year. thanks so much for being here with us. i'm pamela brown. today police locked down the hospital in montgomery county after a worker was killed inside the facility. the hospital is back open, but the killer is still on the loose at this hour. our sam ford has been following the story. he joins us at suburban hospital with the latest. sam. >> pamela, police say they are looking for a suspect, but they will say no more than that. the unthinkable happened today. someone was killed inside of a hospital. for four hours today, suburban hospital in bethesda was an active crime scene. the site of dozens police vehicles, the hospital on lockdown and officers searching we're told every room on every floor for a murderer. >> they found a 40-year-old male employee of the hospital who had been assaulted, received trauma to the upper body. >> initial communications from police and fire sources referred to a stabbing in the boiler room, but these spokespersons would not confirm those details. >> he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> many hospital visitors and walk-in emergency room patients were turned away. inside, one couple from texas who had a 6-month-old baby checked out were allowed to leave. >> nobody told us why. we had to show our i.d.'s. >> how long were you there? >> we stayed an extra hour. >> it seemed frustrating for me would-be visitors that a killer might be loose inside. police say the suspect escaped. >> we do want to make sure that the community knows that no one is in danger inside the hospital. the incident was over by the time officers arrived. no one else was in danger at the hospital. >> a stunning tragedy that the first apparent murder of the year occurred inside a hospital. the victim's body has been taken to baltimore for an autopsy. and the lockdown was rough on a number of the visitors trying to get in. one mother said her mother was -- woman said her mother was dying in the hospital but she couldn't get in. as for the 40-year-old male victim who was killed at work, police say they may release his name tomorrow. reporting live from the montgomery county mobile newsroom, sam ford, abc 7 news. >> oak, thanks, sam. -- ok, thanks, sam. following new developments in the evacuation of the u.s. capitol building. pilot error led to a plane losing radio contact and flying into restricted air space. officials say the pilot of piedmont airlines accidentally turned the radio to the wrong frequency. fighter jets were scrambled from andrews air force base while they determined what was happening. radio contact was reestablished and the flight landed safely at reagan national airport. a fatal accident caused some delays this morning on i-95. this happened around 8:30 this morning on i-95 northbound in beltsville. the driver somehow lost control of the car, struck a light pole which caused the car to split in half. the male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. maryland state police are investigating. in prince george's county, a man is killed in a morning fire and authorities are investigating what sparked the blaze. richard reeve is live with more. what a sad story. >> it certainly is, pam. fire investigators have been combing through that building trying to figure out what caused the blaze. the man who died was found in an area where there was not a lot of physical damage. >> it's just devastating. >> this home is now only a gutted shell. the remains of a fierce fire that fatally injured one man and left eight other people homeless. firefighters called here around 5:30 saturday morning found the building in flames fully involved, but inside on the second floor, fire crews discovered a man in critical condition who later died at the hospital. >> i feel bad because i knew them for a long time. >> the victim who worked as a maintenance man or handy man is well known in the neighborhood. >> just to know that i might have been the last person that actually saw him alive. >> he visited with ruth blackwell on new year's eve about 10:30 p.m. >> his room was one of the rooms that actually were not touched that well, so i don't understand how he managed to not escape. >> there is no official cause for the fire. neighbors suspect the man may have died from smoke inhalation. >> we don't know for sure. investigators are checking to see if there was an active smoker in the house. >> those who did survive are looking for undamaged items. investigators are trying to find out what started this deadly blaze. >> anytime it's a shame that there is a fire and people lose their lives. we lose too many of them. >> firefighters returned to the neighborhood today to check smoke detectors in the area and talk about fire safety with some of the residents. still no identification on this deceased man. authorities are looking for an official cause of this fire. richard reeve, abc 7 news. >> richard, thanks for that report. a new law is in effect in montgomery county. it's called the equal benefits law. starting today, contractors and subcontractors must provide the same benefits to a worker with a same-sex partner that they would provide to a workers spouse. if it can't be provided, the employer must give a cashier equivalent. and also you will have to pay an extra 25 cents at the main toll plazzyeavement it's part of a three-year schedule. the toll will go up in 2012. toll rates remain at 75 cents and the money goes toward the dulles metro extension. 