In second day of Newman hearing, it 'depends on who you believe'

As another victim of sexual assault took the stand in District Attorney Greg Newman s removal hearing and witnesses testified to his character, the second day of testimony showed clearly the two sides of the argument.
Witnesses called Newman one of the good guys, while an alleged sexual assault survivor emotionally confronted him over his refusal to pursue her case and the way he treated her.
Grace Pryor was a student at Brevard College when she says she was raped by two fellow students almost six years ago to the day.
She said Brevard Police investigated the matter and told her that Newman would be in touch as the prosecutor. ....

The removal hearing of District Attorney Greg Newman is nearing completion with closing arguments starting at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Newman, who has served as the District Attorney for District 29 B since 2013 representing Henderson, Transylvania and Polk counties, faced a second day of testimony from alleged sexual assault survivors. But several witnesses also testified in support of his character. ....

Grace Pryor thinks back with remarkable clarity to that murky, nightmarish night six years ago, when she was stumbling back to her dorm room at Brevard College.
Pryor, now 26 and an aspiring doctor of audiology, knew she’d had too much Bacardi to be driving home in the early morning of April 12, 2015. But she was alert enough to remember the alleged rape by two basketball players she called friends.
In addition to that trauma were the stinging words of District Attorney Greg Newman, whose job Pryor thought was to uphold justice.
“He told me five different ways it was my fault. The one that resonates most is he said it was because I was wearing a crop top and leggings. It was pretty horrifying,” Pryor said. ....

Henderson County DA claims conflict in school sex assault case

Henderson County District Attorney Greg Newman told the Citizen Times his decision to prosecute an alleged sexual assault case at Asheville School might hinge on public efforts to remove him from office.
The affidavit to remove Newman was filed under a relatively obscure law known as General Statute 7A-66. It was initiated Feb. 11 by more than a dozen families in North Carolina prosecutorial district 42, which encompasses Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties.
They filed the petition in Henderson County Superior Court. On March 3, Superior Court Judge Peter Knight referred it to Judge Robert C. Ervin, who has 30 days from that day - or until April 3 - to act on the motion, which could lead to a public hearing or to dismissal of the motion. ....
