here we are. we re standing around. you are just back from ames, iowa, where this big straw poll was held this weekend. michele bachmann seems to be the front-runner, at least in iowa. at least in iowa. an interesting look at the field. she now looks big on that momentum. another gop favorite, rick perry officially jumping into the race over the weekend. bachmann has little to celebrate with him now in the race. they both spoke at the same fund-raiser last night as the republican field has a new top tier this morning. the latest straight ahead. also ahead, an eerie seen in norway. the gunman who allegedly killed 77 people, 69 of them at a youth camp, was brought back to the island where it happened to reconstruct the massacre. he was kept on a leash by police. we re going to get more on that, as well. plus, will casey anthony live with her parents now that she s been ordered to return to orlando in just 12 days to serve probation on a fraud conviction? should she receive protective custody from the police? we ll get the latest from florida just ahead. first, we want to begin with the 2012 presidential news and the race shifting into high gear for both the republicans and for president obama. nbc s kelly o donnell is still in des moines, iowa. kelly has the latest. good morning. reporter: good morning, david. the republican race for the white house has hit a reset button. after this weekend s straw poll michele bachmann is in the top tier followed by ron paul. and the results forced out one of the big names, just as one of the biggest personalities announced he s in. a brand-new rivalry in the gop race. hi, everybody. it s great to see you. reporter: michele bachmann basking in her victory at the iowa straw poll. this is my copy of the waterloo courier today. i hope you enjoyed it. i know i did. reporter: and rick perry for the first time introducing himself to waterloo, iowa. yeah. howdy. reporter: both appeared at the same republican dinner sunday night, a match to own the spotlight. as a candidate for the president of the united states. reporter: the texas governor shook up the race, jumping in over the weekend. sometimes it kind of takes me a while to get into something, like this presidential race. but let me tell you, when i m in, i m in all the way. reporter: and that race looks different now. former minnesota governor tim pawlenty bowed out after placing a distant third in the straw poll. i wish it would have been different but the pathway forward for me doesn t exist. reporter: mitt romney wasn t here, opting not to compete in saturday s straw poll, and yet perry actually got more write-in votes than romney, whose name did appear on the ballot, turning to political theater. the next president of the united states, michele bachmann. reporter: bachmann s campaign brought in its own announcer, music, and lighting to set her apart for the cameras. and bachmann used a stage whisper to go after the president. yes, people feel it now, the fire. they ve recognized that obama can be beat. reporter: perry used his texas swagger to claim mr. obama has harmed the economy. the president of the united states has a pen, and it s called a veto pen. and i will use it until the ink runs out, if that s what it takes, to get the message we re not spending all the money. reporter: and one more way bachmann tried to remind the iowa crowd that she is one of them and that she had won their straw poll. the congresswoman brought an all american treat. i brought the biggest, fattest, deepest apple pie. reporter: a thank-you, gift, she said, to the oldest republican mother in the league. 100? oh, my goodness! reporter: well, rick perry may be the last candidate to get to the iowa state fair but he will be here today, seeing everything, meeting people, talking with the state s governor, as well. he s been texas governor more than ten years, but in iowa he s also emphasizing he was an eagle scout and participated in 4h. david? all right, kelly o donnell, thanks very much. chuck todd is nbc s white house correspondent and political director and host of the daily rundown. he s in cannon falls, minnesota, stop number one on preside stop one of president obama s bus tour. he s got tracking numbers out. 39%. he s hitting the road. also in the midwest, which he knows is an important battleground for him next year. what s the game plan here? is he talking about what he can do with congress or just now turn on the republicans? reporter: no, it s more of both turning on the republicans and trying to run against congress. but i tell you, this is sort of turning conventional wisdom a bit upside-down. the obama team has been taking comfort in the fact as they believe this republican race is moving to the right, that it s a race to the right, and they take comfort in that and they think that s going to help them long term. as that happened and it was a lot of attention over the last four or five days, david, as that happened the president s numbers have still gone down and that gallop number dropped in the daily tracking below 40 for the very first time in the presidency. it can be kind of like an ekg all the time, but it s the first time dropping be low that just as he s getting here. look, the midwest is where the president won his presidential primaries and won his presidency. and he s hitting them now. first of all, we re talking about all the republicans now in the race and the top tier has been created there. what about some people not in the race? what are you seeing out of that group? well, david, as you know, sarah palin won t go she s not saying she s not running. she s still considering herself a potential candidate. we can tell you that she was acting like one at the state fair and looking very comfortable doing it. we still know that paul ryan, wisconsin congressman, chris christie, they still have major republican donors. a lot of the bush pioneers that have yet to jump in, yet to support romney, perry, or bachmann, that they re calling them saying, hey, are you guys going to consider it, rethink jumping in? with pawlenty getting out, the other establishment candidate against romney, those calls have already been increasing, i ve been told. it s going to be let s see how rick perry does. if he has staying pow, we i don t think you will hear those calls. let s go back to president obama and the issue about how he s going to run against certain members of congress. i had congresswoman bachmann on meet the press yesterday. asked her about the debt ceiling, she adamantly opposed it. this was the exchange we had. all the people in washington said we had to raise the debt ceiling. all the people out in america said, don t raise the debt ceiling. that s the problem with washington, they re not listening to the people. why do they think it s the right thing