9 deadly twisters have claimed yet another life. the death toll raised to seven people killed in two different states. a woman died from her injuries this morning. meanwhile the cleanup from the devastating tornadoes continues. >> video posted on youtube caught one tornado as it struck fort lenard wood, missouri, across the region, the new year begins in misery for many who must pull together the misery of their lives. >> not much can you do with mother nature's fury. >> dozens of tornado crashed the holiday in five states spreading death and destruction. >> the house started shaking. the windows busted out and it was gone. >> the freak storm took residents by surprise with little time forewarning or escape. ominous clouds bore witness to the approaching twister. then sirens wailed the warning. this woman and her young son barely got out alive. >> there was some boards laying on top of us. i somehow managed to get them off of me and screamed out for help from my neighbors. >> three people were killed in this spark arkansas town of cincinnati. >> i started looking for the other people that were missing and we found everybody. unfortunately, it was not a good deal. >> the tornadoes fueled by warm air very unusual for this time of year touched down from arkansas all across southern missouri and up to southern and central illinois. elsewhere stormy weather continues. >> get out of the way! >> it caused a 20-car pile-up in colorado springs made for dangerous driving on iowa's roads. they're digging out of mountains of mud instead of snow in california. there is more rain on the way. >> we're having needless to say much calmer weather here relatively warm day today. we could be in for some changes. steve rudin has more. >> changes are on the way. the showers have started across most of the area, not really going to add up to a whole lot. the pack or the punch with this cold front really going to diminish over the next several hours. we're not looking for any severe weather. doppler radar shows moderate showers in prince george's county adds we head off to expand the view, we do have showers in the forecast for the remainder of the evening into the overnight hours. temperatures well above average, 45 to 55 degrees for the evening hours will eventually fall into the upper 30's to lower to middle 40's. coming up, we have a change in the forecast, cooler air on the way. breezy conditions to start the upcoming work and school week. >> back to reality, steve, thanks so much for that. well, a lot of people hoping to be an instant millionaire are disappointed today. no one matched all of those numbers in last night's mega millions drawing. the jackpot was worth $242 million. you have a chance to strike it rich still. the jackpot is now $290 million. the next drawing is tuesday, january 4. and still ahead on abc 7 news at 6:00, new year's resolutions, one of the most popular ones to get in shape. we head to a local gym today. we have an update tonight on that midair collision in virginia. and a busy day in politics as several governors are sworn in across the country. stay with us. those stories are just ahea >> nearly two dozen people are dead after a deadly car bombing outside a church in egypt. it happened just as worshippers were leaving a new year's mass in the city of alexandria. they say al qaeda is to blame, but so far no one has claimed responsibility. president obama condemned the attack and says those responsible must be brought to justice. russia is investigating a deadly plane accident. emergency workers say a passenger's plane engine caught fire as the jet taxied down a snowy runway in siberia. it exploded and three people were killed. 43 others were hurt. most of the passengers were able to evacuate the plane before the explosion occurred. and we know now the identities of two people killed in a midair collision in virginia. their names are jacob kaiser and adjacent long. both men were from virginia. they were riding a small cesna when they collided with a helicopter. no one on the helicopter was hurt. federal and state investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash. all the new year, means a change in leadership. earlier today, three new governors were sworn in, democrat andrew cuomo becomes new york's 56th governor. and republican rick snyder is now michigan's 48th governor. he succeeds the democrat and in new mexico, republican susan martinez becomes the state's 27th governor and its first female chief executive. she succeeds bill richardsonson. still ahead right here on abc 7 news, are you hoping to lose wait in the new year? we have tips from a physical trainer up next? plus mild today, but temperatures are going to drop again. steve rudin is back >> welcome back, everybody. well, one of the biggest parties of the year also involved one of the biggest cleanups of the year. of course, we're talking about the celebration in times square last night. despite lingering snow in new york city, about a million showed up to ring in the new year. as you can see right there, a lot of trash was left behind. workers had to clean up about 40 tons of confetti, party favors and other garbage, they used 20 mechanical sweepers, 21 collection