WRC Today July 10, 2010
good morning. welcome to today on a saturday. i m lester holt. and i m amy robach. so we went from 18,000 fans to about 18. 18 beloved fans outside now. i don t think we ll ever see anything quite like we saw yesterday. it was difficult getting in. a lot of the streets blocked off, but we had everything, we had sun, rain, and a tremendous performance. i can t remember the last time i ve had as much fun. everybody said such nice things about her behind the scenes, which is always good to hear. and she was such a trooper in the rain. in fact i think the rain actually made that last number. we ll tell you more about her performance later on, but there s a lot of news to get to. the cap on the bp oil well that s been in place for about five weeks now, it s far from perfect. the fit at least. and a great deal of the oil continues to flow. so today the company plans to lower a new and tighter fitting cap over the gushing well. and while bp says the heek could be completely contained pie monday, it s also preparing for potential problems. we ll have the details and the worsening impact on the seafood industry in a moment. then a spy drama plays out in a flashback to the cold war in an airport exchange, a swap of those who apparently spied for russia and the united states, new lives begun. we ll have details coming up. what a scene that was, two planes almost like out of a movie. plus, is sarah palin running for something? her new video feels very much like a campaign ad. we will hear how sappeals to th mama grizzlies. and miami got a real heat wave last night as lebron james made his miami heat debut. and they were greeted by 13,000 fans as teams that lost out to miami put their spin on the lebron sweep stakes. it got kind of nasty. it s a big deal in miami, they love it, but not so much in cleveland. they feel a real sense of betrayal. so we ll hear more about that later. but first the latest on the oil containment effort in the gulf. anne thompson is in venice, louisiana for us. good morning. reporter: good morning, lester. all attention will turn to 5,000 feet under the sea as bp begins a series of complicated maneuvers today that it hopes will help improve its ability to collect the oil and ultimately improve its chances to kill the well. the containment cap, an imperfect slupgs for five weeks, is being replaced. remotely operated vehicles will start removing it today to neighboring room for a better fitting cap that officials hope will collect as much as 80,000 barrels of oil a day. far more than what officials think is coming out now. that entire process once we start unbolting until we re in a position to put the new cap on could be three to four days. reporter: with you for those three or four days, most of the oil will flow into the gulf unimpeded, further tainting the waters that are life to seafood sellers. this i feel is what s helping me right now. psychologically and pocketbook. this is your life line? right. reporter: when the spill ended crabbing in st. bernard parish, he bought 600 new traps and worked lake pontchartrain. when you heard that there was oil in lake pontchartrain, did you think oh, my heart fell. what can you say in that s how we ve been surviving with the crabs. reporter: prices are up, almost $2 a pound on jumbo shrimp and business is down 40%. across the street, the seafood store is now just a shrimp store. oysters are too expensive. usually held run in the low 30s and the last time i checked it was over 50. just out of the ballpark for us. reporter: 70% of the sisters and slichl caught in the u.s. come from gulf waters contribute to go louisiana s $2.4 billion seafood industry. fishing bans have had a huge impact on restaurant menus and fish settlers around the nation. despite government testing and a state tracking system that identifies where the seafood is caught, some customers are altering their diets. usually i have oysters once a week and that s not going to happen. reporter: a fear per lon schaffer on working to calm. i m not going to sell something i would not eat. if i won t eat it, i m not going to sell it. i ll throw it away. reporter: now as for the argument between the government and the oil industry over the future of deep water drilling, one of the companies that owns a rig that s in the gulf says it s moving that rig out of the gulf all the way to egypt because of the uncertainty over the future of deep water drilling in the wake of the spill. lester? anne thompson, thank you. and now here s amy. and now to the remarkable spy drama that played out all day on friday between russia and the united states. a spy exchange that brought back memories of the cold war. mar continue fletcher has the story. reporter: a scene straight from the cold war, two planes nose to tail in a remote corner of the european air field. a spy swap, ten russian spies for four men who work for american and british intelligence. thursday night the russians deported from america after pleading guilty to acting as unregistered foreign agents. didn t have the drama of berlin s bridge of spies seen in so many dramatic swaps. but it wasn t another old time spy capital, vienna, 11:15 friday morning. a bus shuttled. quickly the ten entered the russian plane. among them vladimir and lydia who appear to be winning the american dream. their daughters, age 7 and 11, are expected to join them in russia. and anna chapman, who became the face of the spy ring. within 90 minutes, they head east. in return the four russians head west. intelligence analysts say there s no clear winner the swap. the americans and russians wanted the story to go away. they get their assets back, they re giving away some of the spies that they have already acquired information from. at the same time, the americans want more cooperation from the russians for iran, for nuclear proliferation. both sides win. both sides lose. reporter: three of the four men freed from russian jails were senior intelligence officers. among them an ex-colonel believed to be named roberts hanson whose secrets led to the deaths of top american agents. alsos freed, convicted of giving america secret information on nuclear submarines. after dropping off two of the men in london, the plane landed late yesterday at dulles airport outside washington. it s believed