withdrawing troops from syria, this is what precipitated jim mattis' resignation as the defense secretary. there was republican blowback then to that decision which ultimately was never really bore out in the near term. now this is a pretty striking condemnation from republicans in the senate to what the president is doing in syria. we're not seeing very many voices of support for the administration. there's certainly a lot of senators who have been silent on this issue, but very few who are supporting what the president is doing. >> charlie, i wanted to get your thoughts on all this. there are some that are questioning whether or not the domestic political calculation was something that weighed on the president's mind. last time he was considering something like this, he had jim mattis essentially resign over it. you had brett mcgurk as well resign over it. this time a lot of silence from those in the national security apparatus, if you will. >> you ought to expect it, as