to do? because representatives are supposed to represent the people that they serve. the people that they re serving are saying, you guys don t have it figured out. this issue of the opinion on the debt ceiling driving her vote, is this something the president uses as a potential wedge, and even more mainstream candidates in the republican party? yeah, you know, last night at this waterloo event, rick santorum has been hitting michele bachmann for that debt ceiling position, saying that s irresponsible, saying what else are you going to cut? so it isn t just president obama that s going to be hitting around there. she s got a target on her back right now, and santorum, who stood trying to get into the first tier and trying to be taken as accepted as a major candidate out here, he s starting to hit her hard. he hit her hard last night. i think tim pawlenty in that debate last week, he opened up this line of attack and is going to make it easier for rick perry to do it. interesting little game of 3-d chess here going on. mitt romney doesn t want to see michele bachmann get taken down too quickly because he likes the idea that michele bachmann ties for rick perry for tea party conservatives. chuck, thanks very much. coming up on 7:10. once again, here s savannah. the indiana state fair is expected to reopen today for the first time since that tragic accident this weekend. a strong gust of wind caused a concert stage to collapse on saturday, killing at least five people and injuring dozens more. nbc s ron is at the fair grounds in indianapolis this morning. ron, good morning. reporter: savannah, good morning. the indiana state fair is one of the most popular in the country. this grandstand was filled with people saturday night. there was an area around the sage called the sugar pit, also full of people, when the unthinkable happened. minutes after they told the crowd the severe weather was possible, it was reality. a wind gust estimated between 60 and 70 miles an hour hit the stage and the overhead rigging crushing down on concert goers. chris lost sight of his son and wife in the chaos. i don t know. we were in the stands. and then the big gust of wind came. the stage came over and i took off down there to see if they needed help. reporter: ominous looking clouds hovered in the sky as people raised to look the twisted metal, cables, and lighting off those trapped underneath. some were carried from the scene. folding tables became gurneys. individuals ran to the trouble, not from the trouble, by the hundreds. reporter: the dead included a 23-year-old recent college grad who dreamed of teaching, a 51-year-old technician who respond to rigging, the spotlight, and 29-year-old community worker. it happened so fast. it just came down. i saw people running. people were underneath the stage trying to get out. reporter: fair officials were looking at the fast approaching storm, contacting the national weather service four times. a severe thunderstorm watch was issued three hours before the collapse, upgraded to a warning ten minutes before. the announcer relaying that warning to the crowd. some left right away but many stayed behind. two hours out, they issued that warning indicating the potential of gusts in excess of 50 miles an hour. unfortunately it s impossible to say when the strongest gust will hit. the band sugarland was preparing to take the stage. they issued a statement on twitter, writing, we are praying for our fans and the people of indianapolis. the engineers were on the ground here yesterday all day trying to figure out what went wrong. the fair was closed yesterday. scheduled to reopen today. they will begin the day with a public prayer for those who lost their lives here over the weekend. thank you. it s 7:12. now once again, here s david. savannah, thanks. now to the famine crisis, raging in the horn of africa. a cholera epidemic is sweeping through somalia, making the situation there even more severe. ann is in the capital of mogadishu this morning. some of the images she has seen there that she is reporting on has been disturbing. ann, good morning. reporter: david, that s right, good morning. in the famine of biblical proportions in which 11 million people are at risk here in somalia and four other african nations, now comes an epidemic of cholera. it has spread through dirty water and, so far, at least 180 people have died from it and, once again, children are the most vulnerable. to talk about it is so hard, she tells us about losing a child of this cholera. my son was my world, she says, even at 8, he helped me with the younger children. i am destroyed. her husband before the famine says it is difficult to talk about the future. all we can think about is food. and their 2-year-old son who is sick somewhere in this overwhelmed hospital. where a growing number of children are dying of hunger and now disease. 1-year-old fatima is barely holding on. they estimate it s already killed some 30,000 children in the last three months. this young boy died sunday. his family carrying him home for burial. your child? with more than 630,000 children still in jeopardy the world is struggling to keep up with the need. this unicef plane landed in mogae gish sh mogadishu this morning. and first aide workers are beginning to arrive. getting people access to food. hope the security remains good and that we can continue to work here, because that s what needs to happen. reporter: humanitarian effort been so dangerous. even feeding centers have been targeted by suicide bombers in mogadishu. african union peacekeepers pushed back islamic militants just days ago. and this weekend the prime minister calls for a military force just to protect food convoys. as humanitarians prioritize the hungry, women and young children first. this 23-year-old somali aide worker is saying, i would appeal to both christians and muslims to help these people. they are innocent. even seasoned aide workers can be overwhelmed. the world s food programmer susan susana nickle. how do you come out of that? but today there is a little hope. they lost one son to cholera, returned to the central hospital to find their 2-year-old getting better. he weighed just six pounds when they brought him in, but now doctors say he will survive. and human rights watch report out today says people are at the greatest risk in areas outside this city because of al shabaab militants controlling the areas. of course, they ve been linked to al qaeda. humanitarians can t even reach those areas so we don t really know how bad the situation is there now. despite the pockets of fighting, here in mogadishu, we can tell you that many aid agencies including the international red cross, doctors without borders, and the world food program, among others, is reaching people in need here, david. ann, such