From peaceful demonstrations to violent rallies ... from chakka jams to celebrity attention ... the farmers agitation against the three new agriculture laws has been a saga of many twists and turns that has captured both national as well as international attention. The movement, which began with sporadic protests in Punjab following the enactment of the laws in September last year, took a mainstream turn when the farmers gave the "Dilli Chalo" call on November 26 to knock on the doors of the government. But that was just the beginning. Eleven rounds of talks, intervention by the Supreme Court, multiple rallies (peaceful or otherwise) and tireless assurances from the government have failed to break the deadlock between the two sides since the farmers marched to the doorsteps of Delhi. Two-and-a-half-months on, the farmers still want a complete repeal of the laws while the government continues to stand in stout defence of its agri reforms.
