Opinions | What today’s Second Amendment activists forget: The right to not bear arms

A radical vision of gun rights and the Second Amendment unites broad swaths of the Trump coalition. This includes the mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 and those who have called for armed demonstrations in all 50 state capitals and a “Million Militia March” around the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. Small groups of protesters toted their guns to capitols and statehouses in Texas, Ohio, Michigan and Oregon on Sunday, and a larger number is expected Monday in Virginia, where an estimated 20,000 people turned up for a gun-rights rally last year at the Richmond Capitol. On the 2020 campaign trail, President Trump steadily ratcheted up his rhetoric on the Second Amendment, saying that Democrats “want to confiscate your guns” and that Biden was “against God, he’s against guns.”
