Personnel. Were taking steps to make sure we can defend our people and respond decisively if we need to. This is not what we want, not what were looking for. We dont want an escalation. We dont want to see a second or third front develop. We dont want to see our personnel come under fire, but if that happens, were ready for it. Thats Secretary Of State Antony Blinken on the expected provocation from iran connected to the israel hamas war. It comes as Israel Defense forces are expanding significantly. Air strikes in gaza. Well get the live report from israel straight ahead. Plus an update on the hostages still being held by hamas after the Terrorist Group did release two americans on friday. And also coming up, well go through the nine republicans now running to be House Speaker following jim jordans failed bid to lead the lower chamber. Good morning and welcome to Way Too Early on this monday, october 23rd. Im jonathan lemire. Thanks for starting your day and week with us. And well begin this morning with the latest out of the israel hamas war and the air strikes launched into gaza, lebanon, syria, and the west bank all by israels defense forces. Residents of north gaza received new warnings to evacuate to the south of the territory, adding they may be identified as sympathizers with a terrorist organization that decide to stay put. This comes as israel dramatically expanded the scope of its offensive. In the west bank, the idf says its air strike on an underground compound at a mosque struck a, quote, terror cell, while in syria, Airports In Damascus and oh le pa were struck and two people killed. Overnight they believe hesitate bole was designing a plan about to launch rockets and missiles. Israels military gathers at the gaza border. Israel has not given the goahead just yet. Meanwhile a second humanitarian aid convoy has reached the gaza strip bringing much needed supplies to the territory. 14 total trucks kaifred food, water, and medicine arrived yesterday, according to a u. N. About official. The trucks were inspected by israels defense about forces prior to entry, but no fuel was allowed in to gaza. Yesterdays convoy followed the first round of trucks carrying supplies. Those entered gaza on saturday. That shipment was packed onto 20 trucks and was described by the u. N. As a, quote, fraction of what was needed after 13 days of complete siege. Joining us now, hive from tel aviv, israel, is nbc News Senior National correspondent jay gray. Jay, good to see you this morning. Twoparter for you. First, could you see these trucks go in there, but its not a lot of supplies, lets be clear, in these two shipments. And, secondly, give us a better sense just how much israel escalated its Air Strikes Ore the weekend. Reporter well, yeah, and lets start with the escalation along the border with gaza. I can tell you the idf is reporting hitting 320 military targets over the last 24 hours. That includes tunnels, it includes Operational Command centers. They are Clearing Areas surrounding the border. We now know through idf sources that select teams have crossed that border and moved into the area, looking for hostages, they say, clearing out areas around the border, around the fence, with the idea that they are preparing for Ground Operations in the area. And weve talked about that for days, just as youve said, jonathan. Now the idf are talking about it actively, saying they are clearing the way for ground operation. Thats a change at least in language from the leaders who will ultimately give the go for tanks and troops, which, by the way, are reassembling, repositioning along the border, giving them the opportunity to move in. I can tell you one of the idf commanders talking about the intensity of the air strikes, the pace of the air strikes. Im quoted here. They want to leave hamas weakened, tired, and dislocated in preparation for the next stage of military operations. So it would appear that were on the verge of those tanks rolling in to gaza at some point soon. Lets talk about the aid on the other end of this. You had the trucks rolling through yesterday. Youve got trucks lined up today. It appears they may make the crossing into gaza as well. Even with those deliveries, the u. N. Says thats about 4 of the daily average of supplies taken into the area before the war. The white house is now promising continuous deliveries of supplies into the region. It appears that israel has agreed to that. The one thing we wont see and the one thing they desperately need, jonathan, is fuel. A lot of good context for us there provided by Senior Nation Tgsal correspondent nbc news jay gray. Thank you very much. Stay safe. Well talk to you again very soon. Meanwhile Secretary Of State Antony Blinken tells nbc news hes hopeful that more hostages will be released from gaza after two americans abducted by hamas were released late last week. Blinken about was on Meet The Press yesterday and called it gratifying to see the release of Judith Raanan and her daughter natalie on friday after they were taken hostage by hamas during the Terrorist October 7th strike on about israel. But blinken also expressed skepticism