karen rogers. she's got accuweather. matt pelman is taking a look at your traffic. good morning. >> good morning. storm tracker6 live double scan showing some of us waking up with a few light showers. we're seeing it predominantly north and west of the city so if you're nearly a town, near pottsville out to the northwest you're getting a bit damp on 222. in reading you're basically dry now, maybe a sprinkle along 422. 322 in chester county a sprinkle and the 30 bypass you're fine near coatesville out near lancaster you've got a sprinkle out there. so, we're going see a sprinkle through the early morning hours and that's about it. the rest of the day it's dry but lots of clouds and you see he that here on satellite six and action radar but even those clouds will break for a little sunshine later on. it's cool to start you off. 54 in quakertown, 59 in pottstown, 58 this morning in kennett square and saint davids. 64, though n-center city right now. in some of the suburbs in new jersey, just 61 in browns mills and hammonton, 62 in glassboro near rowan university. 62 degrees in dover, delaware looking at the school forecast as you're getting up getting going out there, early this morning at 7:00 a.m., 63 degrees. we'll have a cloudy start and we'll watch for a sprinkle, maybe send the kids with a little hoodie. by noon 70 degrees. we'll be dry at that point with mostly cloudy skies and then by 4:00 p.m., 74 as they're coming home from the bus. the high today will be 76 degrees. temperatures right about average. it changes a little bit tomorrow. details in that seven-day forecast coming up, matt. >> all right, karen, hopefully it gets these sprinkles out of its system before we head towards the weekend. a couple damp roadways but for the most part things are dry. as we look live in center city along the vine street expressway plenty of headlights coming right for me and right for the schuylkill expressway. they're moving along okay with no overnight construction. nearby, of course, the ben franklin parkway remains closed both ways both drives. that's going to be closed through early next week because of the papal visit. this is 95 southbound side entering the work zone at cottman avenue. no problems so far this morning. unlike yesterday morning looks like a better ride at least at this point. still have a crash in lower moreland along terwood road at inverness lane. our construction on the ramp connecting the turnpike with fort washington has cleared. for the next half hour the left and send lanes are closed on 295. in ocean county the down polled blocking the northbound lanes at nine are gone so go ahead and use it. tam. >> thank you, matt. developing overnight a firefighter in montgomery county is in the hospital this morning after being injured on the job. crews are battling a blaze on the 100 block of south chestnut street in lansdale. when the firefighter was burned. so far no word on what kicked off those flames but we are being told the firefighter is expected to be okay. >> ♪ in just a few hours pilgrims from around world will gather right here in philadelphia. they'll spend the rest of the week coming together to celebrate the family and of course the highlight is the when the pope joins their number. let's go on over to "action news" reporter katherine scott. she's live outside the basilica of saints peter and paul. she's got the latest details. good morning, katherine. >> reporter: good morning, tam it's a big day after all the work, months and months of work putting the world meeting of families together. it now starts today at the convention center and one of the many stops the pilgrims will be making is here next to the basilica. this art installation which was set up to celebrate the world meeting of families. people can write their hopes and prayers on ribbons and tie them up next to thousands of others. the dome of the basilica of saint peter's and paul was lit up with moving images a new exhibit unveiled last night ahead of the world meeting of families which begins today. people are checking into hotels across the city excited for the week ahead. >> we left columbus about 8:45 this morning and we got here just now. >> reporter: it's been a whirlwinds of preparations at the convention center. 20,000 are expected this week but by this weekend, that could grow to one and a half million. over in fairmount, the start of the security fencing is going up along the perimeter of the francis festival grounds. crews were out last night installing chain link barriers at 25th and pennsylvania. many have waited months for this event and now the time has finally arrived. >> when i first registered, i didn't know the pope was coming. that was an added-on bonus later. >> we're here with some of our sisters from my convent and some of our other sisters from the local convents around philadelphia. >> reporter: and back here live at the knotted grotto where people have written their prayers, their intentions on ribbons and tied them up here outside the basilica. they're in all different languages. certainly more to come in the coming days. more than 18,000 people have signed up for the world meeting of families and it makes it the most attended ever and the opening ceremony takes place this afternoon at the convention center. we're live at the basilica, katherine scott, channel6 "action news." nydia and