President trumps latest war of words is particularly striking because this time its with the republican chairman of the Senate Foreign relations committee, bob corker. Senator corker, making an extraordinary charge overnight. That the president s actions are endangering the country. And his threats to other nations could lead to another world war. This morning, a major republican rebuke. Top gop senator bob corker telling the New York Times, President Trump could put the nation on the path to world war iii, and that the president s tweets from undermined american diploma diplomacy. He concerns me. He told the times, he would concern anyone that cares about our nation. He is alarmed by President Trump. He treats his office like a reality show. Like hes doing the apprentice or something. The harsh words came after corker made this comment. I think secretary tillerson, secretary mattis and chief of staff kelly are those people that help separate our country from chaos. Reporter over the weekend, the president went into attack mode, slamming corkers decision not to run for reelection. Corker begged him for his endorseme endorsement. And said, he didnt have the guts to run. Corker contradicted that account to the times. The president asked him to reconsider. Its a shame the white house has become an adult daycare center. Someone obviously missed their shift this morning. The faceoff is notable because corker, a tennessee republican, was a staunch trump supporter. But after the president s controversial response to the violence in charlottesville, a rift opened up. The president has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability, nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to be successful. Reporter corkers concerns come amid the ongoing north Korean Nuclear crisis, after kim jongun touted his arsenal over the weekend. The president delivering a vague warning, tweeting, only one thing would work. Later, asked for an explanation by nbcs peter alexander. Whats the one thing that will work with north korea . Youll figure that out pretty soon. Reporter the president waging a new battle over immigration this morning, with the white house demanding a Border Security crackdown in exchange for protecting young, undocumented immigrants, known as d. R. E. A. M. Eers from deportation. The most controversial request, funding for a border wall. A key campaign promise. We will build a wall, believe me. Reporter also on proposals, cracking down on sanctuary cities. Tougher action on unaccompanied minors. Democratic leaders said the white house cant be serious about compromise, given the hard line policies theyre asking for. Lets go back to the war of words between bob corker and the president. Corker has announced hes not running for reelection. But hes a sitting u. S. Senator. So, his vote is important on key issues. Reporter the president needs his vote to get tax reform and immigration reform. Mr. Trump is expected to announce a new iran policy. Corker may be essential to carrying that out, as well. Hes not an antitrumper. He was supportive during the campaign. His name floated as a potential v. P. Nomine, secretary of state. This back and forth could send a powerful message that the trump faithful are starting to lose their faith. Part of the rift that opened up with senator corker had to do with secretary of state rex tillerson, who corker supports. Obviously, theres been tension between the president and tillerson. Where are we on that this morning . We saw that on display again over the weekend, when President Trump tweeted. He seemed to undercut his secretary of state. And then, he was asked about the tweet in which he said that north korea had made fools out of u. S. Diplomats. And he said, what is the situation between you and your secretary of state . And the president responded and acknowledged that, look, there are sometimes disagreements and that sometimes he wishes his secretary of state would be a little bit tougher. The white house involved in a new controversy, over the player protests at nfl games. Nate is pushing farther inland after slamming the gulf coast at a hurricane over the weekend. It made landfall twice, in louisiana and mississippi, causing damaging flooding, knocking out power to tens of thousands of people. Dylan is in for al this morning. Shes been tracking this for us. It was a category 1 hurricane when it made landfall. The more significant landfall was near biloxi, mississippi, with the storm and winds up to 85 miles per hour. The benefit of the storm was it was moving quickly. We did see some areas of flooding, the downpours, the tropical nature of the downpours, we cant see Long Duration flooding. Even parts of North Carolina picked up 11 inches of rain on the eastern side of the storm. Now, the storm is posttropical. Its getting up into new york, where were seeing the heaviest rain. Also a band through maryland. That will move through the i95 core dridor to this afternoon. This is going to go into the northeast. And most of the rainfall with this storm will continue to race away. Highest amounts for the next 12 hours or so, will be upstate new york, with three to four inches of rain possible. Philadelphia police are investigating after a car hit an 85yearold woman who was walking in fox chase early this morning. You can see the damage to the cars windshield. The driver stopped near the scene. The victim is in the hospital in critical condition. This morning philadelphia firefighter is in the hospital following this fire at a row home on cedar street in port richmond. No one was hurt. Now, a highprofile crusade is taking place in tennessee, on behalf of the number of babies born dependent on opioids. Heres ronan farrow. Reporter the footage may be tough to watch. Baby jaden is experiencing withdraw. Born dependent on meth and other drugs. Most of the babies that require morphine, we can wean them off in about two weeks. 2 1 2 weeks. His symptoms were so significant and he wasnt able to tolerate us weaning the morphine down. Reporter he is 1 of 351 babies born in east tennessee. Today, hes finally going home, having spent his whole life in intensive care. Experts say nationally, the number of babies born dependent has quadrupled over the past 15 years. Here in appalachia, east tennessee, its ground zero of those kids. Its been dramatic. Tragic. Overwhelming. Reporter barry is one of eight district attorneys in tennessee representing 24 different counties who filed suit against the manufacturers, on behalf of an unnamed child, representing the thousands of babies born dependent in tennessee. When you see the babies screen. You see them claw. You see them shake. It makes the problem real. Its not an abstract policy problem, not a lawsuit. A baby that didnt have a chance. Reporter dozens of cities, counties and states have brought similar suits against the companies. Saying they have pushed doctors to overprescribe painkillers, downplayed risks and fueling an epidemic. The pharmaceutical companies had a choice of how to market these drugs. They saw the consequences. And they kept doing it and kept profiting off of it. Reporter two of libby harris granddaughters suffered opioid addiction. Its hard to explain that this is a precious baby coming into this world and shes going to have so much to overcome, just being born. Reporter she worries about the potential longterm effects for her granddaughter and so many others like her here in tennessee. How much has this epidemic affected lots of families here . Almost every family. Reporter almost every family. Almost every family in this community can speak to the drug issue, either with a Family Member or someone they know being affected. Its not exaggerating to say, theres going to be a generation of orphans. Reporter if you can deliver a message to any of the big pharmaceutical companies, what would you say . I want my family back. And ill never get it the way it was. Reporter in a statement to nbc news, he said it does not promote opioid products. It intends to file a motion to dismiss the tennessee case. Teva says they comply closely with all federal regulations. Endo said they dont comment an ongoing litigation. But did note that safety is a priority for them. And theyre balancing the needs of chronic pain. Purdue said they contribute safety guidelines and work with law enforcement. They deny the allegations. Purdue, which makes oxycontin, pled guilty in 2007, to criminal misbranding. Misleading doctors about the drugs addiction. Three executives were found guilty. Theyve already admitted fault, at least in part. What more do you need . I want them to be held accountable in my county, where i live, where this damage is done. Reporter he and a growing number of officials taking pharmaceutical companies to court across the country, hoping the suits will be a new weapon, on what they have called the worst drug crisis in American History.
