DSNY unveils their new large-scale compost bagging machine in Fresh Kills

STATEN ISLAND N.Y. –– The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) kicks off International Compost Awareness Week by unveiling a large-scale compost bagging machine.
The Hamer Fischbein 2090, located at the DSNY Staten Island Compost Facility in Fresh Kills, is bagging up to 600 pallets of compost per week with a total of 1.9 million bags annually.
The compost is made from yard waste and food scraps that are collected at 125 drop-off sites around the city.
“Everybody who feeds this facility is doing the right thing and the fact that Staten Island is going to be the premier place for composting in New York City, it’s very exciting,” said DSNY Commissioner Edward Grayson. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that the city’s sustainability programs will return in full swing with expanded capabilities this fiscal year.
The Earth Day announcement from de Blasio came a year after composting and food scrap programs were put on pause due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Now, programs will be fully restored with even more accessibility than before, according to the mayor. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Staten Island has a rich history revolving around people of African descent who were freed from enslavement - from Sandy Ground to stops along the Underground Railroad.
Public historian Debbie-Ann Paige, whose expertise is in the history of communities of color on Staten Island, will be presenting about Black history and the Underground Railroad on Staten Island at LibertyCon 2021. ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The Staten Island Museum will host its Earth Day festivities virtually this year.
Once again, the “How-To Fest” will give participants step-by-step tutorials on activities such as planting, identifying trees and hiking through local trails. The festival, based online, will begin Thursday, April 22.
“After a successful virtual event last year, we are thrilled to be offering our annual Earth Day How-To Festival online again this year,” said Janice Monger, Staten Island Museum president and CEO. Many presenters are returning with new how-tos to celebrate and share their expertise. The How-To Festival gives people the opportunity to learn new skills and access a bevy of knowledge about the environment, right from their own homes.” ....

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Staten Island Urban Center’s Young Women’s Leadership Group (YWL Group) has chosen art as a vehicle to bring awareness to Staten Island’s environmental challenges.
YWL Group describes “The Landfill Fashionista: Image, Environment, and Culture Through the Lens of Girls of Color” as “a multimedia art exhibition that highlights the need for environmental justice against the backdrop of the beautiful hope that exists for Staten Island’s North Shore communities.” ....
