WASHINGTON â Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred announced recently that âthe best way to demonstrate our values as a sport is by relocating this yearâs All-Star Game and MLB Draftâ away from Atlanta. Apparently, Georgiaâs new election law â whose net effect, The Washington Postâs Fact Checker blog found, âwas to expand the opportunities to vote for most Georgians, not limit themâ â was such a violation of baseballâs values that the exhibition game could not be played there. But apparently it wasnât a violation of baseballâs values to hold an exhibition game in 2016 in Havana between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban national team. In an interview with ESPN during that game, Manfred exulted how Cuba is âa place where we would want to play regularlyâ and that âat a minimumâ heâd like to start playing regular-season games in Havana, and eventually have an MLB team based on the communist island. âBaseball could be significant in terms of driving the economy and development here in Cuba,â he said.