over hamas recent statement they were ready to release additional hostages. Actions will speak, not words, particularly coming from hamas. But weve been engaged, as i said, withnerpartners. We dont know why hamas released natalie and judith first. We say first because we hope more will follow. I cant speak to that. What i can speak to is our incessant efforts to try to get people home, get them back with their families and loved ones. Thats continuing as we speak. This is something were engaged in virtually around the clock. Meanwhile President Biden on friday posted this picture on his official twitter x account, saying he spoke to both hostages, telling them the government will fully support them as they recover from the traumatic experience. Judiths exhusband and natalies father spoke to him after the release saying they talked to his daughter and said she sounds very good. The mother and daughter were with martin fletcher. Joining us now, michael weiss. Great to see you this morning. We have come to you so many times about Combat Operations in ukraine. Talk to us about your assessment as to what you see on the ground now in in israel as it prepares to go into gaza. The u. S. Has urged israel to show some restraint. Theres some reporting that the u. S. Has asked them to hold off the Ground Invasion entirely. But theres a limit, of course, how long tel aviv will listen to that. What is your sense of when they might go in, and what might it look like . Thanks, jonathan. I think the issue here is one of three major things. Number one, the United States wants to avoid any kind of escalation, particularly any escalation that would draw the u u. S. Into direct conflict with iran. U. S. Nationality Security Experts including former Intelligence Officers tell me if hezbollah should open up a front against israel, theres almost a certainty the United States would become mired in this conflict, which is probably the worstcase scenario that the Biden Administration is trying to avoid at the moment. The second is, yeah, lets see how many hostages hamas is willing to release probably out of desperation because they see the Writing On The Wall that the Ground Offensive is imminent and its designed to eradicate them. If you listen to basically every top is rah i will official, theres no going back. Theyre not willing to go back to some kind of conversation with this group in gaza. The third, which is intriguing, if you looked a the long checkered career of Benjamin Netanyahu, there are a lot of hardliners in israel who think hes a coward. This is a man whos been a Prime Minister longer than anybody but has never engaged in a fullscale war. Air strikes, question, sorsorti yes, but this this is not the man for the hour, they think. I do agree with your correspondent who said a Ground Invasion probably is imminent simply because Israeli Society will not abide any Prime Minister who doesnt basically try to get rid of hamas at this point, the society is so traumatized by the events of october 7th. Well be following this in the days ahead. We also want to high light some terrific reporting you broke over the weekend about the russian bombing of a nato country long before than what weve seen in the last year or two. Its ukraine. Give us a sense of what we can expect and well make sure everyone takes a look at the story on the inside. Thanks. We did a monthslong investigation into a Russian Military Intelligence Unit known as 29155. Your viewers may be familiar with them because these guys are responsible for trying to murder two people in 2008 with novichok, and theyre also responsible for blowing up a lot of stuff in bulgaria and elsewhere. Mainly these are weapons and ammunitions depots. What we did, my partners and i, we looked into a case that had not gotten any attention in 2011. This is long before the war in ukraine. This was during the obama reset with russia. Basically these guys had a sort of contest among themselves to invent remote detonators, and the reason for this, they were looking to blow up a consignment of ammunition purchased by bulgaria to be sent to georgia, which was then still recovering from its 2008 summer war with russia, and they planted the bombs in a consignment of Artillery Shells in the czech republic, and this consignment, big plastic explosives, traveled through about four different capitals in europe, Ma I Superior Population centers, before it reached its major destination and then they blew it skyhigh. It goes to show russia has been Planning Acts of terrorism and acts of war since before 2011 long before we knew we were in a cold war or standoff with vladimir putin. Very revealing story. We urge everyone to check it out. Its on the insider. Michael weiss, editor for the insider. Well talk to you again soon. Still ahead on Way Too Early ill talk about the other headlines making news this morning including bidens slug itch poll numbers. Were el go through a 25 million plan. The Biden Campaign is looking to buy more Early Campaign ads as concerns persist over low polling numbers. According to the Washington Post team biden is considering options for expanding an unconventional