tomorrow morning, much cooler. seasonably mild though. 30 to 36 degrees. tomorrow afternoon we'll see the temperatures down to close to average but still above average. 47 to 53 so not nearly as warm but still not a bad winter afternoon and there is the next four days talking about that chance of rain on saturday and on sunday but if it's cold enough, maybe some snowflakes. this is still, we've been saying it all week, a very tough forecast. you want to make sure you stay tuned for that one. >> all right. we'll do it. thank you, doug. it's a question that's gaining some steam tonight. is sugar dangerous? >> some california researchers think that the added sugars in processed foods should be more closely regulated and nbc's chief medical editor dr. nancy snyderman is here with more on the study that was part of a commentary in the journal "nature." are they saying sugar is dangerous? what do they have against it? >> they're going further than that and saying sugar is toxic and should be up there with tobacco and cigarettes. the reason it's not is because we just haven't been able to disassociate ourselves from the food we eat. we now eat three times as much sugar as we did a generation ago. and that accounts for 75 pounds of sugar for every man, woman, and child in the united states. and these researchers are linking sugar not just to obesity but sugar to problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, dementia, you name it they think it should be out of our foods. except for natural sugar that you might find in a little bit of natural juice or in the fruits we eat. >> so what does this mean, nancy? might we likely see more regulations? >> i think what we're looking at is a big battle. these researchers would like some regulations. they would like everything from attacks, the amount of sweetness, a tax, much like the tobacco tax that has proved to be very effective in cutting cigarette smoking in this country. others think there should be a label on the packaging so you can see how much sugar is in there and that a certain level is toxic so we go to the grocery store and will shop differently. but as you can expect, the american beverage association and the american sugar association have pushed back really hard in saying there is no truth to this. that americans should be able to buy what they want and that this is basically just the food police intruding. i don't think this one is going away. for one simple reason. some of the tobacco companies own the food companies. think of kraft. once you have that i think sugar is going to be now in the battleground right along with tobacco. i have to say there is some pretty elegant science behind it. this isn't sham science. this is the real deal. >> what about the american public? would even hearing about the concerns of these scientists, would the debate do anything to modify behavior at all? or are we just addicted to it? >> i think that is the million dollar question. because what we know is we haven't changed the obesity issue in this country very much so you can talk about the behavior modification but it's really hard especially if your brain gets deprogrammed. there is pretty good research to show that even if you say oh, well i just eat diet drinks or i just use extra stuff in my coffee, that that diet stuff is sweeter than natural sugar. it repro grams your brain to say you know what? the real stuff doesn't taste so good anymore. i want more. and then this urge that you really can't control you literally go out searching for more sugar. it's very primordal and the kind of urge that is hard to say no to. deprogramming your brain is hard. >> thanks so much. it is going to be interesting. it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. dr. snyderman will have a full report on the possible dangers of sugar coming up at 7:00 on nightly news with brian williams. that is fascinating. it's going to be interesting to see. >> sure is. >> we had a big problem with tobacco years ago. >> sure did. >> it was just getting the public educated. >> interesting. a controversy at the university of connecticut. >> please deposit 50 cents. >> the fallout over a video that critics say promotes a culture of rape. >> a d.c. speed camera inspires a local chef to put out a sign warning drivers just how many people are getting snapped by that camera on "access hollywood" test. sunshine. temperatures into the 50s a little earlier. even some areas around the 60-degree mark. another nice, mild day. this is how our day is ending out there right now. take a look at this shot. a beautiful shot of the sunset. the sun went down about 17 minutes ago. you can still see we are in dusk right now. what a great shot that is. we look out toward the washington monument this evening. current temperature out at the airport 51 degrees with our winds gusting to 29 miles an hour right now. those winds are going to continue to gust through the early evening. they should start to die down and will by tomorrow morning. storm 4 radar, nothing to show you in our area right now. the rain is out of here. i want to take you out west to denver, colorado where they have already started to cancel a lot of flights out of denver and the snow hasn't even started at denver. it's down around colorado springs, around the castle rock area just south of denver. denver expecting one to two feet of snow and up to 40 to maybe 50-mile-per-hour winds on the plains. they're talking about blizzard conditions. this could be the biggest snow for them of the season. they've seen quite a bit of it. some of the energy may try to make its way our way over the weekend. today though? satellite and radar showing the shower activity we saw earlier today. that is all moving out and we're starting to see clearing skies. those clear skies and that cooler air moving on in here will allow the temperatures to go down tonight to about 32 in gaithersburg. 30 in frederick. 28 in martinsburg. 29 in hagerstown. manassas around 31 degrees. tomorrow morning it is going to start off a lot colder than it has been over the past couple days. with plenty of sunshine tomorrow we will still be quite warm. temperatures around 52 in washington. 