trucks and 3,000 leaf blowers to get the job done. loose wait and exercise month, that's a resolution that many people make. some folks jump on that. they were at the gym early this morning. this one opened its doors at 6:00 a.m. this personal trainer says that getting in shape and staying thin is a doable goal. >> the number on the scale and result physically, focus on the fact that you are keeping the commitment. this is a life-type-time change. if you focus on working out for a couple of weeks, you're not going to really be able to maintain the goal. >> this trainer says if you encounter setbacks in your goals and diet, don't get discouraged and give up. the first baby of 2011 was born at shady grove. rose anna santos was born at 12:01 this morning. mom and baby are doing well, we're told. she will join her two other brothers at home soon and the family will receive a special gift from the hospital for having the first baby born this year. >> exciting. >> yes. >> we're kicking off the new year on a good note here weatherwise. >> mild temperatures. normally we see these temperatures in the middle of march. go figure. something is up there. it's a little murky outside. showers are starting to move in from the west. this is all part of a cold front. the wind beginning to pick up also. look at the flag blowing. wind is out of the south for the most part and they'll continue to increase jason bit as the frontal system moves on through. here it is. this is our weatherbug network, 41 degrees in cumberland, maryland. we have current temperature of 57, wakefield high school in arlington after a high of 58 degrees. and the it's 56 downtown at george washington university. they had a high today of 57 degrees. the cold front has yet to move through. it will over the next couple of hours. look at these daytime highs, 50 at the airport. normally we see a high temperature of 43 degrees, the record low, 14 below back in 1881. so an old record continues so stand. winds beginning to pick up out of the south at 12 miles per hour. we have showers across the area right now. 52 at reagan national airport, 55 for dulles. 44 in hagerstown. this is the colt front off to the west of us. there is a wide range of temperatures. 18 degrees this hour, chicago, sioux saint marie at 19, compare that to temperatures in the 50. wilmington is looking at 62 degrees this hour. satellite and radar, the cold front really beginning to fall apart. all of the nasty weather we had yesterday, the tornadoes in missouri and arkansas, this all part of the same system, but it's falling apart as we speak. we are going to look for the showers to stick around for the overnight hours into early tomorrow morning. take a look at doppler radar. head in just a bit closer, look at light showers at this time. we had a moderate shower pass through alexandria and now into oxen hill, maryland. the showers will continue for the next several hours, possibly a .1 to a quarter inch of rain by all is said and done. not a big rainmaker, but every that falls from the sky will definitely fall in the form of rain because temperatures are just way too warm for any snow. here is the futurecast. notice how quickly everything clears out of here. sunday afternoon, high pressure settleles back across the mid-atlantic. that means sunshine, winds are out of the northwest and cooler air will funnel into the region. clear skies, high pressure will stick around for several days. we want to look for a very quiet weather pattern as we head into the upcoming work and school week. temperatures nont, 30's and 40's. showers will end tomorrow morning. look for high temperatures around 57 to 52 degrees. so cooler compared to today. there is the bigger cooldown on the way, tuesday, wednesday, and thursday, highs just around 40 degrees. that is slightly below average for this time of year, but what a way to ring in the new year. temperatures in the upper 50's. >> we will take it. enjoy it while it lasts. >> last time we were this warm, december 1. >> really? >> it's been a long time. >> i know. both ends of the spectrum in the month of december, is that right, my goodness. thanks, steve. we have a big game coming up that the caps fans are excited about. >> getting ready in pittsburgh. it's time to bowl on new year's day, ladies and gentlemen, two powerhouses and a coaching legend in the outback bowl. it turned out to be one whale of a game. we'll have highlights and the rest >> capitals all set in pittsburgh waiting for game-time. the caps take on the pens at 8:00 on the first nighttime outdoor game in nhl history. they moved the rain until 8:00 because of rain in pittsburgh. alexander ovechkin likes the change in time. the guys can rest up after last night's new year's celebration. ovechkin is a goal scoring slump. that guy right there, sidney crosby just ended a 25-game point scoring streak. >> in the end it's about two points. let's not make no mistake. we're all people that want the game of hockey to grow and this is a big deal. to be part of this is very lucky and in five years, year going to sit back and -- you're going to sit back and whenever you're in one of these things again, it's a great thing. if we can help build hockey in the u.s. and canada and all over the world by putting on a great show for these people, it's more than
