’s still a long way to go though.’
It’s over 75 years since the appalling news broke that the heavily-populated Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been the victims of nuclear attack. These were the dramatic actions that earmarked the closing days of our second World War.
The impacts of the bombs, so sickeningly dubbed Little Boy and Fat Man, were ferocious.
The playful name tags belied the cruel efficiency with which those man-made harbingers of death undertook their assigned duty. In the immediate wake of the explosions over 200,000 people perished. Many others were left with horrific, life-changing injuries. Pictures of the gnarled flesh of people who suffered severe thermal burns are as disturbing today as they were then. ....

Countess Constance Markievicz: Irish revolutionary

In the 1916 Easter Rising, she became a fully-fledged officer in the Irish Citizen Army and had fought in St. Stephen’s Green during the uprising, eventually surrendering and then sentenced to death.
Because she was a woman, however, Markievicz was spared the death penalty and was given a life sentence. One year later, in 1917, the Countess was given amnesty and released from Ailsbury Gaol in England.
In 1918, Markievicz was elected as a member of Sinn Féin, but due to the abstentionist policy of her party in refusing to swear allegiance to the monarch, she never took her seat in parliament. ....

Documents on Irish Foreign Policy, Volume XII: 1961-1965 recalls a period when a Catholic Irish-American had just been elected to the White House and the biggest foreign policy issue of the day concerned British relations with Europe. Ireland was about to take a seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Welcome to 1961. So much for the similarities, there were also lots of differences too from the themes of today. For starters, Britain was desperately trying to  ....

15 December 2020

Statements on the 50th anniversary of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and on the entry-into-force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons
Opening Remarks

2020 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the entry into force of Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty; a treaty closely associated with Ireland, and the cornerstone of the global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime. Ireland also ratified the Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons this year; it will enter into force on 22 January 2021. These Treaties demonstrate our longstanding leadership in this area. It is fitting that Dáil Éireann acknowledges both milestones and I thank Deputies Eoghan Murphy and Duncan Smith for their initiative in proposing this Debate. ....