early advertising push this year as the president continues to express frustrations in private conversations about his poll numbers around the states. In august the Biden Campaign poured 25 million into a digital campaign. That early fall ad blitz was launch ahead of the first primary gop debate. Theyre also concerned it does not reflect the economic reality of voters and it might be a waste of money right now, arguing americans simply arent paying attention to the 2024 race just yet, but the paper adds its not to address the president s Polling Problem with the campaign believing the ads lay the groundwork to help his Approval Ratings next year. Thanks for being with us on this monday morning. We turn now to the nations capitol where the houses Battle For A New Speaker is dragging into a third week and has taken yet another twist and turn. This morning there are nine, nine candidates vying for the position. All of them declared their bids after congressman jim jordan of ohio dropped his bid late last week following three failed house floor votes. It wasnt really his choice. The Republican Congress voted Behind Closed Doors to dump him. Jordan out. Heres what happens next. A gop Candidate Forum is scheduled for this evening and an internal conference for tomorrow morning. Following that, temporary speaker Patrick Mchenry says theyll vote hopefully by noon tomorrow. Its left many republicans frustrating including Michael Mccaul who calls the dysfunctional drama embarrassing. My issues of war and peace, its to dangerous right now. The world is on fire. This is so dangerous what were doing. Most importantly its embarrassing because it empowers and emboldens our adversary like president xi who says democracy doesnt work. Hes not wrong. Embarrassing, chaotic, pick your word. Were now three weeks without a speaker. Talk to us about some of these candidates who have put their names forth. Is there a favorite in the mix . Yeah. So nine candidates have submitted their names to run for speaker. If you have probably the frontrunner is tom emmer, the republican whip from minnesota. He has the leadership of former speaker Kevin Mccarthy, hes the former house chair for republicans. A lot of people credit him for the fact the republicans took house in the last election, and so he has inroads both with the conservatives and the more mainstream candidates of the party, but he does have one big problem, and that is that donald trump doesnt seem to support him and Donald Trumps allies are against him. Already steve bannon, who is a close ally of donald trump, has been campaigning against tom emmer on the radio. And, remember, you only need four House Republicans to object to your candidacy and you cant become speaker, the margins are so close. It looks like a very tough task for tom emmer to get the votes, but i would say right now hes probably the frontrunner. All right. Lets walk through the next couple of days. As you rightly point out, its a tough task for anyone. Emmer has some opposition. Even if he falls short, someone else else steps up. Do we really think this is going to happen . Tomorrow night will we have a speaker, or is this going to spill on for days or even weeks . Im very pessimistic. Weve seen after throwing out Kevin Mccarthy who had 97 of the congress. Steve scalise who couldnt get it done. Jim jordan, a favorite of the hard right, judicial chairman, couldnt get it done. There are a couple of other candidates in this race, but im very pessimistic about the effect the chances for House Republicans to come to 217, which is the amount of votes they need. Thats extraordinary considering not just the lack of speaker prevents the u. S. From fully helping israel or ukraine, but also the governments poised to shut down again in a couple of weeks. Real quick, last one, if youre right and they dont get a speaker in the next couple of days, do you think well see more momentum with a style f o speaker with the democrats helping out . I think with each passing day, it becomes more likely you could put in a temporary speaker, Patrick Mchenry. But, again, the conservative wing of the party is very much against that idea. But as the pressure continues and we get nearer to a shutdown, that does seem more and more likely. All right. Really good stuff this morning from Congressional Correspondent of the New York Times luke broadwater. Still ahead on Way Too Early, well check out the latest Business Headlines with our friends from cnbc, including a look at the markets as Big Tech Companies prepare to release their latest earnings reporting this week and how amazon is putting on a Pressure Campaign for employees to make a return to the office. Now, amazon is not alone in trying to get workers back to the office. Tech giants across the board have been struggling to determine what policies they can put in place to bring workers back after working remotely during covid. Amazon has been facing a big backlash from employees over their guidelines to get back into the office three days a week. 30,000 amazon workers have signed a petition against this new policy of getting workers back into the office three