they ll be debriefed and then helped to set up new lives. it s too early for details an official told nbc news. this all happened rather quickly. martin fletcher, nbc news, london. we want to head over to the news desk now where melissa francis has more of the morning headlines. good morning, we begin in laredo, texas where they are bracing for the rio grande to crest agai this as they assess the damage after days of heavy rains and flooding. the river is now expected to crest at 55 feet. that is five feet above flood stage. the high water has shut down a bridge and forced the evacuation of many homes. meanwhile state officials in oklahoma have declared a state of emergency for 63 counties after heavy rains and flooding pounded the state on thursday. three people died as a result of the storms. and a memorial service will be held today for the two victims of that tourist boat crash in philadelphia. on friday, police divers recovered the body of a second victim and hoisted the body from the delaware river. the two victims were on an exchange trip if from hungary. federal officials will now investigate the shooting of an unarmed black man by a white transit officer in oakland for civil rights violations. johannes mehserle was convicted thursday for involuntary manslaughter prompting protests that resulted in nearly 80 arrests. mehserle already faces up to 14 years in prison. and the boston university student ordered to pay nearly three-quarters of a million dollar last year for illegally downloading and sharing songs online is getting a bit of a repreach. a federal judge ruled the amount is excessive and now she ll only have to pay one-tenth of that, $67,000. still a lot for a student. finally, we have all been battling the heat this weekend a it s even worse if you ve got a big fur coat on. so a south carolina zoo helped the animals here keep cool. workers turned on the hoses for these big guys. for the bears, they got a 35 gallon popsicle which were just as much fun as refreshing. and misters around the zoos also helped to keep everyone happy. looks like fun. over to you guys. we should install those on the mazza. big popsicles? scott williams, good to have you back. good morning. certainly we ll watch if showers and storms along the e good saturday morning to you. i m news 4 meteorologist chuck bell. finally some cloudy skies and rain showers moved into the area. we re off to a wet start on your weekend temperatures are in the mid-70s across the area right now. 75 in washington, 73 in arlington this morning, here s a look at radar over the last hour, a band of light to moderate rain showers moving east of the blue ridge heading into the metro area. rain showers primarily this morning and early this afternoon tapering off that s your latest weather. lester is this. turning to politics now, sarah palin is out with a new video invoking the power of mama grizzlies to fight what she calls a fundamental transformation taking place in this country. nora o donnell has the story for us. reporter: sarah palin has gone from hockey mom you know they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? lipstick. reporter: to calling herself mama grizzly in this new internet ad. in alaska, i always think of the mama grizzly bears that rise up on their behind legs when someone s coming to attack their cubs. reporter: she says this is the year when conservative women will get things done. it s a mom awakening in the last year and a half where women are rising up and saying, no, we ve had enough already because moms kind of just mow when something s wrong. reporter: palin is once again going on the offensive with a rally cry specifically directed at women. all across this country, women are standing up and speaking out for common sense slukss pl. reporter: and if she can motivate conservative women to vote it could be politically powerful. already palin has helped a large number of republican women running for office. look out, washington, because there s a whole stampede of pink elephants crossing the line. reporter: pink elephants. you can hear me? reporter: republican women like nikki haley for governor in south carolina. suzanne martinez for governor in mexico and mary fall len for governor in oklahoma. still, some wonder why she put together such a high caliber of high campaign style video whether it s part of a new effort to rebuild her image for a presidential run in 2012. how is that hope pi change which i stuff working out for you? reporter: if she wants to run for president, she d have to repair her approval ratings. 69% think she s not qualified to be president. whatever palin s political ambitions, it s clear this year she wants to send a message. we don t like this fundamental transformation and we re going to do something about it. reporter: for today, nora o donnell, nbc news, washington. and for more, we re joined by mark halperin, good morning. good to see you this morning. good morning, lester. so i m interested in your authorities in watching that ad. do you think it eat opening round of the 2012 campaign or is she simply trying to establish her credentials as a queen maker, a political queen maker? people talk about 2010 as the year of the woman. they re talking about women candidat candidates. i think sarah palin has got an incredible opportunity to make this the year of the woman voter. if she does that, i think i was a skeptic that she would run. this video has gone a long way. it s changing my view. i think she s very tough. this video shows an appeal, an emotion that no one on the republican part part can match. when i watch this, it reminded me that it really recaptures the narrative of when we first heard of sarah palin, when she was first pickeds as john mccain s running plate. and then things unraveled in terms of experience after that. did she lose control of her image somewhere along the way? reporter: she absolutely did. not only does it remind you of when she was picked, but the reasons mccain picked her are evident there. a lot of the imagery and the themes. the best way to make your image and the best way to try to get back your image is through paid media, through video. this is not an ad, this is a web video. but it shows the power for the first time most of us have ever seen of how sarah palin can be a performer in