In 1910 – on the way to the waterfront mills in Edmonds
Nothing depicts the early days of the town of Edmonds more than timber. It was what brought many New England and Eastern people here; and also, the farmers from the Midwest. On the East Coast, they had pretty much depleted their own forests, and in the Midwest, the farmers were just plain worn out from fighting the weather, mainly in the form of dust storms and droughts.

To me, this photo is one of the best reminders of early day Edmonds, and the richness of the timber.  And, if you enjoy eating at Chanterelle’s Hometown Bistro between Third and Fourth on Main Street, you should recognize it as it looked in 1910 the building is on the right in this photo.  It really hasn’t changed that much. Changing Planet, Common Ground

“We have no greater concern than the future of this planet and the life upon it.”
In many ways this statement sums up the essence of Indigenous wisdom, a worldview that recognizes human connection to the planet and also emphasizes respect and responsibility for the Earth.
These words, however, are not quoted from the speech of an American Indian leader. They were taken from the 1988 report, “Earth System Science: A Closer View,” by a NASA advisory council, the Earth Systems Sciences Committee. The committee was tasked in 1983 with creating direction for NASA’s Earth Sciences Program.
This report is part of the “Bretherton Report,” named after committee chairman Francis Bretherton of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Released in two volumes, “Earth System Science: An Overview” (1985) and “Earth System Science: A Closer View” (1988), the report is considered a seminal contribution to the discipline of Earth System Science and its approac ....

Russell Nathan Bearrows

Russell (Russ) Nathan Bearrows, 73, a longtime Livermore resident passed away peacefully with family, after a lengthy illness.
Russ was born in Harvey, Illinois. He always fondly recalled growing up on his family’s farm in Rochelle, Illinois, with his younger sister, Susan, his parents and his grandparents. This experience influenced many of his interests later in his life.
Russ’ father left the family farm in Illinois to move his family west when Russ was in junior high school. They briefly lived in Issaquah, Washington, until the family settled in Campbell, California, during Russ’ freshman year of high school. Russ attended Camden High School, graduating in 1965. He participated in a variety of high school sports, especially enjoying football. He had the opportunity to play football for San Jose State his freshman year of college. ....

It’s been four months since the new Mukilteo ferry terminal opened to the public, but it opened without some of the bells and whistles. Those features will be going in over the next week.
Work started Wednesday to punch through the new road that will provide direct access from Highway 525 to the terminal. Riders have been using a temporary road to drive the extra third of a mile to the loading area. The new road goes through the old terminal area. ....
