Mutant roots reveal how we can grow crops in damaged soils

Heavy farming machinery contributes to the compaction of soils over time.

Climate change is set to make these losses even greater. That’s because, when compaction is combined with drought, crop yields can reduce by up to 75%, which is estimated to cost farmers billions of dollars each year. As droughts become more common, developing crops resistant to these challenges becomes more important.
Despite its clear importance for farmers across the world, the mechanism behind stunted root growth in compacted soil has remained unclear. Roots that failed to penetrate highly compacted soils were simply considered too weak to do so. However, we have discovered that roots are in fact able to penetrate highly compacted soil after their sensitivity to a plant hormone signal is disrupted. ....

Steve Hall's one-man "Hunger Strike" – Elmore Magazine

January 13th, 2021
Steve Hall, a venture capital tech investor and amateur musician, combined his two interests during quarantine and, unexpectedly, became famous.
Growing up steeped in the Pacific Northwest grunge scene, Hall decided to cover favorites Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) and Chris Cornell’s (Sound-garden) collaborative “Hunger Strike,” recorded when the two performed in supergroup Temple of The Dog. No band? No problem. Like many musicians during quarantine, Hall dragged out his guitar and his bass, drums and vocal mic and shifted his tech focus from the NASDAQ to hands-on, plug-in technology. Hall played all instruments, sang all parts, recorded and, with some help from his kid brother nearly 3,000 miles away, mixed the tracks, and shot and edited the video truly a one-man band. ....

Shannon Clark & the Sugars ask: "Carry Me" – Elmore Magazine

January 13th, 2021
Shannon and Brittany Clark joined the Warped Tour in the mid-2000s, but the music stopped with the loss of their younger daughter. Songwriting brought them back, and the two revived the band. Their older daughter, Navie, joined in 2019, and Shannon Clark & the Sugar was born.
The band partnered with international award winning filmmaker Shawn Spitler to film a music video for “Carry Me.” Shot in and around their home of Darke County, the song was very personal for the family. Shannon Clark recalled, “The song is about coming home and it just made sense.” Shannon told
Elmore, “This video impacted me in a way that I never looked at our song the same way. It was a song about the loss of family and the struggle with finding comfort in places you never thought to look , but turned into a much bigger anthem, the struggle we all face at just being happy.” ....