that produced highly controlled environment. that is a lot of the way you get your message out as a presidential candidate and i think again anyone who is underestimating sarah palin s potential it on enter this race and be a very strong player, maybe the frontrunner from day one, needs to look at this video and think about how she would come across again in that important medium of paid television advertising. it s potent as i say there s nobody else thinking of running for president as a republican who can touch what she did as as performer in that video. those of us who love to connect dots can t help but notice that levi johnston s apology it this week, hen comes this ad on the internet. again this that plays to this suspicion that maybe this is the buildup to a campaign. what do you think? it certainly makes it more likely and more possible. the fight she s had with levi johnston, again, you go back to that question of image, has been extraordinarily bad. it s reminded people of kind of the alaska side show that a lot of her life has been during that unraveling period, during the campaign and afterwards. this clears away the prospect of a real threat from levi johnston, it gives her an opportunity to craft her image separate from that fight. and, again, along with the video, maybe it s not planned. but certainly if you were betting on sarah palin s stock as a 2012 candidate, the combination of the video and this truce with levi johnston are into things that would cause to you put down more cash on the palin slot. i ve got to ask you, rnc chairman michael steele says he s not going to step down. nonetheless, there s been talk about who could replace him and sarah palin s name is brought up sometimes. would she want it? i don t think steele s going anywhere before january. she doesn t need that job. she s got her gig at fox, she s got her book, she s got her speaking. she s got a role in the 2012 midterms. she s bigger than the republican national committee right now. they might want her for the job, but she doesn t need it and i don t think that s any chance she ll end up there. mark halperin, thanks for coming on. thanks, lester. we turn to news now on the economy, including some good news about mortgage rates. they are at their lowest levels in nearly four decades. joining us once again is cnbc s melissa francis. good morning. 30 year mortgage rates are at 4.57, 15 year mortgage rate at 4.07. obviously a lot of weary potential home buyers, should these sway people into making that big decision? it s a tough call. right now there s a lot of people out there, the international monetary fund was the late toast jump on the band wagon and say we could see a double dip in housing. so there s always that chance that the price of houses could fall even further. at the same time, you re never going to time a bottom. if you re in a position to get a home that you would love to be in for five years or longer, it always make as lot of sense. and with mortgage rates where they are, a lot of people who already own homes are thinking about refinancinrefinancing. it s a simple skal could you lags. calculation. you have to put down how much money will you save every single month on one side. and on the other side, you have to add up all the fees that you ll pay to redo your mortgage. and just see how many months do you need to be in that house before it pays off. and are you likely to stay that long. chances are the answer is yes. it s still hard to get a mortgage right now. it s harder for qualify. if you re buying a house, you have to put more doan. but if you can get it done, it s a great time to borrow. and in term its of mortgage rate, you mentioned house prices, people deciding whether they will go even lower. what about the mortgage rates themselves? they haven t waep this low since the 1950s. can they go lower? they might go marginally lower as the federal reserve loosens the money supply more and more, but what are we talking about here? they are it at the lowest level that they have been in either your or my lifetime. how much lower do you want them to go? let switch gears and talk about the market. last week we were talking about the potential of a double dip recession. now we have more positive economic news. the market climbed 5% this week. so then now we re hearing people saying maybe the worse is over. i don t know. we ve seen this movie before. i hate to get too optimistic or too pessimistic, but we did have a blockbuster week in the market this week. some would argue that the volumes were light, there weren t that many traders in the game, a lot of people on vacation. the real thing to watch is corporate earnings which start in earnest on monday. you want to see what companies have to say about their outlook. are they starting to hire, is the worst behind h them, is the consumer coming back. that s going to tell us a lot and we re really going to seat markets start to react to that over the next week or two. all right, melissa francis, thank you. lebron james made his debut on the court in miami last night, along with two other playpla players who could help the heat head to the championships. here s tom costello. your miami heat! reporter: on the very court where they re expecting to make basketball history, miami opened its arms to its newest resident. lebron james! reporter: the hopes and dreams of this team and city aren t just riding on lebron james, but also on chris bosh and dwyane wade. three of the league s top scorers now a pricey miami triple threat. they have a superstar laden team that s expected to dominate the nba for the next five years. and that qualms dollars, the cash register is chiming down here. reporter: but this cleveland, they ve been burning lebron jerseys tearing down anything that reminds them of him. the franchise did everything for you. gave you everything you wanted to win. gave up on us, man. reporter: in a letter to cavalier fan, owner dan gilbert wrote i personally guarantee that the cleveland cavaliers will win an nba championship before the self titled former king wins one. but in miami, they ve moved on. already selling lebron t-shirts and talking of an all-new rivalry. that boston, l.a. stuff is over with. it s about to be l.a. and miami. it means that miami s going to be unstoppable for at