10 of Britain's best outdoor pools in the countryside | Swimming holidays

Last modified on Thu 22 Apr 2021 05.43 EDT
There have been some benefits to a worldwide pandemic. There was the farmer who grumbled to me that he was having to douse his fields with extra minerals because, in his words: “We’re just not getting the air pollution we used to.” And then there’s all the people who have taken up cold-water swimming, no doubt hoping to boost their immune systems (the evidence remains equivocal: this academic paper is worth reading).
I’ll own up here: I did wild swim every day until early December, when the water temperature was 2C, and then one day, in a downpour of freezing rain and a moment of deep personal insight, I realised how much I like warm water. Many others, made of sterner stuff, have kept it going, but now with lockdown easing there is the chance to swim outdoors in beautiful countryside without being chased by dragonflies, standing in sheep poo or swallowing algae (all things I experienced before retiring). ....

‘As a venue for hiking and fell running, Stanage Edge is unbeatable’ – Kevin Rushby
When we were kids it was always UK holidays, usually under canvas, and always recalled with affection. I have no problem giving up foreign travel for a while, although I do miss the sheer scale and biodiversity of distant wildernesses and worry about the communities who invested hope, and effort, in tourism as a way of holding off the oilmen, gold prospectors and road diggers. I’m praying they hang on. We will return! ....

Tyler is reaching new heights for Fortalice

Tyler Coleman
A MAN took on Peak District Stanage Edge VS challenge to raise vital funds for local domestic abuse and violence charity, Fortalice.
Tyler Coleman – technical Manager at Itac Adhesives navigated 36 rock faces across the Stanage Edge which feature complex formations, slabs, walls, cracks, and overhangs – some more difficult and dangerous than others.
He became the 56th person to have completed the challenge and an amazing £385 has been raised for Fortalice so far. Tyler climbed all 36 rock faces in 14.5 hours, so beat his realistic target of 16 hours. He is delighted with the result, although vows “never again”!
He said: The temperature was -3 degrees when we started at 5:30am and never really warmed up throughout the day – the wind was biting! I think the hardest thing was not being able to feel the rocks when I was climbing as my hands and fingers were so numb! It’s quite a scary feeling when relying on the best grip possible to ....
