Over the last several months, the NYPD has insisted that it is working to increase transparency and accountability ahead of an April 1st state deadline for police reforms. But at a City Council hearing on Tuesday, the NYPD’s leadership declined to publish more comprehensive data on police misconduct investigations.
“The mayor’s plan promises full transparency in NYPD discipline, but the website the NYPD launched this week is limited to guilty findings from formal charges,” said Queens Councilmember Adrienne Adams, referring to the NYPD’s new officer misconduct database. ....

On Tuesday, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals threw out a challenge from a coalition of police and other unions that sought to bar New York City agencies from releasing thousands of previously secret NYPD disciplinary records. The decision could usher in unprecedented public access to the NYPD’s closely-guarded disciplinary records.
While we wait for the unions to announce whether they will appeal the ruling, Gothamist/WNYC has gained access to a small trove of the NYPD’s misconduct findings and disciplinary decisions, giving us a unique window into what the larger release of NYPD records could reveal. The records were released by the Staten Island District Attorney’s Office, in response to a Freedom of Information Law request by the media organization. In 2019, the Staten Island District Attorney’s Office quietly purchased software from Clearview AI, a controversial facial recognition company. Unlike traditional facial recognition tools, which draw on government databases of mugshots or driver’s licenses, Clearview’s expansive program allows users to search for potential face matches from over three billion photos scraped from sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Venmo, and YouTube. Users upload the image of a person of interest, and the program returns photos deemed to look similar with links to the corresponding websites. ....