least three years in a row. reporter: just because you have a star packed team doesn t mean they re definitely going win the title. it was thursday night when the king ended the speculation and made his announcement in a hyped prime time special. this fall i m going to take my talents to south beach and join the miami heat. reporter: wait, what did he say? take my talents to south beach. reporter: that s what i thought he said. there s only one problem. this is south beach. they don t play basketball on south beach. which makes you wonder, might there have been any other factors involved in this decision? all these beautiful women here and nice florida weather. the beach, the girls and the clubs. reporter: whatever his reason, cleveland s loss could well mean big wins here. for today, tom costello, nbc news, miami. a guy s got to do what a guy s got to do. it s been amazing watching the emotion that people are pouring in to this and how offended personally they are at his choice. ohio is his home state. cleveland was his town. i had great respect for him. i met him actually got to play with him it was more like a clinic, but i was on the court with a ball watching him go for a story we did. great guy. he s got a tremendous future. but no home coming parades anytime soon. i think he burn that had bridge. we ll be back in a moment, but first this is today on nbc. still to come, up close and personal with killer sharks. one man s risky business. plus, the best of lady gaga. her incredible performance right here on our plaza, but first, these messages. taking a live look outside. pretty soupy out there. it is humid. look 73 degrees. it s going to be cooler than you ve been enduring during the last few days. good morning it s saturday, july 10, 2010. i m kimberly suiters. in the news for today a man accused as posing as a metrobus driver and then crashing into a tree is under arrest today. william jackson dressed as a driver and then drove a bus off the lot. he then crashed the bus into a tree near 17th street and massachusetts avenue southeast around 4:00. he was caught and arrested a short time later. no one was injured in that accident. the city of rockville is still dealing with water restrictions after a huge main burst this weekend. customers are to stop all outside water use and split water use indoors. you want to not flush your toilet as often and fill up your washing machine and dishwashers before running them. a good conservation practice any time the year. your weather is up next, stay with us. a good saturday morning. i m news 4 meteorologist chuck bell. the clouds moved in overnight and rain showers as well. much appreciated rain showers moving back into the metropolitan area. light to moderate rain through the remainder of the morning hours. should be tapering off during the course of the afternoon. cloudy and muggy today. scattered showers. one or two rumbles of thunder. highs to the 70s. back to 90s tomorrow. lower humidity. nice little change. finally some need rainfall. we ll have another update on your local news coming up in 25 minutes. now we re back on a saturday morning, july 10th, 2010. it is a hot and steamy morning here in new york city and we want to thank everyone for coming out. we will head outside to say hello about if just a bin just . but coming up on today, deadly pursuit. the moment a diver comes face to face with a killer shark. he s the brafr underwater photographer who has faced off against one of the most feared and dangerous predators of the deep. it s all caught on tape. coming up, we ll meet him and find out what it s like to get upclose and personal with a killer shark. and then the real life thomas crown favaffair. we ll met apagent who spent 20 years infiltrating the underground art world. now he s coming forward with his story and tell us his secrets. a story you don t want to miss. and it was the hotly anticipated summer concert right here on our plaza. yesterday lady gaga, almost 20,000 people or little monsters as she calls them crowded on to the plaza friday and coming up we ll take a look at the morning with one of the most powerful women in music. and she survived even a massive rainstorm. survived it? she excelled. it made the last number. so we ll share those moments with you. but first, a big question a lot of people are asking. where is kyron horman? it s been over a month since he disappeared from his school and now his biological parents suspect kyron s stepmom had something to do with his disappearance. george lewis has the latest. reporter: in portland, oregon friday night, a candlelight vigil for kyron horman who was last seen june 5th. and although police are not said the last person who saw kyron, terry horman, his is suspect, the boy s mother, father, and stepdad have their suspicions about terry. unfortunately, i m kind of at that point where i m so angry i don t even have words. i just really want her to do the right thing. since her last statement thursday requesting that she cooperate with investigators, she has not contacted investigators and provided any information to assist in bringing kyron home. reporter: recently released court documents show kyron s father, kaine horman, in a request for a restraining order against the stepmother, stated that police have given him reason to believe that terry who are man n, is, quote, involved n ht disappearance of my son, kyron. further stating police told him terry attempted to hire someone to murder me. based on the briefings with law enforcement and the information provided, that s how i arrived at those conclusions. reporter: he s refused to elaborate further saying the emphasis has to be on the search for kyron. it is just that relentless focus to find him that drives us every day. putting the emotion aside and just doing everything we can to look for him. reporter: terry horman has denied having anything to do with kyron s disappearance. she s turned down requests for on-camera interviews. as the community indicawaits an hopes come home soon. we miss you. reporter: and prays for kyron s safe return home. for today, george lewis, nbc news, los angeles. clint van santa is an nbc analyst and former fbi criminal profiler. clint, good morning. and we should mention terry horman is still not named a suspect and yet we know that she