The winners were chosen from among 173 submitted books, according to Andrew Proctor, executive director of Literary Arts, a Portland nonprofit. The broadcast, hosted by previous Oregon Book Award winners Omar El Akkad and Elena Passarello, began with a tribute to longtime Oregon author Barry Lopez. A National Book Award finalist and Oregon Book Award winner, he hosted the awards ceremony in 2006 and was a recipient of Literary Arts’ C.E.S. Wood Distinguished Writer Award. Lopez died in December.
