Protesters block NH-144 near Kachurthol on Wednesday
SILCHAR: The prolonged border dispute between Assam and Mizoram triggered another flareup on Tuesday night in which at least six people were injured and several houses were torched in clashes between residents of the two states at Kachurthol in Hailakandi district.
Section 144 CrPC has been promulgated in the Jhalnacherra area under Ramnathpur police station bordering Mizoram. Senior officials of the civil and police administration are camping at Kachurthol to defuse tension.
Tuesday night’s incident took place less than a week after a school at Kachurthol was damaged in two bomb blasts by suspected miscreants from neighbouring Mizoram on February 3.

GUWAHATI: The Apex Court on February 10 rejected the bail plea by the peasants rights activist Akhil Gogoi.

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union-backed Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Akhil Gogoi-led Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti’s political wing Raijor Dal finalised their poll alliance for the upcoming Assam elections.
After a meeting with jailed KMSS leader and Raijor Dal president, Akhil Gogoi, who is currently undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi said, AJP and Raijor Dal will contest the upcoming assembly elections as a united regional front. The poll deal has been finalized. The meeting with Akhil Gogoi lasted for about one-and-a-half hours and AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan was also present in the meeting.

GUWAHATI: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) has filed a petition before the Supreme Court, challenging the Gauhati High Court order which rejected the bail plea of the peasants’ body chief Akhil Gogoi.
“After a prolonged hearing, the honourable Gauhati High Court rejected the bail plea of Gogoi. Thereafter, we had decided to move the Supreme Court challenging the order and accordingly we filed a petition on January 27,” advocate Shantanu Borthakur said.
However, no date has been fixed for hearing by the court as of now.
The high court, while rejecting the bail plea, observed that Gogoi had sent 15 members of his organization to camps to get them trained like Maoists. The court also said there were monetary transactions between Gogoi and the CPI (Maoist).
