WBAL Today October 9, 2009

we re back now with more of today on a friday morning, 9th day of october 2009. just let s stop and take a grander at all the nice people who gathered in our plaza. huge crowd yes. despite some calls for rain today. holiday crowd. that s right. pre-columbus day crowd. right. not a bad group of people. and maybe some of these people here are preparing to get ambush makeovers. makeovers, yes, yes. that s right. that s going to happen later on. out on the plaza, i m matt lauer with al roker and natalie morales. later this half hour, it s an open house. we re talking real estate here from texas to connecticut to the heart of the midwest. we ll show you what your money can buy these days. some cases you want to spend $500,000 or less, in some cases, very much less. we ll take you on a real estate tour in a couple minutes. nice little kitchen on that house. also ahead, bouncing back. you know we all go through setbacks in life, whether you know, people have lost their jobs or are going through, of course, this economic recovery and economic uncertainty. but everything from divorce to illness, it can sometimes seem overwhelming. so, coming up this morning, we re going to tell you six things you need to know to make you happy. well, one of those things would have to be paula deen. yes! everybody gets happy with paula deen. yes. everybody loves paula deen. who doesn t love paula deen? and coffee cake. that s right. we re combining two of our favorites. ms. paula has got a nontraditional coffee cake that she s going to show you how to make so you can bring to your dinner party this weekend. sounds good. oh, she s eating it now! is that dough? i hope that s not raw dough, was it? was that raw dough, paula? no. yes. she might not be around for this segment, actually. let s go inside. ann s got a check of the headlines. good morning to you. good morning to you, matt. good morning, everybody. at 6:00 a.m. eastern time today, president obama was awakened with the news that he has won the 2009 noble peace prize. the announcement, which stunned even the white house, was made in norway. the prize committee said that its choice was unanimous and based on what it called mr. obama s extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and rid the world of nuclear weapons. pakistan s interior minister is now vowing an all-out offensive against the taliban in pakistan, this after a terror attack today, the country s worst in six months. a suicide bomber struck this morning near a crowded market in peshawar. hospital officials counted at least 49 fatalities and more than 100 people wounded. the second typhoon in two weeks has brought more misery to the philippines. flooding and mudslides there have claimed at least 160 lives. more rain is expected today from texas to ohio. flash flooding on thursday stranded drivers in missouri, kansas and in illinois. and one farmer was killed by a lightning strike. a scary moment last night after a hockey game in st. louis. a crowded escalator sped up and the bottom stairs collapsed, injuring 13 people. confirmed the presence of water. the second spacecraft, though not visible to most. nasa says it did in fact impact a huge explosion. filmmaker steven spielberg has won three oscars but says he was truly honored by the award he received last night in philadelphia. spielberg was given the national constitution center s liberty medal, presented by forrer president bill clinton. philadelphia s mayor called spielberg a global ambassador of hope. it is now three minutes past the hour. it s time to get another check of the weather from al. thanks a lot, ann. as we look and show you what s happening for today and the weekend, we ve got extensive flooding today, going from texas all the way into ohio, flood warnings, flash flood watches and flood watches. also the risk of strong storms and isolated tornadoes from brownsville to lexington, kentucky. as you look at that rain moving, it s marching along from texas on into the northeast. rainfall amounts generally about one to two inches, but we ve got three to four inches of rain falling anywhere from corpus christi on into memphis, fairly decent friday on tap for a desperate 30% chance for off-and-on rainshowers. mild brick house now on to today s real estate and what you can get for $200,000 to $500,000. from bungalow to english manors, we have something for everyone. today contributor and brick house barbara corcoran is here for an open house. good to see you again. good morning, al. first of all, interesting news in that mortgage rates are down to 8.47%. people saying historic record lows? is this pushing up mortgage applications? well, actually, it s down over one-tenth of a point as opposed to a week ago, so a bit overplayed by the banks, i believe, but it s a big it s a little piece of good news after a lot of other good news out there. so it makes people feel more optimistic. so, for that, it s good. okay, so for people in a buying mood, we have good houses to show them. first of all, we re going to round rock, texas. okay. take a look. we have $375,000 for this neat house. and this is only 25 minutes from austin. it s a big, brick house, as you like to say. it has 3,500 square feet and it s perfect for impressing your friends, a boss. now, that right there