a tough story to see. thank you very much. i know you re going to have more from the crisis zone there tomorrow. all right. let s take a turn and get a check of the other top stories of the morning from natalie morales over at the news desk. good morning. good morning, everyone. in the news this morning, in norway confessed killer anders returned to the youth camp where he killed 69 people, reenacting the bloodbath to police shot by shot. nbc s michelle ckosinski has moe now. two different locations, he has not admitted criminal guilt in court. as he walked around this island and demonstrating how he killed as young as 14, police say still he shows no remorse. security was extreme. now unarmed man, police, followed the same route he took one day last month when he admittedly killed 77 people. they dressed him in a bright bullet proof vest, now for his safety. attached him to a sort of leash and let him lead them for eight hours, explaining, even demonstrating how he shot dozens of teenagers here at the youth camp. translator: there was no expression of regret for his actions. reporter: just as he appears here, police say he was calm, detailed, cooperative, gave new information. the attack itself july 25th lasted an hour before police could arrive and stop it. before it they say he set off a car bomb outside government offices in the capital killing eight people. in a manifesto driistributed ju before the attacks he said he planned it for years, motivated by strong anti-muslim sentiment and religious views. now back on that island 77 deaths later he appears to be telling everything. and police are facing questions and criticism now over how they handled the attack. his attorney just said that he called police ten times during the attacks to try to surrender, but that eight of those calls were unanswered. natalie? michelle kosinski reporting from london. in iraq this morning a string of coordinated bombings from kirkuk to baghdad, took at least 56 people, dozens were wounded. new reports this morning that pakistan allowed chinese military engineers to examine photographs and even walk away with samples of the american stealth helicopter that crashed on osama bin laden s compound. they intended to destroy all evidence of the downed chopper that was thought to have employed secret and unknown cape i believes. important new health information for parents this morning. nearly 20% of children with autistic older sibling will develop a t. disorder, too. that rate is much higher than previously thought. and when a tragic car crash killed monica benson s husband and one of her daughter s last year no one noticed that caesar, the family dog, had run away from the wreck. one year later the missing maltese was reunited with his family after showing up in an animal shelter in new mexico. workers traced him to the bensons who lived 1500 miles away in michigan through his microchip. benson said this is the best news we ve received in a year, giving them a little bit of happiness there. 7:20 right now. turn it back over to savannah and david. natalie, thank you. now let s get a first check of the weather. mr. roker is in chicago this morning where he competed in a half marathon over the weekend. the running man. al, do we hear right, you ve got your personal best time? live in oakland. she joins us with the latest. good morning. reporter: good morning to you, laura. oakland police very busy over the past ten hours, in this shooting i think one of the things that stand out is all of the evidence markers here in the street. more than 30 of them. an police say most are shell casings. two people opened fire on a man here at 12th avenue overnight after 1:00 in the morning. he was driven to the hospital and is listed in critical condition this morning. there were two other shootings starting about 9:30 last night. a teen shot near martin luther king jr. way and another, a man, a woman and two kids shot, all expected to be okay. they are still working out details on that shooting. so far no arrests in any of these shootings. live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay. it s 7:27. meteorologist christina loren. the sun s been out almost an hour now inland as a result you re warming up into the 60s in some cities at 61 in concord, chilly in santa officials now believe robyn gardner is dead and they think the man she traveled with is responsible. the latest coming up straight ahead. plus, two incredible stories of survival. a 12-year-old boy scout was forced to build his own shelter and cover himself in dirt to survive a frigid night alone in the utah woods. he s going to open up to us about his harrowing ordeal in just a moment. great story. also we re going to hear from the man swimming off the coast of north carolina when he was mauled by a shark. why he owes his life to his fast-thinking family. we re going to begin in eye rue ba and search for clues in the disappearance of 35-year-old robyn gardner. janet, good morning. reporter: david, good morning to you. prosecutors in aruba today will ask a judge to keep robyn gardner s travel calm upon i don t know locked up as they look for evidence that he was somehow involved in her disappearance. it comes as a disturbing picture of a man back home, a man with a history of volatile relationships with women. in a washington, d.c. suburb fbi agents swarm the home of gary giardano friday, carting off bags of personal belongings. another search in aruba, down an abandoned mine on a secluded stretch of the island. no sign of robyn gardner. a few miles from the pristine beach where she was said to have gone missing he is locked up in these cells. they believe gardner is dead and giardano is responsible. we decided that his position changed from victim, witness, to a suspect. and then he was arrested. reporter: he consistently said he doesn t know what happened to her. we issued another denial saying, we can state that no felony has been committed by him. he comes by new disturbing relationship about his relationship with women back home. twice divorced with three teenage boys. in court papers his first wife wrote, he can t control his anger. his second marriage lasted less than two years. that ex-wife released this statement. there were marital issues, hence the divorce. local police were involved in one incident. i really hope he isn t involved in this young lady s disappearance. and then there are the women he dated. two have filed restraining orders within the past three years. in court papers, one described how he attacked her, forced sex out of her and then physically assaulted her. he was never charge with a crime. this is one of his neighbors who spoke exclusively to nbc news and asked us to conceal her identity out of fear. she knows some of the women she has dated. he doesn t get what