Letters to the editor for April 12, 2021 The Gainesville Sun Be prepared Medical emergencies can occur without warning and patients often lose the ability to state their health care choices. As an emergency medicine physician, I observe family conflict and unnecessary suffering and distress created when patients arrive at the hospital without advance directives. Loved ones are left to wonder about the patient’s choices. Be prepared. I urge all adults to have frank discussions with loved ones and document your choices in writing. Designate someone you trust to speak for you in a medical crisis and ensure that person knows your preferences if the situation is dire.
