St. Martin News Network - SafeSeal Emblem for La Vista Resort.

Published: 15 March 2021
PHILIPSBURG:--- Last week March 8th, La Vista Resort received its Platinum SafeSeal recognition. SafeSeal is an immediately recognizable emblem for companies that are verified that they adhere to strict cleanliness and hygiene guidelines to counter the COVID-19 pandemic. The platinum level is obtained when resorts pass both an online exam, and in-house training.
At first glance for its many regular visitors, La Vista did not change much – but that is because small interventions can carry great effect. General Manager Andrea Bartlett noted, "The majority of our guests enjoy laying in either the sun or the shade at either of our two on-site pools. In order to encourage social distancing while enjoying themselves at the pool, we have arranged all lounge chairs in sets of two, about 6 feet apart from each other. This allows our guests to still enjoy a relaxing day by the pool without having to worry about their neighbors being too close to them. We also have signage reminding guests of the COVID-19 practices such as keeping your distance, washing/sanitizing hands frequently, and many more.” Additionally, beach towel pick-up locations are now contactless and La Vista streamlined its check-in and check-out process to minimize the amount of time guests need to spend at the front desk when they arrive and before they leave.

St. Martin News Network - SMMC facilitates the installation of pedestrian crossing on Welgelegen Road.

Published: 12 March 2021
CAY HILL:--- in an effort to increase the safety of staff, visitors, and all pedestrians, St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) has facilitated the installation of two pedestrian crossings on the Welgelegen Road.
Due to the construction of the new St. Maarten General Hospital (SMGH) and several essential upgrades to the existing hospital such as the construction of an MRI Suite, an Operating Room Complex and five (5) new double patient rooms, parking facilities on-premise are not sufficient.
As such, patients are allowed to make use of the parking facilities (first three rows of the unpaved section) at the Belair Community Center.

St. Martin News Network - March 12 marks one-year since last commercial cruise call. Cruise industry stakeholders and consumers optimistic about the future.

Published: 11 March 2021
POINTE BLANCHE:---  The Caribbean region as the largest cruise destination of the industry is still waiting for the resumption of the cruise, and this would also include Port St. Maarten as one of the primary ports of call in the northeastern Caribbean.
Friday, March 12 marks one year since the last commercial cruise call to Port St. Maarten due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“No one initially thought that the cruise business would have been interrupted beyond a year. We have taken the time during the pandemic to further strengthen our internal compliance protocols and procedures and business resumption planning, thereby becoming more resilient, and proactive while remaining connected with our local and international stakeholders as we look forward to rebounding stronger when the resumption of cruise tourism sets sail,” Port St. Maarten Management said on Thursday.

St. Martin News Network - Parliament Follows Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs' Decolonization Initiative While Adopting Dutch Jurists' Claims of Racism in the Caribbean

Parliament Follows Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs' Decolonization Initiative While Adopting Dutch Jurists' Claims of Racism in the Caribbean
Published: 12 March 2021
PHILIPSBURG:--- In September of 2015, former Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs became one of the first St. Maarteners to question the Netherlands regarding the United Nations' doubts as to whether the Kingdom Charter had decolonized the islands of the former Netherlands Antilles.  He went on to profess that the United Nations had serious doubts regarding the sincerity of The Netherlands to decolonize the former Netherlands Antilles.  Continuing the groundwork laid down by former Prime Minister Gumbs, the Parliament of St. Maarten submitted a petition to two organs of the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner (OHCHR) with the central premise being that there is unequal and racially biased treatment exercised between Dutch citizens in the Netherlands and Dutch citizens in the Caribbean.

St. Martin News Network - Member of Parliament Van Raak: Suspend financial aid to Sint Maarten

Published: 12 March 2021
The Hague:--- Suspend financial support to Sint Maarten. Member of Parliament Ronald van Raak (SP) makes this appeal via written questions to State Secretary Raymond Knops (BZK).
Van Raak fears that the investments that the Netherlands plans to make to help Sint Maarten through the corona crisis will only be successful if there is sufficient support in the States. A majority of the state in an indictment submitted to the UN this week that the Netherlands is reviving colonialism through the reform program - otherwise approved by the Jacobs cabinet.
"Do you share the view of the majority of politicians in Sint Maarten that the large financial support for the inhabitants of the island is a form of oppression, racism, and colonialism?" asks Van Raak. He thinks that the people of Sint Maarten should be asked whether they support the independence wish of the government parties.