51 in gaithersburg. quite warm. that's relative. of course we were at 72 yesterday. near 60 today. tomorrow a lot cooler but that's still close to 7 to 8 degrees above average for this time of year and with that sunshine tomorrow afternoon not bad at all. take a look at this picture. this is lucas oil stadium where of course we have the super bowl coming up. dan hellie took this picture a little earlier and of course the giants take on the new england patriots. your forecast for the day? if you're thinking about going out and tailgating before the game how about 42 degrees down to about 32? just in time for kickoff. and the super bowl means it's time for our super fandemonium sweepstakes. maybe you've seen the promotions. we want to do lunch with you and not just us. talking about vance and hellie and doreen and i all going out to lunch with somebody out there. all you have to do is go to nbc washington.com. go to our facebook page. you like us on facebook and maybe we can do lunch. it's all on vance and hellie. don't pick someplace like wendy's. >> no drive thes. >> pick something good. >> we'll go for that. thank you. he mentioned a picture from hellie. they showed us the zip line before. vance and hellie live from indy. we want to see you on the zip line. that is the shot. >> that's worth going all the way out there in the cold. >> can you read my lips? no way! is that clear? >> yeah. >> come on. >> i actually put that out there on twitter. i asked people what they would think if we got vance out there. one guy said, listen. he's a lot more important and a lot cooler than you. so why don't you do it? you know what? -- >> that wasn't me. i didn't do that. >> all right. so here's the deal today. the tight end for the patriots had limited participation in practice today. there is no way he does not play in the super bowl. the giants trying to tweak tom brady a little bit saying the last time they played he was thinking there was a phantom pass rush but nobody was even there. so he was almost playing scared. off the field we took a visit to a radio row. you've been there and seen some of the tom foolery and shenanigans. >> always an adventure. >> it's fun. we put together a little sample for you starting with our good friend mike weis. >> welcome to radio row. let's go. welcome to the like weis show everybody. >> mike weis is one of the personalities who truly enjoys radio row. >> for me it's kind of like old home week in a weird way. you know, i've known some of these people forever. and, plus, now i'm part of this weird culture of people that actually talk about nothing for a living. here on the row everybody talking about something. >> here on behalf of marriott. >> we want to get the message out. >> out now in book stores on amazon.com. >> make sure they check out and see if you have an abdominal aneurysm. >> go to jersey.com to find out more. >> we talked redskins with former bills coach mav levy who was an assistant for george allen. >> an assistant coach. great guy to work for. very demanding. what a wonderful coach. the book i wrote was inspired by a little bit by george allen who was always paranoid that someone was filming our practices or had our locker room wired or was -- had a way they listened to what's going on in the meeting room. george helped on that one too. i really revere the time i had working with him. >> and former broncos madman bill romanowski who played for mike shanahan. >> you got to have players. he won in denver because he had great football players. and there's going to be a cycle and it's happening in washington right now where the cycle is they don't have, you know, the great players that you need to win on a consistent basis. and i think ultimately you got to have a great quarterback. >> speaking of great redskins quarterbacks, joe thiseman has been a super bowl staple. >> i made up my mind i wasn't going to go to one unless i played in one. then i had a chance to play in two and broadcast actually super bowl 19. i broadcast the miami dolphins san francisco super bowl with don meredith and frank gifford. it was my first chance to do television. so it was my audition i guess you could say into the world of television. >> your first chance to do television, the super bowl, mine alexandria, minnesota. that's the difference between january hellie and joe thiseman right there. holy smokes. yeah. i think there was a lot more differences too. it's fun seeing all the guys there later in the day after we left, tim tebow was there and drew brees and some of the big quarterbacks, cam newton there as well. >> it's like going into a -- all the guys leave their attitudes at the door. >> true. >> just a bunch of guys trying to have a good time. herman edwards, scott walker, charlie brown, a bunch ever other guys just all came over and formed a circle and it was delightful to witness all of that because i wouldn't do that of course. i'm professional. >> you see those conversations, too. james lofton and joe thiseman talking to each other about playing in the pro bowl. you're standing right there. a cool moment. >> anyway, we got that and we got some of the best, most decadent donuts you can ever eat in your life all of that and more coming up in a few minutes. thanks. >> can't wait for that. >> see you guys at 6:00. >> yeah. next on news 4 at 5:00 the controversy over a video at the university of connecticut. some say it promotes a culture of rape. a video that aired on the university of connecticut's student-run television station has prompted an outcry from students tonight. many are saying it promotes a culture of rape. >> ah! >> reporter: it looks and sounds just like a horror movie. a blonde woman being chased by an apparent rapist and can't get help from u-conn's emergency call system. >> oh, my god. someone is chasing me. i need help right away. >> please deposit 50 cents. >> repter: the video was produced by the university of connecticut's student-run tv station. it's caused so much controversy on campus it's been removed from uctv's website but can still be seen on youtube. >> it's not edgy. it's not just like in bad taste. it's just wrong. >> reporter: this woman says she saw the video on her dorm tv monday night. the senior was so upset by the content she and her friends started a facebook page in protest and held a meeting with close to a hundred students against the video. >> rape is joked about by a lot of men. but this just took it to a whole new level. >> always crying about being raped. soak it up. >> reporter: part of the video was shot on this quiet trail on the north end of campus. students tell me there is a reason the video creators chose this spot. >> it's called the run path but a lot of people refer to it as the rape trail. >> uctv did release a statement that says we apologize for any frustration or harm the respective video clip has caused and all of us here at uctv have learned from this event. this group of students wants more than an apology. they want the station to change its policy. >> it's a student-funded organization and personally doint want my funding going toward something like that. >> and that does it for news 4 at 5:00. stay right there. news 4 at 6:00 starts right now. is there anybody bleeding? >> is she bleeding? yes she's face down. she's bleeding a bit but she says she's okay. but she's a little banged up. it's the driver that i'm worried about. because she's pinned underneath the steering wheel here. >> those are the calls for help moments after a metro bus swerves off the road and tonight you'll hear the 911 calls and the dramatic video from inside that captured everything. a young student was sexually assaulted on campus and tonight we've learned the victim was assigned to escort the suspect around the elementary school. and it's the kind of suspense you'd expect on donald trump's reality show but this played out in the republican presidential race. good evening everyone. i'm
