Longtime professor at Keystone College and founder of Fleetville observatory dies at 81

After decades spent fostering interest in the wild beauty of the universe, “Coop” took his place among the heavens.
A fixture at Keystone College and founder and namesake of the Thomas G. Cupillari ‘60 Astronomical Observatory, the longtime physics, math and astronomy teacher died Sunday morning after a year-long battle with cancer, his family said. He was 81.
“Known affectionally as ‘Coop’ to almost all who met him, Professor Cupillari was loved and respected by everyone at Keystone for his work educating students in the classroom and at the (observatory) in nearby Fleetville, which he founded and directed for so many years,” college spokesman Fran Calpin said in a statement. “He was a true Keystonian and exemplified the values of Keystone each and every day. He will be greatly missed by all.” ....

President-elect Joe Biden likes to joke how he had to leave Scranton’s Green Ridge neighborhood and move to Delaware because he knew that Casey guy down the street would block his political path in Pennsylvania.
The timelines don’t match up, of course. Biden was still a kid when his family moved around 1952 or 1953, and future Gov. Robert P. Casey Sr. graduated from Holy Cross College in 1953, but the joke carries a point. ....