he wants, he becomes extremely aggressive with women and he s hurt them. reporter: but what happened in aruba? little is known beyond the couple stayed together at the marriott and dined at a beachside bar. this is the stretch of beach where gary said he last saw robyn gardner when they were snorkeling together. many say it s curious. it s full of rocks, in the working part of town from the tourist trap and people who come here are primarily local. amelia alvarez was at the beach when emergency crews arrived. it was close to sun down, she said, when few are still snorkeling. i was very surprised at night when i heard them, that they were looking for her over that area. reporter: alvarez, who has been coming here ten years, says this shallow cove is where people snorkel, not the jagged edges along open ocean where the search took place. his attorney yesterday disputed claims that his client is not cooperating with this investigation. meanwhile, an attorney back home who used to represent giardano said he would be very surprised if his former client was involved saying he never saw a hint of anger from him. david, back to you. janet shamlian, thank you very much. we want to get another check of the weather in report to probation officers in florida, this is tied to her check fraud case. kerry sanders is in orlando this morning with the latest. kerry, good morning. good morning, savannah. casey anthony thought she had fulfilled her probation time when she was released from jail a month ago. now the judge says not so. she had good reason to think so business this letter told her she had. the judge says this is a clerical error that he has now corrected. accuse of murdering her 2-year-old daughter caylee she walked out of the jail to freedom. but now after a month in hiding judge belvin perry has ordered casey back to florida. after reviewing her sentence in another case, for passing bad checks which was all documented on store security cameras, judge perry writes, it s clear, the defendant s probation was to start when she was released. and the notification that she had already served her probation while she sat in jail was a clerical error. to let that mistake go unchecked would make it a mockery of justice. casey s year long probation requires, among other things, she report her income and who is paying her. casey anthony s tattoo the bella vita talks about anything but the life under probation where you ve got to be squeaky clean, get a job, tell the truth, subject to random drug testing. if you blow it, you could wind up back in jail. reporter: this probation order comes at the same time a florida child welfare agency report has been made public, unlike the jury, officials found casey at fault in her daughter s death. the department of children and families concludes that the actions or the lack of actions by the alleged perpetrator ultimately resulted or contributed in the death of the child/victim. in the probation case, casey s been told she has until august 26th to report, but where she will show up is unclear. florida has probation offices in every county, and so depending upon where she is, she could report to another area of florida. reporter: casey s security is a serious concern. it is reported that the defendant is the nation s most hated person. judge belvin perry said in equal market research, in the total dislike category of the survey, anthony easily topped the charts at 94%. i m pretty sure she would have to be under some sort of protective custody. people here don t think too much of her. reporter: casey anthony s defense attorneys reportedly plan to appeal the judge s order. if casey anthony returns to serve her probation here in orlando, her parents, george and cindy, say she will not be living with them. 12-year-old boy scout who was forced to use his training to survive a night alone in the rugged woods of utah. it all began when that boy became separated from his group on a hike. we re going to talk to him in just a moment. but first, here s nbc s george lewis. reporter: in the rugged backcountry of northern utah near the wyoming border 12-year-old jared ropelato was on a boy scout trek when he got separated from his group about noon last friday. authorities launched a massive search, sheriff s deputies aided by a helicopterse, horseback teams and volunteers, about 200 people. jared s mother dawn waited at the search command post worried about how he would do in the freezing nighttime temperatures. i thought he was dressed warmer and found out this morning that he wasn t. but i m sure he will have been blessed. he has to have been blessed through the night. i cross my fingers. reporter: finally saturday morning those prayers were answered as a group of searchers found jared. here being comforted by his older brother kevin. jared, shook up but releiieved that people came for him. i would like to say thank you for all the help that they gave. i m glad. i am elated! i can t even believe it. i m happier than i think i ve ever been. reporter: it turns out his scouting skills helped him survive. scout, he tells us how to build it and how to like stay warm. reporter: now, safe at home, jared says he s not going to give up on scouting, having learned a lesson about not wantwant e wandering off on his on. for today, i m george lewis. 12-year-old jared ropelato joined us earlier this morning along with his mom dawn. we began by asking his mom dawn whether those 20 hours waiting for news from his son was exkrush eighting. it was for me and the neighbors, the community, i think everybody kind of went through the same feelings that i did. i think i was comforted maybe even a little bit more than people in the community and stuff because we had so many prayers on our behalf. so i was able to, you know i don t know. i just wasn t i was calm. i wasn t worrying about all the bad things that could happen. i was i was blessed, and i was thinking that if i was blessed that much by the prayers and feeling that peace and comfort as much as i did, i knew that jared was, too. so that was good. i think everybody experienced the excitement or, you know, worry. i know he s the baby of the family, you ve got a big family. did you know he had it in him, to be so quick thinking, to build this little hole in the ground that would keep him warm over the night? truth is i didn t know. i didn t know that he would be able to do that. i knew he was a smart kid, but i didn t know. i didn t know if he would do that, do something he surprises me like that, or, you know, that s what i was hoping for, but he surprised me and made me proud because i did not know. jared, i want to get a little bit more out of you. you talked about building this shelter. part of your scout training, you had a little bit of shelter and hole and brush and sticks and