How to design anti-discrimination policies that actually work

I
N 1969 JULIUS LESTER published a book about the black-power movement called, “Look Out, Whitey! Black Power’s Gon’ Get Your Mama!” Since then, approaches to managing friction between different racial groups have become less confrontational and more professional. For many American institutions this takes the form of diversity training.
Like most city forces, the Minneapolis police department puts its officers through diversity training. Tanya Gladney, an ex-cop who has trained officers in nearby St Paul, says such training became standard in police departments 15 or 20 years ago. It has not stopped forces from shooting unarmed citizens, a disproportionate share of them black men. The curriculum has been tweaked and extended to incorporate the latest research into “unconscious bias”. Since then, in Minneapolis alone, Jamar Clark was shot dead by a white officer while pinned on the pavement in 2015; Philando Castile was shot dead by a Latino officer while inside his own car in 2016; and Justine Damond, an Australian woman who called the police about a possible assault, was shot dead by the Somali-American officer who arrived to investigate in 2017.

Sabrina Skolnick (Hadassah)
Hadassah, The Women s Zionist Organization of America, Inc. (HWZOA), is pleased to announce the 2021 winners of its Leaders of Tomorrow Award for Young Women. Sabrina Skolnick, 16, of Atlanta, Ga. will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Israel to participate in the Gesher (formerly Machon) annual summer leadership program of Young Judaea. The oldest Zionist youth movement in the United States, Young Judaea encourages young people to become involved in social and educational activities that sharpen their Jewish and Zionist identity.
The Leaders of Tomorrow scholarships are awarded following a merit-based competition. They are given to young women who, because of the leadership roles they have taken on as students, have demonstrated their potential to assume even greater leadership roles as adults, potentially at Hadassah.

Oxbridge spends £10,000 on unconscious and implicit bias training

Oxford and Cambridge Universities have been blasted for spending £10,000 on controversial unconscious and implicit biased training.
The elite institutions spent the eye-watering total teaching staff to understand how our biases influence the decisions we make , new figures show.
Oxford has spent £1,000 per year on implicit bias training since it was first introduced in August 2015.
But Cambridge spent a staggering £5,000 setting up its course for staff between 2016 and 2017, a Freedom of Information request revealed.
The Free Speech Union slammed the expensive ideological snake oil spoon fed by people who would have struggled to get into Cambridge themselves .
It comes after a landmark review into racial inequality urged for unconscious bias training to be scrapped for workers and replaced with more effective practices.

How Students Are Furthering Academe’s Corporatization
By insisting on bureaucratic solutions to diversity problems, they are empowering administrations at the expense of the faculty.

This past fall, the Core Strike Collective,
a collection of student groups at Bryn Mawr College, submitted a list of 16 demands to the college administration. At the top was a call for mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion training for students, faculty, and staff. The students, insisting on robust “quantitative and qualitative assessments,” asked for a data dashboard to track 38 proposed equity metrics concerning recruitment, retention, and financing.
Demands for diversity training and other DEI initiatives such as bias-response teams have been central to student protests against racial injustice since 2015 andhaveonlyproliferated in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Many student demands have been framed in terms of resisting capitalism, corporate logic,
