Halton Haven secures new Â£1k grant
A Halton hospice has secured £1,000 from the Cadent Foundation after being nominated by the gas network’s employees and chosen by their customers.
Halton Haven Hospice provides skilled nursing and palliative care for people whose illness is treatable but cannot be cured, aiming to secure the best quality of life for patients and their families.
Through its ‘connecting colleagues, customers and communities’ initiative, Cadent employees in Cheshire were asked to trial a new approach to the way local grants are allocated.
They nominated local charities which were then shortlisted and then put forward to a public vote with around 1,000 customers having their say. ....

Ellesmere Port youth centre wins top grant of £3,000 | Chester and District Standard

THE Oasis Centre for Young People in Ellesmere Port has been awarded a £3,000 grant from the Cadent Foundation, after being voted for by Cadent customers across the region.
Through its ‘Connecting Colleagues, Customers and Communities’ initiative, Cadent employees in Cheshire were asked to trial a new approach to the way in which local grants are allocated – by nominating local charities which were then shortlisted and put forward to a public vote.
More than 1,000 customers took part in the voting process, with the Oasis Centre for Young People being awarded the top grant of £3,000.
Halton Haven Hospice in Runcorn and the Steve Prescott Foundation in Warrington were voted runners-up and will each receive grants of £1,000. ....

Medical emergencies can occur without warning and patients often lose the ability to state their health care choices. As an emergency medicine physician, I observe family conflict and unnecessary suffering and distress created when patients arrive at the hospital without advance directives. Loved ones are left to wonder about the patient’s choices.
Be prepared. I urge all adults to have frank discussions with loved ones and document your choices in writing. Designate someone you trust to speak for you in a medical crisis and ensure that person knows your preferences if the situation is dire. ....

Complete end-of-life planning
As an employee of Haven Hospice in 2003, I was asked to be the coordinator of “end of life” issues in our community.
A terrific committee developed the Advance Directive Kit. Subsequently, I had the rewarding opportunity to hold many community workshops, related to decision making, planning ahead and describing one’s wishes and values about quality of life. It has been a real privilege, to relate so closely with people, in meaningful dialogue about such personal thoughts and values.
All of us in health care understand the seriousness of this process, in dealing with care at the end of life. I urge everyone to complete this planning, designating someone to speak for you, if the time occurs that you cannot speak for yourself. ....

Roxella “Rosie” Smith was born on May 1, 1941, in Leefield, Georgia, to Joe Brown and Effie Mae Smith. She received her education through the Bulloch County Public Schools.
   At an early age, she joined Jerusalem A.M.E. Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board and was a member of the Willing Workers Club.
   Rosie worked for many years as a nanny and homemaker. She enjoyed traveling, working in puzzle books, baking, cooking for her family and talking on the phone to family and friends.
   Rosie was truly one of a kind. She loved and cared for everyone, especially her family. ....