s in the cross hairs of both the family and investigators. how much more do investigators need to name her a suspect or to make an arrest? really you don t need a label. you don t need to call her a person of interest or suspect or anything else. law enforcement s not concerned with that. what they re really concerned with is building a case against her and i think at this point they feel that should she have anything to do with the disappearance of her stepson, it s probably better to leave her out of jail so they can continue to build that investigation, build that case. if it stays centered on her, so much the better. but right now, she s already lawyered up and attaching another label to her doesn t move the investigation forward. is there any strategy to not arresting her at this point by investigators? well, i think there is. it my particular case if i was involved in this, i would want to see the pressure continue on her and any other suspect. we always look at motive in a case. we ve been told perhaps the motive is that she allegedly tried to hire a hit man to kill kyron s father seven months ago. that didn t work. if she was that angry, if she wanted to express that anger against him, another way might be to express it against him vis-a-vis his son, but something else we have to look at that s come out in the last couple of days, again, kyron s father, terry s husband, has suggested that she suffers from post-partum depression after the birth of their last child. so this is kind of a carrot and a stick. this is kind of saying here s a terrible motive for her to have continue somethi done something, but here s a psychological motive, too, so he s giving her that out that reason to saydy it but it wasn t my fault, it was this terrible beast within me. gr based on all that you ve seen and heard, if you ve a part of this investigator team, are you still defeating other resources to advice debating leadses other than terry horman some and the answer is absolutely yes. this stay as two track investigation. you have to center on her. there s enough in-consist insides cities, the stepfather says are the or the biological father says that terry allegedly failed two polygraphs. there s other inconsistencies in her story. but the last thing you want to do is be locked in on one person with all those resources and find out this is the one-half of one 1 respect about or whatever it was that even though one person looked guilty, there really is somebody else involved. so you keep those resources, you keep centered on your so-called person of interest at least as far as law enforcement is concerned, but you never rule out other suspects until you finally know what happened. and realize the whole goal of this of course is to bring this 7-year-old boy back home again. and speaking to that, clint, five weeks afters he disappeared, both of kyron s parents believe that he is still alive and they believe that terry is withholding information that could lead them to him. this is a tough question to ask given the circumstances, but how likely is that, that he could still be alive and still be found? well, number one, every parent clings to the hope. we all think in a case like this it s going to be like elizabeth smart or jaycee dugard, that they will beat the odds, theat whoever has this child may be holding him and based upon the emotional appeal of the family eventually release him. so we re going to leave that emotional porch light turned on the house and turned on inside the heart of the family. but we also realize in a case like this as the hours become days become weeks, the chances of a miracle really start to diminish. all right, clintd, thanks so much. we appreciate it. we ll swi and a good saturday morning. i m news 4 meteorologist chuck bell. we re hoof to a cloudy and wet start. people don t like rain on weekend but we need every drop it. outside right now temperatures are in the mid-70s. 75 in washington, 73 in frederick, maryland, 71 in martinsburg, west virginia. in the last hour light to moderate rain showers pushing into the metro area. most rain should be tapering off to late mor and for your latest weather 24 hours a day, you can always logon to weather.com. that s your latest weather. amy and lester? and still to come on today, catch me if you can. new details in the search for the so-called barefoot bandit. has he gone overseas some we ll find out. but up next, they re the most feared and endangered predators of the deep. the man who came face to face with a killer shark. but first, these messages. to film themselves taking the activia 14-day challenge. hi. i m emily ilic. i m going to start the activia 14-day challenge today. problems that i have are, you know, irregularity. i do have some doubts if it works. i think it s really good. um. i like the flavors. i think from being a skeptic in the beginning i do think that activia actually works. help regulate your digestive system. take the activia challenge. it works or it s free. activia [ buzz! ] [ beep-beep! ] it s. time! shh! reporter: well, thad allen in a statement last night said that it could take anywhere from 7 to 10 days to put all the pieces in place to make this system work. it s a system they hope will work, there are no guarantees. and not only do they hope it will collect the oil, but they also hope it will stabilize the well and, therefore, make it easier for the relief wells to kill the well when they get to the point where they intersect that pipe. anne thompson in louisiana for us. thanks very much. and now here s amy. and as you know, and as most people know, the oil spill is taking an increasingly heavy toll on the wildlife in the area. on friday, the louisiana department of wildlife went out and rescued sea turtles. nbc news science and environment expert jeff cohen was with help and he joins us from the audundu had and you can yacht aquatic energy. i m told you were able to rescue five sea turtles yesterday, four which have are endangered speak cease. how are they doing this morning cease. how are they doing this morning? yesterday we went out with mandy and her team and we rescued five endangered sea turtles. we found one green turtle and we found four kemps ridley. i m actually here really a quite standard morning here cleaning a sea turtle. this is a kemps