wow! is your own putting green. it not only has that, it has a fountain and a big patio area out back and you have a huge yard. that s a fancy kind of house. and a low cost of living there? oh, yeah. very low cost of living. right here, you can probably live for 15% cheaper than anywhere else in the country. so that house you get for that amount of money is bigger here than almost anywhere else in the country. the house has open floors, open floor plan, huge windows throughout. the columns there, that s a spare room. a lot of people would love that as a living room. it has a kitchen with a pantry. that s the master bedroom. and look at the beautiful shrubbery outside that window. it has a separate family room with the hardwood floors, the fireplace, wall-to-wall windows. that s the master bath. that s your own little pool room. just spare room to play pool. it s got everything. come on. this house is a stunner and it s in mint, mint condition. all right. we re going to head to the pacific northwest now, springfield, oregon, and $275,000. and springfield is only ten minutes from eugene and it s, of course, the home to the university of oregon. that is a very contemporary home, and it s in a quiet, wooded neighborhood. but you think you re miles from the center of town. you re really not. it s very close to town. it s got that beautiful, big deck out front that, frankly, needs a little furniture, in my opinion, would make it look a little bit more welcoming. it s been staged for sale, meaning they ve rented all this furniture you re seeing throughout the house to make the house look more attractive. is that a good idea? it s a great idea because nobody likes an empty house. it makes it feel smaller. it smacks of the message that the seller is desperate to sell. you don t want to put a house on the market if it s empty. staging is a great idea. there s the master bath there. the master bedroom suite is upstairs, very private, spacious, it has trav teen counters. the whole house is a pretty, pretty house. now south to montgomery, alabama. another beauty, talking $495,000. and it s at the state capitol, of course, and you know that this particular city gets half its beauty because it s right on the alabama river. this is 4,400 square feet big. it s an english manor style house, very impressive. look at that beautiful cobblestone courtyard out front. most people call it a driveway. when it s that big, you call it a courtyard, okay? original molding, brass chandeliers, a separate den, a library. that s the library you re looking at right there. it s an impressive living room, beautifully furnished, stone floor, built-in bookcases, gorgeous fireplaces, wall-to-wall windows. that s one of the children s rooms, and each room is entirely spacious. it has french doors that lead from the back patio into the kitchen. that is a beautiful den there. and look at the size of those beautiful trees. that adds tremendous value to any home, when you have mature trees like that. almost looks like an estate. it looks like old money. let me tell you, people pay extra if they have new money for a house that looks like old money. all right. good to know. okay. now, let s head to missouri, just outside of st. louis. university city. this house is going for $305,000. and this is a close suburb of st. louis. it s only 15 minutes away. and don t judge this house by its cover. you would swear that s a little house. oh, yeah, absolutely. wait until you get inside. it s much bigger than it looks. it s a classic dutch colonial home. they always look smaller on the outside, but once you re in, you see what it looks like. that s the large, spacious living room, the stairwell going upstairs, an adjacent kitchen, nice and open, the kind of floor plan families love today. all the windows are new, the floors are new. everything about this house is in toothbrush move-in condition. it has a second floor that has three big bedrooms, an extra large vaulted bath with slate tiles, double skylights. that s one of the master bedrooms. there are actually two, and there s the other one. and in the back, there s a patio and a fenced backyard. there s the beautiful master bathroom. beautiful master bath. brand new. and one more play, litchfield, connecticut. you want it get them all in. people like litchfield because of the stone walls and old trees and it s a frindly community. this is a vintage posted beam colonial home in turn-key condition. when you look inside, the master bedroom has vaulted posts. i m talking fast now. this living room has a fireplace. missed a chair in the living room. okay, that s part of the kitchen, but it s really only the breakfast room. a den there with a beautiful red couch, okay, and the kitchen. and i think we ve done it, right? that s right. one more, sherwood, wisconsin whoa, you are greedi iny tod yes. shorewood is ten minutes from milwaukee, hometown of ritchie cunningham and the fonz from happy days. so, this is a happy house in a happy town and everyone loves this house because it s everyone s idea of a sweet little house with all the bells and whistles that you want in a darling little house. and we did it! barbara corcoran, nobody s better than you. have a great weekend. thank you, al. coming up next, how to find happiness, especially in trying times. then