days a week, but amazon is continuing to push ahead and is now putting into place guidelines for how these employees can be dismissed if they dont want to abide by the rules. Former President Donald Trump has been fined 5,000 for violating a gag order in his new york civil fraud trial. Ter it was discovered that a post attacking his main law clerk that was taken down from trumps truth social page a few week is ago but remained on his Campaign Website until just last week. In his order the jge trusted his excuse saying, quote, giving the defendant the benefit of the doubt, he still violated the gag order. Make no mistake, future violations, whether intentional or unintentional, will subject the violator to far more severe sanctions. While the fine might seem nominal to trump, its the first time hes been punished for violating a gag order in any of his cases. Elsewhere, big news. Trumps Campaign Provider is the third defendant in the Fulton County Election Interference case to plead guilty. Chesebro entered the plea on friday as Jury Selection for his trial got underway. He was charged with one felony count of conspiracy to commit filing false documents. Chesebro faces five years probation and 5,000 fine along with other requirements and must continue to provide documents to the state. Thats important. He was set to stand trial alone after codefendant Sidney Powell took a deal last week. As part of powells deal, she was required to testify against the defendants. Chesebro was involved in a plan to attempt to overturn joe bidens win in the 2020 election. Chess breauxs lawyer insisted over the weekend his client did not implicate the former president. I want to make something clear. He did not implicate anyone else. He implicated himself in that particular charge. Someone asked earlier if you were donald trump, would you be worried . I could personally honestly answer no. Its not at that mr. Chesebro is trying to protect mr. Trump or anyone else. I personally believe the state will not call him to testify on their behalf. Joining us now, former u. S. Attorney for the Northern District of alabama, now an msnbc legal analyst, our friend, joyce vance. Good to see you. Lets talk about this. You heard chesebros lawyer said, well, trump should. Be worried about that. Should you be worried . You should also be worried if youre a defendant in a criminal case and your codefendant pleads guilty. In a situation like this, fani willis certainly sees value in chesebros plea regardless of what his lawyer will stay in public. Sometimes a smart lawyer will hedge their bets like this to protect their client. The reality is chesebro didnt have much if any in the way of direct contact with donald trump, and the people who will really feel the pressure from his plea will be the other layer lawyers. If they then decide to plead guilty and cooperate, donald trump will have something to be concerned about. Talk about what happens here. This is the third guilty plea. Obviously you mentioned the lawyers. Should we expect a Domino Effect there in Fulton County . I think we will. Thats the typical trajectory in a case like this because when defendants are looking a trial date in the eye, they realize that they either run the risk of spending years in prison in georgia or they decide to cut a deal with the government. The wild card here is that the judge hasnt set a trial date for the remaining defendants. I think well see that come to a head in the next few days. So how about the gag order we mentioned in the new york case, the violation, you know, that trump was slapped with a relatively light fine for him, but it sets a precedent. Do you think that the judge is willing to do this, that you crossed the line and violated the gag order, does that seem to you a hint he would be willing to do so again and potentially administer much stiffer penalties, which could include potentially even a night or two in jail . Theres no doubt that the judge is serious about his gag order. In fact, he says in the order that even an inadvertent violation of the gag order still counts, and thats why he imposes this fine here. You know, jonathan, usually in a gag order situation, judges engage in what is apparent, i think of, as progressive discipline. Theyll start out with this sort of modest reminder but a subsequent violation would be a serious matter. I wouldnt be surprised to see a Contempt Of Court finding for an intentional violation. Ultimately, that could lead to jail time. The real point here is that this is an opportunity for a defendant in any case to get it right. Lastly, joyce, real quick, on any of the many legal fronts facing the former president , is there anything we should be watching out for in the days ahead thats particularly on your radar . Well, look, were really hitting go time for all of these trials. Shortly after the beginning of the year, theres a series of cascading criminal trials that the former president faces. The pressure on him, just the mere scheduling deadlines, become very difficult. So what im looking for next is, as weve already discussed, the setting of a trial date in Fulton County. Because if judge