ridley. critically endangered species. the turtles that we rescued in the open waters of the gulf have now found their way to this facility where they get hydrated, where they get medicine. in this case where they actually get cleaned of the oil. you can tell us how you re cleaning the turtle and what the process is like, how long it takes and what their chances are once you ve been able to do that? sure. well, right now i m with michelle kelly and she s a marine biologist. and the important thing to keep in mind is that there are very few of these kemp ridleys left. there s less than 5,000 left. so when these turtle comes in, they re covered with oil. and the first thing you wouldn t do is stabilize them. yes, immediately. our staff does a blood draw so they can look at their blood and start to get a better understanding of what they need as far as hydration and maybe vitamins, iron. so that s done first thing and then we take them over once that s done and clean them. do their first initial cleaning. this morning we re on their second cleaning. but after the first cleaning is done, we take them back and then the veterinarians will administer all their fluids and vitamins. and this is such a really technical facility. state-of-the-art medication and intervention. but when it comes time to clean them, use just your regular old dish washing soap. wnd know they typically lay their nests on the beach there is and we know that some of this oil is now washing up on the shore where these nests are. is anything being done right now to try to save those nests? well, there s a big effort underway being directed by the u.s. fish and wildlife service where they re it actually relocating a whole generation of eggs from contaminated waters to safer beaches. actually from places like alabama to the coastline of florida. and by doing that, they re hopefully giving those turtle a second chance for survival. but the truth is it really requires a huge team. they have this saying it take as village to raise a child. well, it pretty much takes a village to save the sea turtle like this.well, it pretty much village to save the sea turtle like this. at the have so vulnerable to the impact of this toxic oil spill. we re now on day 282. are things getting better or worse for the wildlife in the area? that s the $10 million question, isn t it. this is what i can tell you. there are hundreds of people on the front lines, they are fighting to save every creature they can, folks from the u.s. fish and wildlife service, louisiana department of wild life and pishryes, tri-state bird rescue, the audubon nature institute, all these folks are working together nap e. the bad news is until they turn this oil off, we will toip have casualties. and what you need to know is that even those these sea turtle are rescued, they can t be released until the water is clean and the oil stops hemorrhaging out from the bottom of the ocean. i know so many people are appreciative of your efforts and all the other scientists and people working to help save those animals. thanks so much for your time this morning. thanks, amy. time to take another check of the morning s headlines. let s turn to melissa francis at the news desk. good morning. we begin with the latest in that russian spy story. on a tarmac in vienna yesterday, four men who were spying for the west in russia were exchanged for ten russian spies arrested in the u.s. nearly two weeks ago. the spies for each sidewalked between an american 767 and russian jet. two of the four pen arrived friday at dulles. the other two landed in london. and now on a grim anniversary, on monday, it will be six months since that horrific earthquake rocked haiti killing more than 200,000 people. as nbc s robert bazell reports from port-au-prince, life is still far from normal. reporter: six months after the earthquake, the situation in haiti remains grim. more than a million and a half people are homeless living in more than 1,000 camps like this one. some get to live in tents, but most live it structures made of wood, cloth, anything that can be salvaged from the damaged buildings. one piece of good news is that most children have been vaccinated against in-fwek issues disease by international aid organizations and the same organizations have given fresh water to the camps which has prevented the outbreak of infectious disease that many people worried about. but still most countries have given far less in aid than they promised. haitian government has done a terrible job of coordinating the entire effort and everyone expects this terrible situation to go on for many years. from port-au-prince, for today, i m robert bazell, nbc news. in texas, they are bracing for the rio grande to crest again, h this days after heavy rain has caused flooding and dozens of homes to be evacuated. the river is expected to crest at 55 feet. that is five feet above flood stage. and finally, vice president joe biden crackeded some jokes on the tonight show last night. the vice president traded ban der with jay leno on a number of topics, including the russian spies. let me ask you something. do we have any spies that hot? let me make it clear. it wasn t my idea to send her back. biden said it was fair because we got back four really good ones. i don t know, unless they send us george clooney, we got hosed about. i am so with you on that. melissa fran says at the news and a good saturday morning. i m news 4 meteorologist chuck bell. right here where we live, temperatures in the mid-70s now and plenty of rain coming down across the area. fear not these rain showers are not going to last all day long. the majority of the rain will be out of here by about lunch time today. temperature 75 downtown right now. you can see that light to moderate rain showers pushing on through. the rain is back east of the blue ridge and heading for the downtown area. suns now back to lester. scott, thanks. imagine being asleep in bed and waking up to a 300 pound bear walking around your house. that was the real and terrifying case for one colorado man. lucky for jack, he walked away with only minor injuries and joining us now is jack. thanks for coming on. thanks, lester, good morning to you. i understand your 15-year-old was upstair, you and your wife were asleep. he woke you up to