later on, shape up like a hollywood star. one of the hottest trainers spills his secrets. this morning on today s woman, how to smile through the toughest of times, whether you ve lost your job or much worse, someone you love, being sad or angry can negatively affect both your physical and mental wellbeing. the current issue of body & soul magazine has tips on finding happiness. dale atkins wrote sanity savers: tips for women to live a balanced life. good morning. good morning. we have to begin with the respect. if you feel bad because of any of the things i just listed, you are feeling normal. this is completely normal. you ve got to respect that those feelings are very intense and very real. but there is, you think, a way to find peace, a less stress, even when everything feels like it s falling around you, terry. absolutely. i think there s a few, to push off the bottom a little. yes. and one thing you say and this may be the hardest thing for people to accept you say accept change. change can be good. but how do you tell somebody who just lost their mother or father, just lost their job, that change is good? well, you can t say, perk up, it will get better! you don t want to say that. the change is well, like my mother says, there is nothing constant in the world but change. so you don t ever come out of it saying you need to turn around, you need to feel better, right? yeah. i think what we have to do is understand that life is about change. that s what it is, and it s all about resiliency and adaptability, but unless you recognize that the change often comes with and is really it s really about loss. how you say good-bye to that which was and then integrate what happened and then go forward. you have to mourn it. yes. that s so important to the process. and realize and tell yourself that it s going to be okay. sort of be like that oak tree in the wind storm. that s, i think, the way you have to sort of look at change. and one of the ideas is to worry well. now, we re all going to worry. what does worry well mean? worry well, the key there is to distinguish between productive worry and unproductive worry. you know, when you get caught in this circuit of worry and you just keep going around and around and around, you re not moving yourself forward at all. so, the way to do that is to figure out which worry comes with an action you can take, so that if you re worried about something, can you do something about that worry? if you can t, it s sort of pointless, right? it s pointless and it s destructive, self-destructive. and one of the other things you can do is, how did i get through something awful before? what strategies did i use? what do i have internally that i can go to? and the difficult issue with worrying badly is that you only you keep going down into this terrible cycle and you re not moving forward, you re not thinking of new ideas of how to approach something. you talk about instead of going in with worry, practicing expansion going out with maybe being more physical? yes, right. more reaching out to your family and friends? is that what that means? practicing expansion is an important thing. it works on a physical and mental level. when we hear bad news when bad times come, we tend to hunker down and constrict and contract, and you stay in a sort of par littic state. so, one way to do this is physically practice taking up more space, taking deeper breaths, standing taller and then expandr your mind, looking at all of the onsions you have and not thinking i only have one option and that s it. really think of your way out of a situation. and in many ways, that way out is figured out by looking for the lesson, which makes a lot of sense. yes. we ve always been told to look for the lessons. but one of the tips in addition is to develop resilience. okay, honey girl, how do we do that? how do we develop resilience? because that really is the key. well, yes. well, two ways you create resilience are, one, learning to let the thoughts bounce a little bit. i mean, a lot of what has happened when you re mourning a situation, that has already happened. what makes it, you know, even worse, is our thoughts that keep kind of hammering us with negativity. so, one thing to do first is to say, what, if there were a higher purpose for this, what would it be? what have i learned? what can i get from it so it wasn t a waste of time, so it s not woe is me, but it s more like, what have i gained as a result of this? it may be a greater connection to family, friends, et cetera. the other thing is meditation. and i don t mean you have to run off to the himalayas and abandon your life, but literally taking a few minutes every day to just breathe and counter that thought circuit. and the reason that it s so important to do that is because the body has to rest, but the mind has to rest. and when we are constricted, we often shut down and we are not ready to be creative in solving problems. and when we do allow our minds to take a little vacation, what we do is we are open to new possibilities. and with the body, you know, you can really stretch, as terri said, and you can bend but not break. reach for things that are higher in your own mind. and you say things to yourself that you will succeed, that you will do well. and you also have to help other