Portsmouth Peace Treaty Living Memorial Cherry trees blossom in Portsmouth

Portsmouth Peace Treaty Living Memorial cherry trees blossom in Portsmouth
Staff Report
PORTSMOUTH – The Portsmouth Peace Treaty Living Memorial Cherry Trees are in bloom all around the Seacoast and across New Hampshire, as a reminder and celebration of New Hampshire history and the citizen diplomacy that helped end the Russo-Japanese War.
The cherry trees in Portsmouth are particularly noticeable on the bank of South Mill Pond next to City Hall. The large trees were a gift in 1985 from Portsmouth’s Sister City Nichinan Japan, where Baron Komura the lead Japanese negotiator at the 1905 peace conference was born. The smaller trees were planted in 2012, after the Japan-America Society of NH(JASNH) learned that the iconic Washington, D.C., cherry trees celebrate the Portsmouth Peace Treaty. The Japanese Foreign Ministry offered cherry trees descended from those yoshino cherry trees to 32 cities around the United States, including Portsmouth and the JASNH started plan ....

Historic Portsmouth: Old magazine story touts touring city in a Ford

I’m a sucker for old musty magazine articles about Portsmouth, the mustier the better. This one has the distant scent of mildew and White Owl Panetelas. I paid too much for it since the story about Portsmouth runs only three pages out of 130 total. This 1955 issue of “New England Journeys,” however, has a lot to offer on the history of Portsmouth tourism, one of my favorite topics.
As I noted earlier this week we became “The City of the Open Door” in the early 1920s. The slogan, created by the newly formed Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, was designed to attract both industry and tourists. It worked, but not in a big way until after World War II. By the 1950s, families were packing their kids into their Ford station wagon and hitting the road. I know because I was one of them.  ....

April 14, 2021
This list was compiled by the NH Granite State Ambassadors with special thanks to Emily Goulet
Spring is here and hope beckons. Maybe soon, maybe even now, we can begin to chip our way out of the shells we’ve been in since the beginning of the pandemic. Was it just a year ago? Seems like a generation, but all that time spent in our bubbles will just make it that much sweeter when we re-encounter and re-embrace the wondrous attractions of the Granite State. ....

Scott Weidensaul comes to The Music Hall's historical stage

Portsmouth Herald
PORTSMOUTH On Tuesday, April 20 at 7 p.m., ornithologist, naturalist, and Pulitzer finalist Scott Weidensaul comes to The Music Hall’s stage as part of the Innovation + Leadership series. Weidensaul will discuss his new nature book A World On The Wing, an exhilarating exploration of the science and wonder of global bird migration in the face of climate change.
“Weidensaul’s writing on the extraordinary journeys birds take around the world makes this book the ultimate guide,” says Jameson French, CEO of Northland Forest Products and the evening’s moderator. “As a lifelong birder, I’m looking forward to the knowledge he will share with us about migration patterns and the challenges birds face, and we’re lucky to have him as a resident of New Hampshire!” ....
