Foss: Exploring the Binnekill

Peter Pasternak discovered the Binnekill while kayaking.
The small inlet was once a major waterway, where goods such as fur and rum were traded and shipped and people traveling west embarked on their journeys.
A painting by Capital Region artist Len Tantillo, titled “Schenectady Harbor, 1814,” shows the wharves, warehouses and boat-building facilities that grew up around the Binnekill, making it a forerunner to the Erie Canal.
Today the Binnekill is mostly forgotten – a hidden, somewhat anonymous shadow of its former self.
The stream runs behind Washington Avenue in Schenectady’s Stockade Neighborhood and empties into the Mohawk River. It’s bordered by private property, accessible mainly by boat.

GAZETTE COVERAGE
Imagine being a reporter assigned to cover the event, and you’re there with your pencil and pad ready to take notes when the two scientists meet in New Brunswick, New Jersey at RCA headquarters, about 40 miles outside New York. As they rush to greet each other, both wearing broad smiles, you’re hoping to catch every word of the conversation only to be hugely disappointed. The two great minds are speaking in German.
That’s how one newspaper reported the historical meeting, and if you’re a Steinmetz fan it’s one of many stories that make the man so endearing. The famous Einstein meets Steinmetz photograph from 100 years ago this week commemorates the meeting of the two men and others, and while you may have seen an image with just Steinmetz and Einstein pictured, that photo was the creation of the GE publicity department much later. That day in New Brunswick, New Jersey, there was a throng of individuals in the photo with them, including a few more of GE’s brightest minds, such as Ernst Alexanderson and Irving Langmuir.

Those of us who know the entire Chester Alan Arthur story – and that group includes Schenectady history buffs as well as most anyone with an emotional connection to Union College – can’t help but like him.
His life and career had some ups and downs, but it’s indisputable that when faced with some big decisions, the man – he was not always an astute politician – responded in exemplary fashion. That’s how many fans of Arthur view him, and after a decade of research on the man, author Jerry Mikorenda feels pretty much the same way. A Brooklyn native, Long Island resident and 1978 University at Albany graduate, Mikorenda will discuss Arthur Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a zoom lecture for the Schenectady County Historical Society. His presentation, and his 2019 book, published by Lyons Books, are titled “America’s First Freedom Rider: Elizabeth Jennings, Chester A. Arthur, and the Early Fight for Civil Rights.”

In the city of Schenectady’s long history, the 15 eventful years before and after the turn of the 20th century have no parallel. Those three decades, you could say, were electric.
Well, times in the “Electric City” have changed, and, according to Golub Corp. Executive Board President Neil Golub, Schenectady needs a new nickname.
During an hour-long presentation before the City Council last week, Golub suggested that Schenectady Metro better represents current-day Schenectady and its accomplishments of the past three decades.