mcafee puts the case at the front of the line, which now he has a fourmonth gap on his calendar, that ratchets up the pressure even more. None of this is good for donald trump. Weve talked a lot about how he has seemed to be where Legal Proceedings are concerned. Were entering the phase where we see what happens when the legal system is fully geared up and ready to bring all of the responsibility and accountability that people who violate the law should be accountable for, to bear on donald trump. As legal system gears up, trump is trying to gear up a president ial campaign. That wont be easy. Former u. S. Though israel continues to bombard gaza from the air, an anticipated Ground Invasion hasnt started. That may be due, in part, to white house officials working to prevent further loss of innocent lives. According to one u. S. Official who spoke to the Washington Post, a core objective of President Bidens trip to telaviv last week was to buy time for israel to, quote, think through a possible ground assault. In meetings with israel Prime Minister netanyahu, biden reportedly expressed concerns about the logistics of a Ground Invasion and the possible impact of war spreading across the middle east. And in a series of Marathon Meetings of their own, Secretary Of State Antony Blinken and defense secretary lloyd austin also reportedly worked with their israel counterparts last week on efforts to try to minimize civilian casualties. Joining us now, White House Correspondent for the New York Times, michael sheer. Youve also got new reporting on the conversations taking place behind the scenes between the white house and israel officials. Talk to us about these pushes from the Biden Administration, recognizing that, of course, israel has the right and is going to strike back, but, yet, theyre trying to minimize casualies and the war from expanding. Michael, do we have you there . Yup, now youve got me. Sorry. I lost you for a minute. So, yeah, the way you described it is exactly right. These are careful conversations. Theyre not happening. You know, the white house is very careful not to dictate what israel should do or what they insist that israel must do. Partly, thats because israel hates that kind of thing, but also because the administration is very concerned about playing into the narrative that iran and others in the region like to spread, that the United States is somehow always pulling the strings when it comes to israel. But with that caveat, they have been giving a lot of advice. They have been trying to urge the israelis to think through, not rush into the Ground Invasion. Theyre worried about the hostages. Theyre worried about the impact a Ground Invasion may have on the aid thats coming into the palestinians, and theyre worried, frankly, that once the Ground Invasion begins, when it does, iran, the proxies that iran has around the region, may very well attack the u. S. Interests in the region, forces that are stationed there, et cetera, and that that is almost certain to drag the United States more deeply into a much more broader, more dangerous regional conflict. For all those reasons, they would like the israelis to go slow. Its not clear, frankly, from my conversations with the administration, that those that that advice is being listened to. The delays weve seen in the launching of a true Ground Invasion into gaza may have more to do with, frankly, the preparations on the ground that the Israeli Military is going through. The Administration Officials i talk to say it is not entirely clear the israelis really, you know, have concluded, have agreed with the United States to slow down. It is an extraordinary buildup of forces there. Youve also got some new reporting, michael, about a rift taking place inside the Israeli Government regarding a broader military operation. Give us a sense of that. Well, look, its just an indication of what a difference a couple of weeks make. Before the attacks on october 7th, israel was really gripped by a political crisis of their own making, disputes between Benjamin Netanyahu and others in the government. So much so, he announced that he was going to fire his Defense Minister. That really accelerated some of the disputes within israel. The attacks happened. Now, the priority is uniting the country. The Prime Minister announced the Defense Minister wont be leaving any time soon. You can see, right now, the government is run by a coalition of parties that, in normal times, dont agree, and thatll lead to disagreements likely as things move forward. We just saw there the headline, that Israeli Defense officials saying troops will soon see gaza from inside. We wait for that. White house correspondent for the New York Times, michael shear, come back soon. Thank you for joining us this morning. Thanks to all of you for getting up Way Too Early with us on this monday morning. It is going to be a busy week. Morning joe starts right now. We expect that theres a likelihood of escalation, escalation by iranian proxies directed against our forces, directed against our personnel. We are taking steps to make sure we can effectively defend our people and respond
