Heading down Tottenham Court Road and into Charing Cross Road, past a run of nondescript Victorian buildings and drab 1970s / 1980s interlopers, the pay-off starts as soon as I spot the spire of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Passing the Edith Cavell statue, my stroll turns into a canter, for on my right is the National Portrait Gallery where I’ll spend the morning.
