1 found dead in burning Wylam house Updated Jan 20, 2021; Facebook Share An investigation is underway after a deadly fire in Birmingham’s Wylam community. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service and Birmingham police responded shortly after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a blaze at a house at 1249 Knoxville Street. BFRS Battalion Chief Jackie Hix said they arrived to find fire coming out of the right side of the house. The fire was quickly extinguished, and it was during a secondary search that the body was discovered. Investigators were not able to determine whether the victim was male or female. No one was reported to currently be living in the house.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the man Thursday as Eusi Malik Kater Jr., 21. The Birmingham Police Department’s south precinct was called to a neighbourhood around 2 p.m. Wednesday due to reports of shots fired, Sgt. Rod Mauldin said, according to AL.com. When officers arrived they encountered a suspect, later identified as Kater, who ran away and fired several shots, Mauldin said. Kater was accused of climbing onto a porch and firing at officers again.

Eusi Malik Kater, Jr., 21, of Birmingham, was shot after police said he took a “tactical position” and fired at officers. The incident began in the 600 block of Center Place Southwest, in the Titusville area. In a press conference, police said officers were responding to a call of shots fired near 5th Avenue Southwest, just after 2 p.m. When the officers arrived, they encountered a suspect who then fled on foot, according to police. Investigators said the suspect shot several shots at officers and continued running until he got to a porch on Center Place Southwest, where police said he “took a tactical position” and continued to fire at officers. Police shot back, striking the suspect.

The Jefferson County Coroner s Office has identified the man as Eusi Malik Kater Jr. of Birmingham. Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said just after 2 p.m. officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 100 block of 5th Avenue Southwest. When police attempted to make contact with Kater, police say he fled to a residence in the 600 block of Center Place South.
