A photograph that captured a Swampscott police officer and toddler performing crossing-guard duty on Friday has gone viral locally on social networks.
Swampscott Police Officer Kevin Reen has forged a special friendship with Nate and Daniela Fontes-Fried’s three-year-old son, Ethan, since the local patrolman recently began an occasional crossing-guard duty at a Stanley Elementary School crosswalk.
“We started covering crossing-guard duties because a few guards resigned,” said Reen on Sunday evening.
The Fontes-Fried family and their dog, Calvin, live in the stand-alone, single-family home directly in front of Stanley School.

Residents launch ballot-question committee, hire lawyer

A group of Swampscott residents has officially launched a Save Our Schools campaign against the town s proposed 900-student elementary school that voters will, at some point, weigh in on. The ballot-question committee is also hiring a lawyer for its fight.
“We’re for smaller schools for smaller children,” said Gail Brock, who chairs the Save Our Schools ballot committee. “We’re for sharing the traffic and congestion that occurs around the schools and for preserving the wetlands and endangered specials that live in the area.”
