Two decades of caring and curing: The humanitarian journey of a Chinese doctor


After a tough mission in conflict-affected South Sudan followed by a three-week quarantine period, it was a moment of pure joy when Dr Yiu Kai Au could finally join his family and friends in Hong Kong for the traditional Dragon Boat Festival recently. Yet, it reminded him of a totally different Dragon Boat Festival ten years ago.
In 2011, Dr Au was on a humanitarian mission at Teme Hospital in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. On the very morning of the Dragon Boat Festival that year, Dr Au had to carry out as many as seven open surgeries!
His diary entry from that day reads: This is a case of a gunshot to the back, where the victim was shot in the right spine. The bullet was in the left abdominal wall, just below the skin. And from the position of the bullet, we guessed that it may have hit some vital organs in the body.We found tears in his inferior vena cava, pancreas, duodenum and stomach. I fixed all the tears one by one. ....

HKU to confer Honorary University Fellowships on four distinguished individuals


The University of Hong Kong will confer Honorary University Fellowships on four distinguished individuals, namely, 
Mr George Joseph HO, Mr LO Sheung Yan, Dr Norman SZE Nung Chi, and Mr Henry WAI Wing Kun, in recognition of their contributions to the University and society. (Please click here for the photos of four Honorary University Fellows)
In light of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, the University initially decided to postpone the Honorary University Fellowships Presentation Ceremony originally scheduled for September of that year to late February 2021. Given the ongoing developments in the COVID-19 situation, the ceremony was not held in February as planned. Accordingly, the four distinguished individuals mentioned above will be honoured at a ceremony to be held at HKU in the Fall Semester of this year to receive the award together with the Honorary University Fellows of 2021, for which nominations are now being invited. ....

$9.7m set for typhoon victims

The Government today approved $9.7 million for four relief agencies to help typhoon victims in the Philippines.
 
Oxfam Hong Kong was allocated $2.614 million, Plan International Hong Kong was granted $1.951 million, Hong Kong Red Cross $1.825 million, and Save the Children Hong Kong $3.31 million.
 
The grants will be used to provide hygiene, household and education kits, water purification items as well as shelter materials for about 57,750 victims.
 
Together with a grant approved earlier for this typhoon in the Philippines, $10.225 million in grants have been approved to benefit 67,750 victims.
 
To ensure the money is properly used, the relief agencies must submit evaluation reports and audited accounts after the relief projects are completed. ....
