Far-right-sheriffs group gains traction with extremist views

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, a national group of sheriffs that claims the top law enforcers in American counties are not bound by federal law, has successfully spread its doctrine to dozens of states and has mainstreamed its status in part by securing state accreditation for its taxpayer-funded law enforcement training. The group has railed against gun-control laws, COVID-19 mask mandates and public health restrictions, as well as alleged election fraud.