people. you have to understand that your job or your job loss, your own personal loss is about your life. but when you reach out and help other people in some way, you expand your horizon and you will feel better so that sometimes we don t reach out to others. we don t reach out to our friends, use our outer resources, our inner resources. but we must also help others and help to just change the world a little bit. i think that s absolutely key, because then you can almost put your own concerns, your mourning in perspective. in perspective. we have more tips at body & soul magazine. we ve run out of time. thank you so much for some good advice. there is much more i think to give on this. thank you. the wild, star-studded world of celebrity stylists is coming up, and bravo star rachel zoe will be stopping by to tell us all about it. the intention of lying is a movie by ricky gervais now going around the country, and our gene shalit weighs in. good morning and welcome to the critic s corner. imagine a place where no one s ever heard a lie because lying is unheard of. good morning, shelly. hi, mark. i realize more and more every day how overqualified i am for this position and how incompetent you are at yours. there is not even a word for it. very embarrassed i work here. hi. hi. hello. and you re very pretty. that only makes this worse. one and all say whatever they mean, so, have a nice day could become, i hope you get run over. i ve always hated you. you ve always? hated you. i ve never known that. yeah, a lot of people know it. everybody tells it like it is, embarrassing, insulting and always bogusly funny. any messages? well, i told everybody you re getting fired this week and they wouldn t have their calls returned, so nobody left any messages. even advertising tells the truth. one day, a mental and physical slouch played by ricky gervais startles himself in a bank when he gets cash by lying. how much are you going to be withdrawing today, sir? $800. says here that you only have $300. it seems our system has made a mistake. here you go. and here lies the crux of the invention of lying. this leads to a line of falsities that lead to success, and it seems fun, until word spreads that mark knows the details of the luxurious afterlife in heaven. masses mob his house to hear what they came here after. mark shows upholding revelations that he s written unlike moses tablets on the backs of two pizza boxes. huh? after that comic high point, the invention of lying runs out of invention and sputters to a flat finish. the world s going to end unless we have sex right now. do we have time to get to a motel or do we need to do it right here? but half the time it s clever fun, which isn t half bad. this is the greatest movie ever made. remember, the truth always lies in the critic s corner, and that s it for today. wow, pretty funny. i love ricky gervais. he seems incredibly talented. he is. you said he actually came up with the office ? quantity, quality, what s important? make it a daily thing, whether it s a walk or a flight of stairs. it doesn t only have to be with what you do in the gym, but i say five days a week for 25 minutes is a great start. lady gaga, those abs of her, killer, those are amazing. this here was at the vma awards. which, who could forget that performance? we worked out just before she went on stage. you did? why? confidence. confidence. body confidence. when you re wearing a costume like that, you need to feel good. what do you do with her? heather s going to show us how to get abs like that. the first thing is a basic crunch. everyone s seen this. let s start with a crunch. now, we can do things to ad variety without adding equipment and intensity. a reverse crunch, grab behind her head the legs. now she s doing the opposite. we can combine these into a double crunch. do them together, hands behind your head and now you re doing it in both ways. and he can do this on the bed, on the floor, on the carpet. and i always thought no matter how much crunches you do, it won t help with the definition. is it more about diet than exercise? you hit the nail on the head. it s not just about the ab exercises. it s mainly about eating the right foods and burning the fat on top of the abs. and if you re dancing a lot like lady gaga, that s going to help you, too. a lot, yes. now over here from the abs, we ve moved over to alicia keys yes. who you work out with as well, and she s got that incredible tone in her back, right? i think a back is really important to be strong and sexy, no matter what you re wearing. it s sort of the stability of your whole upper back and your whole torso. how you carry yourself, the posture. and she s at the piano a lot, too. and she s upright and looking regal. now we have a pullover. here we have sharon. sharon is working her wing muscles. you know, if you re wearing something that s strapless and want to make sure nothing is hanging out of the sides. this is a simple exercise. she s using a bar. it can be a broomstick, a pipe, dumbbells, whatever you ve got. something with a little weight, though. this has a little weight. this has a little weight, yes. reach back all the way. now she ll transition from this into a standing back row. underhand grip works the place behind the blades. this is an important exercise. a