View Comments DOVER — Growing up in a family of 12 children in the segregated South, Mayor Carolyn Blackman said, she took inspiration from the teachings of many leaders, including civil rights icon John Lewis. "I'm a country girl from Virginia," Blackman said Tuesday as she unveiled a road plaque dedicating the new bridge at the corner of East Blackwell and Salem streets in memory of Lewis, the late U.S. congressman. "I dealt a lot with what John Lewis went through." Flanked by Morris County commissioners, legislators and other dignitaries, Blackman recalled a time and place that inspired Lewis, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and others to launch the civil rights movement, taking actions Lewis used to refer to as "good trouble."