tam. >> katherine thank you. for the first time pope francis will step foot in the united states soon. he arrives in washington, d.c. later today. >> so exciting. but before his historic trip here pope francis toured more of cuba and took some time to preach positivity. >> "action news" reporter erin o'hearn is at the big board with details. good morning, erin. >> reporter: good morning. the anticipation and excitement continues to build as pope francis ends his visit to cuba today with a mass before flying to washington for the start of his u.s. tour. francis' four day trip focused on encouraging reconciliation within families and between the u.s. and cuba. he worked behind the scenes as a mediator in 18 months of secret talks on reestablishing diplomatic relations between the two nations. meanwhile washington, d.c. and new york city are busy he as is philadelphia prepping for the arrival of the pope with very tight security. this afternoon he will be welcomed by president obama and the first lady. while in the nation's capitol his holiness will also be the first pope to address a joint meeting of congress. the pope will then head to new york city before visiting philadelphia and many believe the message he is spreading transcends the catholic church. >> he wants his message to be heard by everybody. he wants -- and that message is not a message of doctrine or something like that, it's a message of love and the love of christ. >> francis has appeared to be in some discomfort walking. he's been needing extra help getting up and down stairs. the pontiff suffers from sciatica and has a bad knee. well, of course after his stops in washington and new york pope francis arrives in philadelphia on saturday morning. we're in the final countdown, tam. >> hard to believe erin. exciting that's here. "action news" of course is following pope francis for his entire u.s. journey this week from washington to new york and then of course on here to philadelphia beginning at noon today, rick williams and monica malpass will be reporting live from the nation's capitol and then eva pilgrim and sarah bloomquist will be live in new york city starting tomorrow. >> today is the last day of school for kids in philadelphia for the next week. philadelphia schools announced last night that schools will be closed monday because of the pope. the decision also means spring break will be shortened. classes will now be held monday march 21st as a makeup day. the jewish holiday is tomorrow and schools were already closed thursday and friday, so students will now be out for a full week. and you can count on the entire "action news" team for coverage of the papal visit. our team of more than two dozen anchors and reporters will be staked out at locations all across the region as we bring you history in the making as it happens live. we invite you to join us. >> all right. now let's take a look at what we can expect from accuweather. little bit warmer today. >> yeah, its not so bad. 76 degrees today's temperatures right about average and it gets better for tomorrow. let's take a look right now at storm tracker6 live double scan around the region and you can see he we have some showers out in the northwest. they've already been breaking apart a little bit. i want to go in a little close are with double scan. you'll get a better sense of this. on 309 north of allentown a bit wet there but on 222 just a spotty sprinkle. you're basically dry in reading, maybe a sprinkle and along 322 you can see a sprinkle out towards lancaster as you head closer towards coatesville and malvern, you're basically dry right there so for now the sprinkles are north and west of the cit city. any of of us o could see a stray sprinkle through the early morning hours. we've got lots of clouds out and about looking at the center city skyline. no worries. we'll see some of that sunshine coming through a little bit later in the day. 65 degrees currently in the city but a lot cooler in some of the suburbs and we've brought in our always on day planner to kind of help you map out your day ahead. the dewpoint 52 degrees, the winds out of the east-northeast pretty light, 9 miles an hour, bit of a breeze and the barometric pressure holding steady now. satellite6 and action radar showing lots of clouds. those clouds still in place. it's going to be a day kind of similar to yesterday with the cloud cover especially early on. we see those showers out to the north and west and you can see how they're kind of lifting up to the north so it's not as if they're sweeping through philadelphia and the coastline, so predominantly the showers to the north and west early this morning. future tracker6 showing by 7:00 in the morning still a shower around the poconos, maybe near reading and allentown. maybe a sprinkle elsewhere. this model showing one a little bit on the coastline as well. look at 9 o'clock in the morning and then beyond that we start to see the clouds break a little bit by the afternoon hours at 4 o'clock, we're seeing breaks of sunshine out there, especially to the northwest and the sunshine will build a little bit as the day ends unfortunately. but setting us up for an okay couple of days. 76 for your high today. by 8:00 a.m., it's 63 with a sprinkle. by 11:00 a.m., dry but mostly cloudy and 69. by 2:00 p.m., 75 degrees and by 5:00 p.m. coming down from that high