say, dad, there s a bear in the house. what did you think? i didn t quite believe him to be honest with you. we ve had raccoons and that kind of stuff coming through a window before. we thought it was something else. and you picked up a weapon and went downstairs. yes, i met him at the top of the steps and he had a baseball bat, so i took that and went done the steps and as i came around the corner in the basement, here was a 320 pound black bear looking right back at me. and your first instinct was let me see if i can get a door open and shoo him out. how did that work out for issue. not so between. the door was behind me and i was trying to reach behind me to even the door and of course it was locked and the bear didn t want to give me that much time to unlock it, so he charged at that point and took a bite on to my leg. he got a piece of you. how bad is the wound? the wound is healing nicely. the emergency services guys took good care of it and it s going to be fine. i understand he got any guess there s garage door and you ve got garbage in the ga roonlg and that lured him in and then a faulty latch let him into the house itself. how did you eventually get him out? i know you wildlife experts. yes, we called the local sheriff and department of wildlife were there within a few minutes actually. so that was great. and what ended up happening was the bear had moved upstairs to our loft area and was sitting at the top of the steps when the sheriff s department came in and the department of wildlife and they basically ushered us out of the house and the bear tried to climb out an upstairs second story window ut out on to the g roonlg roof and that s eventually how he got out and fell off the roof and jumped in to the backyard and took off. and i understand they had to shoot him eventually because it s a danger to public safety. by the way, your wife and daughter were upstairs during all this. were you afraid at some point that they were going to encounter this bear? absolutely. my wife and son were in the room bedroom right upstairs and my main thought really was after i encountered the bear was let s just keep him away from the rest of the family and keep him away from the rest of the house if we can. so that s why he and i did a little dance a couple of times as he went up the steps and i just kept him up there until police came. listen, jack, we appreciate you sharing your story. we re glad that the wound wasn t more serious and you re okay. thanks, lester. still to come, the international manhunt for the barefoot bandit. but next, tracking down stolen pieces of art. the real life thomas crown affair after these messages. securely, any time, anywhere. our e signature technology lets you sign. your documents from home, at your convenience. we ve helped over three-quarters of a million families. refinance or purchase their home. it s how we ve done things at quicken loans for 25 years now. - that s why i love. - i love. i love being a home loan expert. it s really good. do you see it? it s called hope. hope? yeah. hope. i don t see any hope. i don t see any hope in here. you can t see it there, but you can see it here. cause every time you get a happy meal or a mighty kids meal some of the money goes to ronald mcdonald house charities. to help lots of kids and families. hope s good! happy meals. the simple joy of helping. finding love can an lot of work, but now you can outsource it. a visual all date assistant is simply at your service. reporter: creating profiles, searching for potential dates, sending e-mails, finding love online can feel like a part-time job. but now you can hire help. profile helper.com will write your profile and other sites will be your full service dating assistant. scott valdez s company will play the game of online dating for you. we start off with a two hour interview. we get to know a bunch of information about the client so we can create their online dating profile and get them set up on a number of online dating sites, browse those sites for candidates and put those on a short list. then we have the openers. they send the initial messages. once they ve solicited a response, then we have close ha is to get an agreement to talk on the phone or meet off line in person. reporter: max is an opener about. what do i is sort of like a direct marketer. i write an e-mail like an advertiser would write sales copy. reporter: a written first impression expertly crafted. i m looking for the profile for anything unique that stands out that would be a good way to open a conversation. so i m looking for my angle. first they think do i is i try to come up with a subject line that draws her in, that makes her want to open it. now i need to come up with an ice breaker. the question is very important. it s what marketers call a call to action. when you re giving your question, you re making it easy and you re making it fun for her to respond. reporter: it s the first step towards a first date, but not everything can be outsourced. at the end of the day, you know, it s up to them to make an impression on the date. what we do is we get them there. and here with more of the pros and cons of outsourcing your dating life is michelle callahan. good morning. good morning. i m just going to say, i m sorry, if i was trying to talk to somebody online and then i find out i wasn t even talking to that person, i was talking to their virtual assistant, i might be a little peeved. i think a lot would be. it s inappropriate, it s kind of morally ambiguous. it s not what people think. there s already so much confusion about people being who they say they are online that the last thing we need are professionals pretending to be people when they think they re talking to the real person. is it so time consuming? the online dating world, is it that overwhelming? i think the services is targeted to people who are really busy, they don t want to go through all the profiles. and they may even be a little concerned about their own ability to present themselves well. and then i question their ability to present themselves when when it comes to the first date. if you can t be comfortable being yourself in the beginning, how are you going to walk straight in? you re reading what you allegedly said and then you re going into a date. you want to have already been