sides of the bay are getting serious about reigning in the occupy movement. police evicted protesters this morning following a flurry of weekend activity including flash mobs. linda. >> reporter: ann, you see behind me this park at 19th and telegraph clear and cleaned out. yesterday at this same time is when the protesters from occupy oakland did come here, tore down the fences and set up two dozen tents. this morning the oakland police officers got here and told them to get out. the majority of the campers did peacefully remove their tents and their belongings while police did stand by. but even among these protesters there were a few angry exchanges over whether they should leave or not. the people who live in the condos around the park did pressure city hall to remove this camp, and it was all done without any violent clashes. >> we have conducted this operation without the need for any kind of outside mutual aid. this is all run just with oakland police staff. there were no arrests, no uses of force, no reported injuries. probably the biggest part of the vandalism was a tent that came down last night. there's a broken window, and some vandalism. >> it is remaining a difficult path to strike the right balance between people's right to protest and free speech and keeping the public safe in these kinds of situations. we're going to continue to try to strike this balance and try to let people build the 99% movement, have their protest, but we're not going to allow new encampments. >> i'm very sympathetic for what they stand for but i don't want them to live in a park that's across the street from me. this is a public park. in fact, the residents come out here every morning with coffee. you can see them walking their dogs. we use this park every single day, and we're not allowed to use the park today. we're very welcome for them to come and use the park, but the park isn't for tents. it's not a campground. >> reporter: as the occupiers were leaving they did shout out that they were going to regroup, but as of tonight we don't know where that would be. and oakland police did emphasize they will not toll ler rate new encampments. the city warned them, and early this morning police raided occupy san francisco protesters camped outside the federal reserve on market street. the overnight raid resulted in several arrests. anger as police and public works crews moved in just after 1:00 a.m. to remove a dozen tents, the last to go on the market street sidewalk. >> it was kind of sad. they tore down a kitchen that feeds hundreds of people every day. >> reporter: six people were charged with interfering. >> when that's taken away from us it's just a government tactic to keep us ignorant so that we can't communicate with one another. >> reporter: all that's left is this maze of barricades and officers making sure no one moves back in. last night's raid comes on the heels of several others at occupy sf. the bulk of the encampment is still here, an estimated 200 tents, even though the city said it would only allow 100. >> there are too many kids out on the street. >> reporter: she came here to look for her son. he's been here for a few weeks and she hasn't heard from him in days. this camp has been declared a public health nuisance and there is widespread fear of a larger raid. >> i'm worried that my son can get arrested, thrown in jail, he's got a record for the rest of his life. as a parent, aim worried, but at the same time i have to bless these guys because they're fighting for our rights. more fallout tonight from that pepper spray incident at u c-davis two. campus police officers have been suspended. the video showing an officer spraying students sitting peacefully has gone viral on the internet. one attorney says the suspension is a step in the right direction. >> move! move! >> reporter: attorney jeffrey kravitz says this video speaks for itself. >> you see these officers. he says no. >> reporter: with word of two uc-davis police officers being put on administrative leave, kravitz is hoping this is just the beginning. >> ordinarily such people are arrested for would they've done, and i believe that these officers should be arrested and criminally processed. this is an unjustified assault. doesn't make any difference if you're wearing a police uniform or not. >> what he calls a peaceful protest. >> this is an you know credibly nonviolent movement. >> people are sitting on the ground. >> reporter: kravitz says the entire situation was handled wrong and the officers, even the ones just standing by, should face some kind of repercussions. >> if you want to live in a place where you never see people protesting in the parks, they've had places like that. go to the people's republic of china. this is america, and in america, in a democratic society, things aren't always clean and easy. freedom isn't free. it isn't easy. that's why it's called the home of the free and the land of the brave. it requires bravery. uc's president said he will implement a system-wide response to the pepper spray incident. an incident in which u c berkeley police were caught on top jabbing students with batons. there will be a meeting with all 0 campus transfers to talk about law enforcement response to nonviolent protest. a candlelight vigil for a fallen vallejo police officer gets underway in half an hour. he was shot and killed while pursuing a bank robbery suspect. the memorial will be held in front of city hall beginning at 6:00. a large turnout is expected. we will after complete report on the memorial on eyewitness news at 6:30. well, firefighters still on the scene in berkeley nearly 48 hours later. the area around the apartment building gutted by fire friday night. why streets and sidewalks are still closed tonight. after a bay bridge inspector is fired for falsifying safety reports, the next step this week for cal trans. a soggy weekend around the bay. patchy fog tomorrow by firefighters. the 2,000-acre fire is now 95% contained. fire crews are getting help from a snowstorm that hit the area. receding to prevent mudslides is beginning on the hillsides. the fire spread at a rate of 30 miles per hour because of gale- force winds. no cause has been found. streets around the apartment building in berkeley that caught fire friday night are still closed. that's because city officials say the building is unsafe. it took five engine companies several hours to get a handle on the fire. uc berkeleyly