lot of us forget to work out the back. how important is it to keep that in perspective when working out? it s essential to prevent neck injuries, back injuries, and it s a natural chest lift, which men and women both like. thank you, sharon. now, over here, vanessa williams is a client of yours as well, and she is ageless, timeless, gorgeous. what are her secrets? classiest woman in the world, okay? and she has the arms to go with it. yes. this is a stone crusher or a barbell tricep extension. you can do thez with dumbbells, barbells. simple exercise. bring the bar down to the forehead, back up again. transition to a bar curl. arms down all the way. by the way, this woman has two children. i don t know where they came from yes, but she s a runner, too, though, so that helps. that helps, yes. yes. great. over here, legs. we ve got legs. jessica simpson certainly has the legs. you work out with her a lot. yep. how does she get those legs? jessica looks great in the cut-off jean shorts. this is one of our favorite exercises. this is a step-over. you don t necessarily need a bench. it can be a piano table, anything, a milk carton. up and over. like a nice, high curb. exactly. transitioning into a dead lift. we re going to grab the bars. one hand under, one hand over. just having like a long bar is probably a good piece of equipment if you were going to make an investment, right? absolutely. this one i designed for my clients, but you can get a pipe at a hardware store. that s great. harley pasternak, ladies, thank you for working out for us. work out for me while you re at it. thank you. coming up next, the team wedded to perfection, a low-cost, high-impact party table. every week on tlc s wedded to perfection, wedding planners extraordinaire, the husband-and-wife team of josh brooks and june lee take us behind the scenes to show us how they turn events into spectacles, and that is one definitely there. and we ve got them this morning. good morning. good morning, ann. here s the thing, a lot of us don t want to spend a lot of money, but we also want to make a big splash. what s your best advice on how to get started? well, i think we have a table presentation here, and it talks about high-impact, low-cost, because we all want that. we all want as much as we can for our dollars today, especially. okay, let s look at this table, because this table definitely has high-impact. you guys have done some really extraordinary i mean, the idea that you would put these huge, huge leaves really makes me come to this table and think, wow, this is something something big is going to happen here. right. to me, what s really fantastic about this, each one of these leaves only cost about $5, and anybody can just put them in a tall vase. it s tall, it s slender, and you only need three to four. so, that s between $15 to $20 for a big impact like that. i think that s phenomenal. and what s really also cool is because this is glass, josh, you can be able to see your friends. it s not like you re being blocked from them. right. you can see through it. we also like to place them between the seats so it doesn t block the view. another important part, we like to use rectangular tables because the goal is to try to keep people as close together. so if you re sitting here, you can actually have a conversation with five to six different people as opposed to being limited just to the person to your left or right. i m just trying to break it down, because first of all, i m thinking, wow, something great is going to happen here, but you ve also mixed and matched in terms of the dishes. i noticed that this place setting over here looks different from this one, looks different from that one. so, what s the thinking behind this variation? even though you ve maintained color themes. exactly. to me, even at weddings, i want it to feel like people s dinner parties. so, it shouldn t feel like all matchy-match, and i think it s more interesting when you can mix and match. so, it s not just the plates, it s the stemware, the flower. the ribbon is incredibly affordable. buy the ribbon and tie it around a napkin and that makes it special. exactly. not everybody have a full set of 12 that s matching. things break. so here it s much more forgiving, but also interesting. but you also created symmetry, because you didn t do it hodgy podgy. exactly. what s your best advice on that, josh? in terms of sympathy? yeah. you don t want it to look so eclectic, like you threw things down. but yet, when things are different, it keeps the table look really interesting, and it actually stays interesting for a longer time because you keep picking up different details throughout the dinner, so. speaking of details, i m going to step over here, because this is interesting. you have these electric candles out of here. i ll get out of the way. it s pretty cool. these are i mean, we did this before and we get such a high response from it. it s basically a mirror with candles, two of my favorite things. so, when i put it together, i went crazy for them. and what s nice about it is, although you only have 12 tiny little tea lights, it looks like you ve got thousands and i love the high-impact and drama of that. this is a great table for having a great conversation. would we have spent a lot of money on this?
