NHL On Tap: Jets look to extend winning streak against Canucks

Maple Leafs trying to shut down Oilers again, Blues-Ducks highlight seven-game schedule
NHL.com @NHLdotcom
Welcome to the NHL On Tap. Three NHL.com writers will share what they are most looking forward to on the schedule each day. Today, their choices from the seven games Monday.
Jets are flying
Don't look now, but the Winnipeg Jets are on a roll. They've won four straight games and will look to extend their streak when they host the first half of a back-to-back set against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday (8 p.m. ET; TVAS, TSN3, SNP, NHL.TV). There's a lot going right for the Jets, who are third in the Scotia North Division, one point behind the second-place Edmonton Oilers. Winnipeg has scored 14 goals during its four-game winning streak and is third in the NHL averaging 3.45 goals per game. Forward Mark Scheifele, whose six-game goal streak ended in a 2-1 overtime win against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, leads the Jets with 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) in 20 games. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck has been steady again this season, going 10-5-1 with a 2.56 goals-against average and .918 save percentage, helping Winnipeg rank seventh in the NHL with a 2.60 GAA. The Jets want to keep a good thing going heading into March and that starts Monday against the Canucks. --

Matthews practices with Maple Leafs, 'not ruled out' against Oilers

Matthews out for Maple Leafs against Oilers again
Forward was game-time decision, wrist injury keeps him out for second straight at Edmonton
NHL.com @NHLdotcom
Auston Matthews is not playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Edmonton Oilers on Monday because of a wrist injury.
Matthews was a game-time decision after he was on the ice with Toronto's extra skaters earlier in the day. The Maple Leafs did not have a full morning skate.
Matthews missed a 4-0 win against the Oilers on Saturday but practiced Sunday.
"He's progressed here today compared to where he's been in the last few days," Keefe said Sunday. "That's very positive here. He's not ruled out for tomorrow. We're just going to have to see how he is."

Ken Dryden calls it "a rivalry of cities, a rivalry of cultures."
The Hockey Hall of Fame goalie has seen the duel between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs from each side, a legend in goal with the Canadiens during their glorious 1970s, a president of his hometown Maple Leafs from 1997-2003.
"All of a sudden now, Toronto and Montreal are playing a whole pile of games against each other," Dryden said. "There's a pretty good chance they're going to end up playing each other in a playoff.

Canadian division power rankings: Habs charge out of the gates

While this start for the Ottawa Senators has been disappointing, it is, frankly, not that surprising.
The Sens are still super young with room to grow with the right pieces. Brady Tkachuk, Nicolas Paul, and Thomas Chabot are developing, and they are starting to show up in positive ways.
But in the here and now, the biggest disappointment for Ottawa this season has been in net. Newcomer Matt Murray has just not been the answer the Sens were hoping for. He has a goals-against average over four, and a save percentage at .862. That’s bad. Like really bad. Like third-worst in the league bad.
