Unlike the XS-1-1, which was flown by the Air Force, the XS-1-2 was flown mostly by Bell and NACA pilots. It gathered much more research data than the more famous XS-1-1, known as Glamorous Glennis. A little while back, we began a series of articles looking at the air-test work which NASA and its forebear, the N.A.C.A., conducted at their facility in the Mojave Desert, located within the massive military test complex now known as Edwards Air Force Base. The civilian-run organization has often conducted its aerospace tests with active-duty military aircraft on bailment, with data shared back and forth to either help the U.S. aerospace industry, or the military itself. ....

Terror in the Stratosphere - American Aerospace

American Aerospace
Sixty-seven years ago this month, USAF Major Charles E. Yeager set an unofficial world speed record of 1,650 mph (Mach 2.44) in the Bell X-1A flight research aircraft. In the process, the legendary test pilot very nearly lost his life when the aircraft departed controlled flight shortly after rocket motor burnout.
The USAF/Bell X-1A was a second generation X-aircraft intended to explore flight beyond Mach 2. It measured 35.5 feet in length and had a wing span of 28 feet. Gross take-off weight was 16,500 pounds.
Like its XS-1 forebear, the X-1A was powered by an XLR-11 rocket motor which produced a maximum sea level thrust of 6,000 lbs. The XLR-11 burned 9,200 pounds of propellants (alcohol and liquid oxygen) in roughly 270 seconds of operation. ....

Memories of Chuck Yeager | Aerotech News & Review

By Cathy Hansen, special to Aerotech News
When I look at this picture of my husband Al with General Chuck Yeager, it brings back fond memories of the Edwards Air Show in October 2002.
Al flew his Canadair F-86E out for static display and I flew backseat in a Canadair CT-133 (T-33 Thunderbird) that belongs to Charlie Wallasch. It only takes a couple of minutes to fly from Mojave Airport to Edwards AFB, but the preparation time of getting clearances, etc. takes many hours! The weather really cooperated and it was a wonderful air show.
Al met up with Gen. Chuck Yeager and it was fun to stand back and just watch and listen. They have known each for many years. Yeager once said, “Fame makes you kind of cautious, a bit anxious to guard your privacy.” It was good to see him relax a little while talking over old times with Al. ....