what not. did you panic at any point? what was going through your mind during the night? just hope that, like, i didn t see any animals. i tried to walk around. i was hoping that the next day i wouldn t see any. i wanted to be safe. did you cry, jared? yeah. we can understand that. we re so glad you made it home safely. we know your mom selective hearing is the norm. you know what? it s mostly benign. does not feel good to be tuned out but it s the same thing you do with your kids. you ve just got to get a signal when you really need his attention. it s a post-it. we are leaving at 11:00. otherwise, you chat, his mind is on other things. interestingly, majority of men feel the same way in the opposite direction, in fact, their wives do listen to them. this is the difference between men and women. i hesitate with that, but it all depends on what you mean by listen. does it mean you agree? that s the thing. reporter: taken to arkansas children s hospital, james was placed in the intensive care unit. his core temperature had spiked at over 108 degrees. typical of a heat stroke victim. his organs were shutting down. it s cooking. the same changes are happening in your body that would happen if we heated the body temperature up in an oven. it s an injury that has a pretty high mortality. he was not recognizable. he had tubes everywhere. two weeks, the longest, out by thanksgiving. we were in a panic. we never expected that. we just did not know that it could be that bad. reporter: patty james oldest child had serious live damage. he was in a medically induced coma. and as his kidneys began to fail, he went on dialysis. for three weeks his mother rarely left his side. there was no choice for me. that s my son. i could not let him wake up and his mom not be there. reporter: will eventually did wake up. and by the end of last fall he was back on the field, now preparing for his final games. james core temperature is monitored by an internal thermometer he swallows before practice. and the team all takes an ice cold plunge during preseason s hottest days. despite his brush with death, he s a positive example for his team. i want to be there for my team. i want to show them that, you know, hey, even though this happened i m going to be here for your guys, i m going to lead you guys all the way. i m going to help out any way i can. now will was lucky with the outcome of his case. already this month three football players have died from heat stroke with several other suspected cases across the country. amy robach, thank you. will s mom is with us now along with the professor of kinetics institute and nbc s chief medical correspondent, dr. nancy snyderman. we saw will at the piece hitting it again at practice. how hard was it for you to let him back on the field and how is it for you now? it was difficult to let him get back into practice. we worry about him. the ingestible sensor helps to aleve some of the worry. monitors the temperature now. monitors the temperature to make certain that he remains cool, if he gets too hot they can pull him off the field. it allows us to stop it before it gets too bad for him. dr. nancy, a lot of people may not realize how serious a heat stroke can be. we had a position in the piece, our organs are cooking. you can go into organ shut down. this isn t just a case of i m sweating, i feel nauseated and maybe you re lightheaded. this is when you really can t regulate your temperature. you stop sweating. internally when you get above 104 degrees that s when you talk about brain damage, kidney damage, liver damage. really, to be very frank, you start to cook inside. the priority is to get that temperature down immediately. i know you want to do a bit of education here because i think all of us if we ran across an athlete in this situation the first thing we would want to do is rush him to a hospital, a doctor. you say that isn t always the best thing to do. why? the institute had assisted the state of arkansas with trying to make positive changes. one of the most important things that you need to understand is to survive the heat stroke, you have to minimize the number of minutes the person is hypo they are mick. you ve got to get that person s temperature down as fast as you can. cool them fast, cooling within ten minutes, people survive heat stroke. put them in a cold shower, put them in a cold tub. you should be prepared for it. medical trainer takes care of these athletes. get them into the tub as soon as possible, get their temperature down as soon as possible and get them home for dinner with their family and avoid a tragedy. we have treated hundreds and hundreds of people. the heart is stronger than you think it is. what happens is once the organs start to shut down there s a cascade effect, one organ shuts down another one. the whole thing is, if you have nothing more than a cooler, get the soft drinks out of the cooler and use that ice. and if someone comes and says, get in my car, let s go to the hospital. don t do it right away. make sure, call 911. but just think on site, get the temperature down as quickly as possible. you re advising them to have a tub, if they can, high schools have a tub right by the field. if a risk of heat stroke you should be prepared, tub ready to go. stir the water while they re in it. if not, use a cold shower in the locker room or douse them with cold, wet towels. patty, did you ever dream it could be so serious? the truth is kids will try and do anything to get out of their homework. if you give them a space they feel ownership in, that they feel good about, chances are they re going to spend more time doing their homework. that s the point. for example, for kids from age 8 to 13. right. the first thing is a good chair to invest? invest in a good chair that will grow with the kids. don t throw a folding chair in a corner or something like that. before you everybody bn buy the make sure you have a good spot designated for homework. it could be at the end of the hallway. depends on the personality of your child. if your child likes to be where the action is, that s okay. some kids can concentrate like that. so the end of the hallway, a corner of a formal dining room, or an area in the living room or their room if they need solitude and that s what their concentration requires. you have your space. you want the chair. you invest in one you can use it later. i don t like throw-away furniture. the point is this chair can be used as a desk chair through college. you could use this as your own desk chair eventually. invest in good pieces, then you re to the going to keep buying things and throwing them away. what about lighting? obviously key. lighting is super important. this is a lamp from al friedman. $45. this is great because it s kind of sophisticated like an architect s