29 teams participate learn in The Amazing Race: Salem for Refugees edition

More than 100 community members participated this weekend in a local event inspired by the hit reality show The Amazing Race.
The Amazing Race: Salem for Refugees Edition took place Saturday morning, with 29 teams speeding through the scavenger hunt in downtown and central Salem. 
The event served as a COVID-friendly fundraiser for the nonprofit Salem for Refugees, which provides a host of services to refugees resettling in the Salem area. These resources include help with childcare, job placement, transportation, interpretive services, school enrollment and housing support.
Nearly 67,750 refugees have resettled in Oregon from 1975 to 2018, the latest data available from Oregon Department of Human Services. ....

SALEM, Ore. Selma Pierce and her son Michael were out for an evening walk in early December less than a half mile from her west Salem home when she entered Doaks Ferry Road to cross the street.  
The sun had set on the chilly day, with a temperature around 42 degrees as the pair walked out of their neighborhood toward a road that leads to Highway 22 from the steep hills of west Salem. ....

Montgomery: The state on Monday launched an online portal for people to check their eligibility for COVID-19 vaccinations and make appointments. The Alabama Department of Public Health said the site at alcovidvaccine.gov will allow those eligible to make an appointment if shots are available in their county of choice. The portal also provides information about additional drive-thru and walk-in clinics being offered. Starting next Monday, Alabama will expand who is eligible for the vaccine to everyone 65 and older, educators, court officials, corrections officers, postal employees, grocery store workers, some manufacturing workers, public transit workers, agriculture employees, state legislators and constitutional officers. SALEM, Ore. (AP) - A temporary homeless shelter opened this week at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem.
The Pavilion at the fairgrounds can house 100 people and has been largely unused after the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancelation of events, The Statesman Journal reported.
An undetermined number of people also will be able to use the adjacent parking lot as a safe vehicle camping spot.

The temporary shelter is partly being paid for by the City of Salem, which allocated $733,000 in November for homeless shelters, and the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency. ....