and 74 with some more sunshine at day's end. looking to your wednesday, even though he fall arrives at 4:21, it's going to be a bit warmer with 80 degrees for your high. and then this area of high pressure, a pretty strong area of high pressure comes in for the weekend and that's going to help us for the papal visit because we are watching an area of low pressure down to the south that would bring us some rain but it looks like at this point the high pressure going to win out. so, lots of clouds. today yom kippur begins at sundown, 76 degrees for your high. fall arrives in the early morning hours and it's sunny and a bit warmer, 80 degrees for your high. thursday still nice, 81. friday partly sunny, 77. saturday a bit cooler and 73. at this point looks like clouds and sun. we've been mentioning we're going to watch that area of low pressure down to the south. at this point looks dry. sunday with clouds and sun and 72, so a bit cool. monday mostly sunny skies, it gets a bit better, the temperatures start to climb up a little bit and 75 degrees for your high. association as we look at the seven-day forecast, we're seeing a lot of those 70's unlike how polluters keep releasing unlimited carbon pollution into the air. and took more than one million dollars from the polluters. tell senator toomey to vote for the clean power plan, because unlimited pollution shouldn't be a right. but playing outside should be. >> breaking news. a viewer shared cell phone video of a fire tearing apart a building in yeadon, delaware county this morning. the roof partially collapsed damaging businesses inside the building here on chester avenue. the extender of the damage is still being determined. peco is on scene dealing with downed wires. everyone is okay. happening on the route 13 trolley as a result of that fire in yeadon so a note on that. we want to take a break real quick from the papal coverage to talk about something fun. why am i on an elephant. today is elephant appreciation day. yeah, go to the meet some elephants when i was in thailand last year. one of my friends right there, she was great. so, i became a mahoot which was pretty exciting. today not only elephant appreciation day it's also white chocolate day, delicious, ice cream cone day, also delicious and world car free day. so, if you're choosing to go car free, good for you. thank you very much. that always helps me out. looks like as we come out of the suburbs this morning a few people are going car free. volume not bad at all here in delco along the blue route, 476, traffic coming southbound toward 95 is moving along just fine. now, elsewhere on 476 still have some construction on the northeast extension. they're working northbound between lansdale and quakertown taking out the left lane. and then between cake town and the lehigh valley interchange the right lane is blocked. so, a couple lanes blocked northbound. southbound, though, everything is opened. in lower moreland montgomery county still watching that crash along terwood road at inverness lane. east-west turnpike looks good at this point. if you're out and about in christiana don't forget today and each day until october 2nd the ramp from highway one northbound to 95 southbound closes. that starts at 6:00 in the morning and goes until 7:00 in the evening again through october 2nd. time for the is dead run over by a septa paratransit bus around dinnertime last night. police say muhammad sylla ran into the 1700 block of south 21st street in point breeze. surveillance video which we are not airing shows the child knocked down and then run over by the left fronts tire. the child died at chop. his father and another relative were just feet away frofrom the accident working on an suv. "action news" talked to a relative who witnessed the tragedy. >> i feel terrible right now 'cause it's -- you know, he was like bleeding real bad and then, you know, like -- i feel terrible. >> police say the bus driver stopped immediately and talked to investigators and at this point they say this appears to be an accident, no the a crim crime. >> ♪ and graphic video out of canada shows the moment a protester accidentally caught fire at a demonstration in ontario. it happened on sunday when members of the kettle first nation were celebrating a deal reached with the canadian government but some members didn't support the deal and set a fire. some of those in support of the deal tried to douse the flames. witnesses say a 61-year-old man who was against the deal tried to get it going again with some gasoline but instead he ended up catching fire himself. police say that his injuries are serious but that they are not life-threatening. >> new on "action news" there's some serious monkey business going on in nebraska. several counties are working together to capture these masked burglars. at least seven businesses including a tavern and a repair shop has been hit by these brazen bandits wearing monkey masks. the crimes usually happen in the early morning hours. >> 5:48 now. straight ahead the first star to be eliminated from "dancing with th"dancingwith the stars." >> plus a hungry rat tried to make off with a slice of pizza. karen. >> storm tracker6 live double scan showing that we've got a couple of sprinkles especially north and west of the city basically dry in philadelphia right now. what's in store for your day ahead?