lamp. but the best way to, i found, this goes for adults, too, when you have ownership in your space and you feel like you contributed it makes you feel better about yourself. for instance, we framed all the kid s artwork and we have been here for past projects and fabric covered boxes. make it fun. make it if they bring something great home, throw it in a frame. i love the kids, buy school supplies from a big shop so they re not leaving the desk every five minutes. they will get up and search for that tape if it s not sitting right at their desk. make sure they have their own. quickly i want to point out. cute wall calendar to keep up with their own schedule. homework assignments with go on that dryer race board, field trips, anything like that. they can look at their week and their month ahead. it gives them a good skill set when they are older. as they grow their desk changes, too. you use this for teenagers but you used the same desk we had over there. same desk. akea, it s great. it can be use as a vanity later on in college, if you can think that way now that they re in elementary school. but this is great. the changes here are the framed artwork goes away. a bulletin board goes away for movie stubs, photos, things like that. you don t need as much as many school supplies because it s more of electronic hub. cell phone, iphone, laptop, all of those things go in a teenage desk. and then we ve added a filing cabinet, which is great as well. so this works out. and then this is actually the chair from over there. actually there is a different chair but what we did was we slipcovered this chair. this is also from akea. you can add an initial, added ribbon on the bottom. this actually looks much more sophisticated than the other one but they re both really dedicated work spaces. i can t let you go before i ask you about this. the second season of the nate berkus show ? it s like a pressure cooker. cooks it very, very, very fast. when i went to north carolina,  learned to do pork shoulder barbecue style, but takes like ten hours to cook it. this takes an hour and a half. wow. tell me what you re doing. flour, salt, canola oil and water. you mix everything. i can get involved here? sous chefs get a little tough sometimes. i don t want you to yell at me if i make a mistake here. i can t really do anything. don t want you to get dirty. you mix it. it s like playdough. it s like playdough. you mix everything like this until you get very, very nice, like this one. this is what it ultimately looks like. yes. so you do that. you can have any kind of salt. so now take this one and with bone, with the bone. better with the bone because you get more flavor. all that salt encasing this meat, what does that do to the tenderness of the meat? flavors the meat. the salt is your best friend in cooking. so the consistency, this is not going to break apart? no. look at that. push, push. yeah, that s good. all set. up, flip. cooking is easy. okay. you cook for one hour and a half. you put that in the oven. hit. now, if we speed ahead here. i want to talk about that. here, it comes out of the oven. it s hard. this is very hard. this is hard. now you need to break it. you need a hammer because your hammer is your best friend. i m just going to go right in there. please do. bam. okay. is that enough? translator: sometimes it s very scary. you can t go out because there s a lot of violence outside, and you can t go out to play. at night you hear many gunshots. you see dead people laying on the ground or you see other guys throwing the people off the cliff down to the river. reporter: today that same river looks a little more peaceful. ryan is one of the 200 children part of the alonzo movement, a growing organization for youth created in alonzo s memory. he is the program s executive director. how much love do they need? they need a lot of love. most of them come from families that are disintegrated and they go out on the streets looking for love, looking for someone that would give them options. and unfortunately the ones that are right there are the gangs, the criminals. but with this program we re offering love, we re offering friendship to them, and they come here and they love it. reporter: the alonzo movement gives these kids a safe place to follow their dreams through soccer, art, community service, and dance. supported solely by donations, the program also built this schoolhouse and through scholarships, students have a new passion for learning. translator: they taught us value. they help us learn to read and to respect our teachers. reporter: for alonzo s wife erica, the promise of an education through the they were hood s youth eases her pain. do you think even though you lost your husband and she lost her father, now these kids all have a better future? translator: even though it was bad, and we had a loss, something good is coming out of it because it s reaching out to kids because there was no program like this before. reporter: life out of death, one community discovering hope and a promising future of their next generation. what are your dreeps for the future? al, thank you. and now about that bizarre mystery in aruba. disappearance of 35-year-old american robyn gardner two weeks ago. authorities believe she has died and they think her traveling companion gary giordano may be responsible. our next guest claims she had her ownby czar encounter with giordano. he wanted to take her 18-year-old on a trip as well. first of all, tell me what happened here. you received a call after there were photos of taylor on a modeling website. explain. she s always wanted to model. and act and do tv commercials and things like that. so we set her up a nice website. she had some beautiful pictures. and he saw the pictures. and he contacted me. he called us, wanting for her to come model for him in eyaruba. you got on the phone and pretended to be taylor to find out what this was wul about. i did that. he was very relaxed. when he called he was too relaxed. he called. he asked about her modeling name. i just i said in her voice, pretty much, you know, yes. and he said, hey, this is gary. what are you up to, like somebody i knew. and i knew i hadn t talked to this person before. so that was a red flag right there. and before we get to you, taylor, when did you put it together that this may be the same person who is now suspected in aruba in connection with the disappearance of robyn gardner? i was watching the news. after he and i had had our initial conversation i looked him up. i saw his picture. i got his bio. so i knew who he was and i knew he wasn t really a producer. and then when i was watching the news i saw the picture of him flash on the news. and that right there, i turned the tv up and listened. particular since, of course, he mentioned aruba. taylor, when