Committee discusses bill to extend Medicaid coverage to inmates prior to release

The House Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee discussed the Medicaid Reentry Act of 2021 during a hearing on substance misuse and the opioid epidemic on Wednesday. The bill, which is sponsored by Congressman Paul Tonko, would allow states to make Medicaid coverage available for incarcerated individuals up to 30 days prior to release.
Current law doesn’t allow incarcerated individuals to enroll in Medicaid until after being released.
 
 
In a letter to Tonko and other members of Congress, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) reasoned that allowing coverage prior to release would help connect individuals to care and would reduce recidivism. ....

The coronavirus pandemic is erupting anew in youth sports across the U.S., prompting fresh warnings from President Joe Biden’s health advisers and adding a headwind to his push to reopen classrooms.
Several states have faced recent outbreaks linked to sporting events and to a variant of the virus from the U.K. called B.1.1.7. Michigan is an epicenter both of the latest surge and the U.K. variant, which is regarded as more transmissible than the original strain of the virus and may be deadlier.
Elementary, middle and high schools have driven the outbreak in Michigan more than any other setting, largely through sports such as basketball and wrestling, according to data compiled by the state. ....

In tears, Courtney Ross told a courtroom in Minnesota that her relationship with boyfriend George Floyd involved a “classic story” of addiction to opioids.
“Addiction, in my opinion, is a lifelong struggle and something that we dealt with every day,” she said during the fourth day of the criminal trial of Derek Chauvin, a now-former Minneapolis Police Department officer charged with murdering Mr Floyd, whose death galvanised an international movement for justice for the killings of Black Americans by police.
Her remarks – among several emotional testimonies that underscored the powerlessness and distress felt by many Americans who have experienced police violence – has also revived national coverage of a crisis that has killed more than 800,000 Americans over two decades. ....