sort of warmed up. people want to see that are you who you said you were online. and the other argument is well, who cares how it started, who cares if an assistant actual actually broke the igs with clever marketing. if this is an actual connection, love connection, it at the end, and there is an all relationship that s formed because of it. i don t agree. i think that is still a problem because it s a slippery slope. if you re willing to let someone else pretend to be you, then what else won t you snay will you say that you re not married when you are just to get the date and once we re this love, it s okay? will huh say you re a millionaire if you re not only to later reveal the troous about yourself? how would you suggest you best or you accurately describe yourself if you re going through this online process, what are some important things to remember as you re trying to let other people know who you really are? h. i think you need to just be yourself. we need to stop pretending and trying to dress everything up because people like quirkiness, people like realness. they don t like when people exaggerate. don t you think you can see some of those little pitch lines he was talking about? i think i would be like, yeah, that looks like a pitch line. exactly. and that s what people don t like about online dating. they don t like all the pretending. they want a real connection with people. and we already have match maker, speed dating, millions of people online dating sites. but are these types of services the future of modern dating or do you think this is just a phase? i think a lot of people will continue to use the services because we re busier and busier all the time and it just seems like a quick short cut and i think people are a little afraid to put themselves out there. so it s easier if we let somebody else do it. easier, but maybe not better. definitely not better. michelle callahan, thanks so much. coming up tomorrow on today, outsourcing your breakup. that s even worse. and upnext, eat this, not that. the smoothie edition. this is today on nbc the kincaids live here. across the street, the padillas. ben and his family live here, too. ben s a re/max agent, and he s a big part of this community. there are lots of reasons why re/max agents average more sales than other agents. experience, certainly. but maybe it s also because they care about the markets they serve and the neighbors who rely on them. nobody sells more real estate than re/max. visit remax.com today. this is power with efficiency. this is an interior that exceeds even the promise of the exterior. this is the all-new jaguar xj. the stunning result of taking a very different road. this morning on eat this, not that, smoothies. if you always assumed that they are healthy and low calorie, think again. here to give us the low down is author of eat this, not that. and his latest book, drink this, not that. great to see you about. when i hear fruit, it must be good. but there are a lot of health food imposters out there including smoothies. so this is a smoothie splakdown. and the alternative is right in the same product. here what you have is you have this this surf rider strawberry jamba juice. it sounds great, but it has a shark attack of sugar right there. this has 580 calories and 126 grams of sugar. so cue the drum roll from wipeout. this is the give lend of 23 kitkat sticks. if you have the strawberry nirvana, you re lopping off 300 calories. it s only 300 calories. you get like half the sugar. and you re getting the vitamins and minerals you need. don t have to lead the store, just order something different. and these are smoothies in a bottle. exactly. and these are both pretty good for you, but the difference here is if you get the berrys go mega super drink, it s over 300 calories. the give reequivalent of these o twinkies. instead go for the red rap soddy. you ll love off 100 calories. it may not seem like a lot, but one smart swap like that a day means you ll lose ten pounds a year. the next product is from bba rob bibs. the mango blast. leave it to an ice cream company to completely screw up the smoothie. the smoothie is always worse at baskin robbin sflt. it has 620 calories. if you try consider what means, that s 35le spoolfuls of sugar that they re putting in to this smoothie. like eating all these puddings. the giequivalent of all thes butter scotch puddings. so if you get this strawberry fruit blast, still not great, but it s 50 grams of sugar less. and good tasting. but when you see the word smoothie here, just be very afraid because it s not what it seems. we re not done yet because we have more here. so here we re at cold stone creamery. again, another ice cream store doing smoothies which is always tough. 600 calories in this strawberry mango got to have it. so it s more like got to have half of it. this is the calorie equivalent of these 4 1/2 devil s squares. if you re going to be at cold stone, get the sinless mango. this is 270 calories. you ll going to save yourself 350 calories. again, make a swap like that every day, that s 35 pounds over the course of a year. we ll talk about the smoothie king now and that s the king of what? this is a medium. 32 ounce. i don t know at what point you go from a cup to a bucket, but this is 1024 calories. this is its peanut power plus. so if you have to gain like 20 pounds for a movie role, this is what you want to be drinking. but just keep in mind the 161 gramses of sugar. the 40 spoonfuls of sugar is the equivalent of these 15 reese s peanut butter cups. so if you re you re at smoothie king, get the high protein banana strawberry and you ll save yourself 700 calories. the key is you re right in the same store and make heldier alternatives. and dunkin donuts. this is very uncool of them to take their have a have a nail will bean, 650 calories and it s got 129 grams of sugar. so it is the equivalent of these seven hershey s take 5 chocolate bars. so right there, this is as syrup pi as a pancake eating contest. if you get the tropicana orange colada, it s330 calories, and you re saving yourself hundreds of calories. all about being an informed eater. david, always appreciate having on you. we re back, but first these messages. no matter what we re buying. and since double miles add up quick. romans! get em!