you heard about this and realized this could be the same guy, what was in your mind? at first i was in shock. i didn t really know what to think about it. i was kind of like no, way, there s no way it could have been. all kids think, you know, it s not going to happen to me, you know? it could have. when your mom first said we shouldn t do this modeling job, you said you were kind of mad. you thought this sounded like a pretty good gig. at first i was like it could sound good but $5,000 for one photo shoot was a lot, especially for somebody starting out. so i was thinking there s no way. and then she gave me that little bit of extra boost to say no, completely no. and i know you contacted the authorities, the fbi came and talked to you? yes. the fbi has been to my house. they did take a statement, checked my facts. and they re still doing their investigation. and i m helping as much as i can. taylor, how does this make you feel about pursuing modeling? i know you ve got some pictures online. some of these websites actually seem to advertise adult entertainment industry jobs. i mean, you got any second thoughts about maybe putting your pictures there? i mean, i thought about it all before, but i still want to pursue everything, everything i ve worked to do, everything i ve worked to become. it s a life goal for me. you modeled yourself in the past. a long time ago. fair enough. does this seem like the sort of thing that happens commonly? are there any tips for moms who may have daughters who want to be in this industry? it does. it happens all the time. i ve been in and out of the industry for 20 years. i have seen i ve seen some horrendous things. i ve seen girls disappear. i ve seen things like gary. my biggest tip is, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. and the fbi give you any indication about where they are in their investigation? very healthy. you know fried bacon. what we re going to do here is we re just going to assemble there. plate the tomatoes with it. it s all that, tomatoes are a traditional part of succatash. we have the corn, tomatoes, field peas, okra. all of this together. so good. kind of stacking it there. exactly. makes for a very dramatic healthy big mac. when does the bacon come in? momentarily. bacon fan, aren t you? can i just take it? don t crumble it, though. big statement of bacon. there we go. now you can put the bacon on. there we go. okra. really crazy, criss-cross. works for me. one of the finishing touches, first of all, i like to pour a little of the balsamic vinegar over the dish because it s such a delicious salad. and then we top it with just a little bit of aoli, a mayonnaise that has garlic, chives, a little bit of cream fresh, and it s that little richness that we add to the dish that sets everything off. let me tell you. that s an entree. is that amazing or what? yes, i went to rehoboth, my sister was in town. so all of us went to rehoboth and enjoyed it. it was like you had whiplash. one day was sparkling sunshine and the other day was torrential downpours. did you say hello to our drag queen friends there? first of all, we left our mark. if i had a nickel for everybody who said, is kathie lee with you guys? no, they re looking for you. they think your mother still lives there. well, my sister still has a place there. the same thing in michigan, i went to the beautiful town of holland, michigan forks a friend s wedding. craig and emily wierda. they have four beautiful kids, it was the first wedding in the family with the children. that is holland, michigan in may during the tulip festival. is this the wedding? no, that s not the wedding. just checking. the wedding was their eldest son, drew, marrying lindsay and that s the wierda kids and lindsay. so now there s five children. what a beautiful wow, that s quite the to-do. it s at hope college, a beautiful college there and the ceremony was held there. they have a live on a beautiful farm. so the 500 people were at the party afterwards. including bobbie thomas. bobbie thomas is like where s waldo? she was there with the devoss family, mike and emily and betsy devos are sisters. first of all, i m there, i m sitting midway down, because the front is for family. i lean over to the and there s bobbie thomas, with the de vos family. staying in the most beautiful home that i ve seen in my life. from the outside, because riff ralph li raf like me are not invited in. the rain was crazy yesterday. the day before it was a lot of those fronts come through, you know. the day before, it was a storm the likes of which i have never, ever seen. all night long. with thunder and lightning and the kabooms that knock you out of bed kind of thing that was finally arriving when we got here yesterday. they said we got more rain in new york than we did from a tropical storm in 98. it was 5.something in central park and eight at the airports. hopefully you weren t delayed too long, maybe a day and a half. hats off to al roker. who didn t come back, he s still in chicago, but he ran the half-marathon in three hours and two minutes. this guy with two replaced knees. get going, 13-plus miles, he does it. he s unbelievable. i don t know a happier guy. i honestly don t. he s that way every single day and you say, ow. listen, kathie, my dad drove a bus in brooklyn, in the bronx, what do i have to complain about? i ve got the world by the tail. he s a very grateful man. and a great inspiration to so many people. he lost an awful lot of weight. there s his wife, debra. changed his whole lifestyle. he s a role model now. i don t think i ve seen a bigger optimist than al. he s something else. here s something for you guys to think about at home. we were talking about this in the makeup room. how much time do you spend chit-chatting/gossiping with friends in any given day? they did a survey and said that women spend five hours a day chatting. you said no way. maybe some women do. i don t like the phone. if i m on the phone it s usually because there s something to do. there s an issue that has to be dealt with. or there s or it s business-related, you know. but just to chat? until i started adding up the day, like i was that can t be. i think about, i do, let s say i talk to karen for 30 minutes. every day. then i talk to my mom after the show every day at 11:00 for a little bit. my sister is in town, so i talk to her. and i talk to other friends of mine throughout the course of the day for a good hour. if you add it up and all the stuff in between the work stuff, like in the car, on the way, here, look at us here. that s another 20 minutes. but this is work. this is what we do for a living. but we would do it if we were having lunch. i don t know, in other words, i guess we re wasting an awful lot of time. unless there s very meaningful relationships