students who lived there are thou without a place to live. a public hearing to investigate quality assurance practices for bridge construction inspections. the state senate hearing follows a sacramento bee investigation that revealed falsified inspections by a cal- trans inspector. cal-trans says the inspector did not falsify reports but questions arose because of what is being called a culture of secrecy. >> it is a tough culture to crack. i've been in elected office with transportation a long time. it's hard to get to the truth. my argument, better just tell us the truth, it's going to come out sooner or later. >> the incident resulted in the firing of the employee and his supervisor. time is running out for a congressional committee to do its job. the six republicans and six democrats on the super committee have until wednesday to strike a deal. as drew levinson reports, the likelihood they will reach an agreement seems highly you know likely. >> reporter: while the nation's debt ticks up, time is running out for lawmakers to figure out how to cut the deficit. >> nobody wants to give up hope. reality is to some extent starting to overtake hope. >> reporter: the 12-member bipartisan super committee is charged with cutting $1.2 trillion from the deficit over the next decade. >> i think we're deep into the fourth quarter but there's still time on the clock. i don't think any of us want to let the time run out without trying everything possible to get there. >> reporter: to get there the panel needs to present a blueprint of a deal by monday. the congressional budget office has two days to review the proposal before the committee must vote. in a statement, the white house said, congress needs to do its job here and make the kind of tough choices to live within its means that american families make every day. democrats and republicans on the committee are dead-locked over taxes. >> on the other side there was an insistence that we have a trillion dollar tax increase. there was an unwillingness to cut any kind of spending at all unless there was a huge tax increase. >> the wealthiest of americans, those who earn over a million dollars every year, have to share, too, and that line in the sand we haven't seen any republicans willing to cross yet. >> reporter: congress created the super committee to end the summer debt standoff. if it can't resolve with a plan congress can pass the country faces severe >> you can if you like. it's all subjective. >> but football fans don't care. they were happy today. >> the 49ers, that may affect their travel plans to baltimore, because they're going to be in baltimore. they may have to leave earlier. the nascar championship comes down to the final lap. and can the cardinals knock the 49ers off their game? that's next. ,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,, on a day when the 49ers offense game, it was another spectacular on a day when the 49ers offense did not bring its a- game, another spectacular performance from the defense that forced five turnovers. jim harbaugh saying, we can clinch by next weekend. san francisco hosting the rival cardinals. rough day for david akers. he had two field goals blocked. yes, he is human. good thing the san francisco defense came to play. john skelton's pass into traffic picked off by patrick lewis. take another look. terrell brown could have picked it up. the 49ers led 9-0 at the half. they finally got in the end zone second half as arizona state's kyle williams goes in for the touchdown. look at this beautiful pass to vernon davis. 23-0. there was a blemish here. in the fourth quarter, early doucet smacks gholson on the head. they are 9-1, guaranteeing a winning record for the first time since 2002. >> i saw the hit, then he got up and retaliated. he's remorseful about it. he talked to the team. he understands that you can't retaliate. >> with the offense starting to click under palmer the vikings were a great match-up. hugh jackson's team had not played since november 10th. very well rested first quarter. adrian peterson goes in from 12 yards out. 7-0 vikings. his league leading 11st rushing touchdown. peterson's fortune quickly turned. michael huff rolls on his fat as he goes down. peterson would come out and get carted off with an ankle injury. he would not return. 7-3, minnesota in the second quarter. carson palmer throws a jump ball for chaz schilling. michael bush goes in. 17-7. bush, 109 yards on 37 carries. darrius heyward-bey was hauled off on a stretcher but he was able to make the plane trip home. raider lead, just six points. you've got to put them away. ponder looking for percy harvin on fourth down. the pass broken up by tye von branch. that would do it. oakland goes to 6-4. they have a one-game lead in the afc west. >> last week you said the win tasted like fried chicken. what does this taste like? >> all of them taste like chicken. they feel real good. we struggled my first seven years. any time you can come into some there is body else's place and beat them, it feels real g. few raiders very strong on the road this year. stanford moved up to six in the latest bcs standings. they won the big game to keep the act down on the farm. >> it means a lot. it means a lot. it will mean more once the season is over, i'm sure. you get to reminisce, but i feel very grateful, two games in a row winning against them, retain the axe for another year. >> a crazy weekend in college football. four teams in the top 10 lost. stanford moves back up. that will change next week because top-ranked lsu will play number three arkansas on friday. stanford moves up to six in the bcs standings. nascar championship came down to two men, carl edwards and tony stewart. with 37 laps to go, stewart takes the lead. he and edwards finished tied in the standings but stewart takes it on the tiebreaker to claim his third champion ship and first as owner. that's a huge accomplishment if you can become an owner of your team and end up with a winning -- winning the nascar championship. and they need personality at the top of that circuit. this is going to be a great year for nascar, i think. he was beloved by the community he served for nearly two decades. vallejo comes together tonight to mourn the loss of a police officer killed in the line of duty. we'll see you back here in half an hour. until then, our updates are at cbssf.com. have a good night. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,
