Gerry Fine Retiring after Years of Teaching, and Promoting, Innovation at BU

Wariness welcomed Gerry Fine four years ago when he was named to head Innovate@BU, an ambitious incubator for students’ cutting-edge ideas. “Our skeptics assumed that we would simply focus on tech start-ups emanating from engineering [students] and Questrom School of Business,” Fine recalls. Having a College of Engineering professor of the practice of mechanical engineering in the driver’s seat probably reinforced that impression.
But the feared parochialism never happened. Collaborating with Blake Sims, Innovate@BUsocial ventures program director, Innovate@BU has guided Terriers from across the University to develop their ideas, such as RefEd, an app with course instruction for refugee students lacking educational materials. The designers have hailed from schools all over the University, including Sargent College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences and Wheelock College of Education & Human Development. ....

BU Will Hold Two Separate 2021 Commencement Ceremonies May 16 on Nickerson Field

Graduate degree recipients attend the morning ceremony, undergraduates the afternoon ceremony
Government COVID-19 gathering limits preclude single ceremony on Nickerson Field
The 148th Boston University Commencement on May 16 already historically reconfigured by COVID-19 is getting another unprecedented makeover: it will now consist of two separate ceremonies, a morning one for graduate degree recipients and an afternoon gathering for bachelor’s degree recipients, both on Nickerson Field.
The change, announced Friday in a letter to candidates for graduation by President Robert A. Brown, was necessitated by anticipated high attendance, based on a survey of graduating students. City and state limits on gathering sizes make it impossible to accommodate both graduate degree and undergraduate degree recipients on Nickerson Field simultaneously, even with previously announced restrictions that prevents families and guests of graduates from attending. ....

Unsung Heroes of the Pandemic

A year ago this week, Boston University made the unprecedented announcement that it was shutting down dorms and sending students home as the COVID-19 pandemic surged in Boston.
As the one-year anniversary of that historic move approached, we invited members of the BU community to tell us their unsung heroes of the pandemic a teacher, student, staff person, or alum who made a difference in their life, and the life of the University.
We heard from dozens of you, giving shout-outs across the University, from BU’s Facilities staff to some of the many COVID collection site specialists to the Residence Life staff. Together, these folks have helped all of us weather this extraordinarily challenging year. ....

BU Community Writes Joe Biden's Inaugural Address | BU Today

At noon on Wednesday, January 20, Joe Biden, a former Democratic US senator from Delaware and vice president under Barack Obama, will be sworn in as the nation’s 46th president, succeeding Donald Trump and ending what might be the most tumultuous presidency in history. And Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) will be sworn in as the nation’s first woman vice president. In keeping with tradition, Biden will deliver an inaugural address, laying out his plans and hopes. Perhaps more so than ever before, viewers will be listening for how the new president aims to reunite and heal a nation reeling from a pandemic, systemic racism, a sluggish economy, and painfully deep political divides that culminated in an attack on the US Capitol just two weeks ago that left five people dead and a disgraced Trump impeached for a second time. ....