that you re continuing. it s like your day-to-day stuff. they say we spend 25 minutes talking about weight and dieting. that s a waste of time. but it s fun to talk about, i like it. we spend a half an hour a week talking to our neighbors. i don t know my neighbors, i don t know who lives next to me. it s new york, an apartment. it really is and we talk to guys about work, because they re really not doctored in apparently anything else that we say. okay, all right. i don t know, a lot of these things, i wonder who they were talking to. it seems like an awful lot of time. 24 hours a day blah blah blah, exactly. hey, this is important! this is kind of a cute story. there were these factory workers, and they re out of canada. and they were told that they were laid off. and there were a bunch of, 18 guys laid off. played the lottery regularly and they decided they were going to play again. what do you think what happened after they got laid off, their $4 investment made each of them about $400,000 after taxes. each. each. how s that. you get laid off and you hit pay dirt. i like when stuff like that happens. i do, too. here s some more bad news. a new study out says that agreeable workers like nice people earn significantly more incomes than less agreeable nasty people. the cranky ones make more money. especially if you re a inform they man. it makes sense to me. i m of the philosophy of, if you work hard and buckle down, your boss is going to notice and say, hey, you re really working hard, i m going to give you a raise. but the people who get the raises are the guys, usually, who walk in, string themselves with christmas lights, talk about how great they are, and then you re like hey, and i m watching it, can t you see what s happening? this guy is bragging, i m doing twice the work and he gets the money. yeah, but you write about in your book, which is available now on paperback, that you you decided enough with that. i m not giving notice and you went up to jeff zucker s office and said, hey, i want the fourth hour of the today show. which was out of your comfort zone. and that happened because, i had to have a really rude awakening. i had to get sick and with breast cancer and then say hey, what am i afraid of. are you serious? i m afraid to go ask for something so simple. that you think you re right for. and it seemed so little at the time, so what. in comparison. so i think women do need to stand up more. i think the cranky rude ones wind up with the bigger paycheck and that s unnerving when you think about it. the guys the guys earn how much more? 18% more. ruder women earn 5% more. and you know who you are. no, that s the trouble. they don t know. but we know who they are. the study was done by professors from two different universities. so, i don t know. i think, i think it does tell us that we do have to be stronger in asking for it. you don t have to be rude. but i think you should be stronger in asking. you ask for raises when you feel like you deserve one? oh yeah. i m good at that. that s because i m not a beautiful person with a symmetrical face. who is selfish. that s the other thing we have it talk about. if you re gorgeous, you re selfish. they say if your face is perfectly symmetrical. it s very rare. it is rare. that you somehow are selfish. because you know what, you just people just do things for you. and you know, your life is simple. you re healthier, you re more attractive, better self-esteem. less of an incentive to cooperate. i do think if you re really gorgeous or handsome. i do think life is easier. you don t even realize, people want to help you and you don t even realize. and i always thought that the really pretty girls or the really handsome guys in high school at the time, didn t have the greatest personalities, because they didn t have to. why would they? [ ukulele ] time to take you into today s kitchen where we re getting saucy with dana cowan who is showing us how to reinvent our favorite summer parties. she s the editor in chief of food & wine magazine. and she s going to show us how to make chicken wings and guacamole like you have never had. are you a blur of all the food you made this summer. i go to weddings. and i don t cook. well maybe you re bored. in this case we re going to make instead of those deep fried chicken wings that are heavy and they put bleu cheese on them the way i like them. i have to try to convince you, because i m going make you cook. east meets west wings. first you boil they will. you cut the little tips off so they don t burn when they re in the broiler. and then we make the dressing. rice vinegar. three-quarters of a cup. half a cup of brown sugar. quarter of a cup of soy sauce. and you could use the light in case you wanted the low sodium. and you don t cook. and siracha chile, a little spice. two tablespoons of ginger. and sweet asian chile. this is the stuff that it s gloopy. that kids love because it s really sweet. all you need to do is put the top on. flip in the scallions. and grind that up? grind that up. and then we re going to do what are we doing? this is the sauce cooked down a little bit. and you just have it in there for little while. you get this amazing flavor. you re done. you can turn that off. and then. you just let them sit for a little bit. three minutes. and then i love to have you taste these, we ll take these out. okay. here, kath. what do you think? i don t know, we haven t tasted them yet. what are we making here? potato salad. we ve got a dressing for the potato salad that s incredibly healthy. it s hum mus, yogurt, chopped cornichons, a little onion. i m folding, if you don t mind. hoda s cooking. the great thing about this, it s so light. carrots? no celery. and we ll take the hummus out. that s delicious. with this potato salad dressing that we ve just made, you can use it with a potatoes, we ll fold in the potatoes, or you can just use it as a sauce on its own. i think that it s great on endive. i also too big. too much for you? you know, it s endive. it s endive. it s crunchy. don t leave me with the gauc. it s incredible. the key here is charred sk r scallions and jalapenos, a couple of minutes on the grill, you chop them fine and you take your haas avacado, you squeeze it and it gives a little bit. you know you ve got the right one. you scoop it out, mash it up. and at the end you put a little lyme, a little cilantro. you told me that those things you wouldn t have wanted it. but you like it. you like it, right? it adds the flavor. you know what, guess who is going to be on our show tomorrow? jeff bridges and he s going to perform for us. he s so great. it s kathie lee s birthday! i get jeff bridge force my fo birthday. have a great day, good-bye, birthday. have a great day, good-bye, everybody. captions by vitac www.vitac.com
