we tried that top down approach. it's what caused the mess in the first place. i believe the only way to create an economy built to last is to strengthen the middle class. asking the wealthy to pay a little more so we can pay down our debt in a balanced way. so that we can afford to invest in education, manufacturing, and home-grown american energy for good middle class jobs. sometimes politics can seem very small. but the choice you face, it couldn't be bigger. ♪ i'm barack obama and i approve this message. the redskins' park where a staggering 24,600 spectators turned out for fan appreciation day. most of that crowd was there to see you know who, the new rookie quarterback rg3. dave owens is here with this story. >> what's up bruce? the full forecast coming up. i got the chance to start my own business. i know what it's like to hire people and to make ends meet. from those experiences, i had the chance of running the olympics. the games were in real trouble. there'd been way too much spending. and in massachusetts i found a budget that was badly out of balance. our legislature was 85% democrat. and every one of the four years i was governor, we balanced the budget. i want to use those experiences to help americans have a better future. we believe in our future. we believe in ourselves. we believe the greatest days of america are ahead. i'm mitt romney and i approve this message. nasa's curiosity rover is now zooming toward mars with about a day to go until the landing attempt. the space agency says the nuclear powered rover appears to be on course. curiosity is expected to drop through the martian atmosphere and attempt to set the six wheels down on the surface sometime tomorrow night. >> we've designed the spacecraft to basically handle all the conditions that we've seen in past years whether they're clear or dusty. but we continue to monitor it in realtime getting data from the orbiters at mars every day this week to make sure we understand what conditions the spacecraft will encounter as it's flying through the atmosphere and just how accurately we can expect to land. >> the rover is designed to primarily search for evidence that mars may have once had conditions favorable to some form of life. it's a $2.5 billion mission. we were just talking -- olga i think that's a lot 06 money. you put that $2.5 billion into the economy and give it to the country's people? and -- i don't know. something happens. >> but so many years in the planning they don't really know for sure whether or not this hinge is going to really -- thing is really going to touch down. >> that's $2.5 billion? hot out there today. >> it's hot. almost desert hot for most of us in the d.c. area. the temperatures today got into the middle 90s and in fact reagan national made it up to 96 today. we're still looking on radar for those pops of showers. everything so far today has missed the metro region. in fact it's looking great from our michael & son weather camera at the white house right now. mainly clear skies. we're calling it mostly sunny to partly sunny. into the later evening hours. but for right now, temperatures have been holding steady. mainly around the middle range 90s for most of us. and again, with that humidity creeping in it's feeling more like the upper 90s close to 100 degrees in some locations. we're going to continue to pump in some south and southwesterly wind flow as we head in toward the later evening hours. and i think a few of us especially north and west of town could see a little pop of a shower later on today and we'll keep on monitoring that for you. right now temperatures are sliding back in arlington down to 91. 90-degrees in springfield. but still sitting in those middle range 90s as you head up that i-95 corridor in toward beltsville and baltimore. it does look like we're going to be in for a possibility for a few showers and storms tonight. you can see most of that action skirting the mountains and moving primarily up into central pennsylvania. some of that has spilled across the maryland line and i do expect a little bit of development down to the south and that puts us at risk for some stormy weather later on tonight. i do think that for most of us, it will be a fairly nice evening. but folks who are headed out to the first pitch of the marlins versus the nationals, temperatures should hold in the lower 90s by the time the game starts at 7:05. but the last pitch though temperatures should back down into the this middle range 80s and we'll keep the winds out of the south at about 15 miles per hour on average. so some showers and thunderstorms possible this afternoon and evening. most of us will stay in the clear though and get hit though we'll have some heavy rainfall in pockets for sunday another hot and humid day. that's how we're finishing off the weekend but things change tomorrow afternoon and evening. a front is moving closer to the area and that could stir up some late day shower and storm opportunities. some of those could turn severe by tomorrow evening or tomorrow night. so here's how we look with our futurecast forecast model. mainly partly cloudy skies into the afternoon tomorrow. i would say the early morning hours look pretty good as far as keeping the metro area dry. but by late day, those widespread showers and thunderstorms will start to develop some of those could be a little bit heavy at times. then into the afternoon and evening you can see the front overnight into monday morning. gets a little bit closer and that will leave some steady rain across our southern counties and most of that will exit the area by late in the day on monday. so the forecast will improve through the week. lows tonight down into the 70s for most of us and we're talking about mainly cloudy conditions as we go to sunrise but tomorrow afternoon, partly sunny. and not so bad as the temperatures should make it out of those upper 80s to lower and mid 90s across the board. it looks like the temperatures will be fairly hot and muggy to move on through. this extended forecast for the nextly days or so basically looking at up the date planner hot and humid. keeping it in the yellow for the next three days. so -- close to 95 degrees for tomorrow. some of those southern zones will hit those middle range 90s by monday with mostly cloudy skies. we're going to back it down into the upper 80s. it will get a little bit stormy though early in the morning on monday. late day should look just fine but that color yellow will stick around until tuesday. now behind that front the temperatures are going to adjust a little bit and we'll get the northwest wind flow a little bit and even some westerly wind flow. that takes us down to upper 80s and lower 90s for next week and actually the forecast for next weekend is not looking too bad at least not extreme with the upper 90s but it will begin to build back some of the humidity into next weekend. >> you tell me -- >> if we get enough rain tomorrow and the next day could be a possibility. fans leave satisfied tonight? >> yeah, i mean you saw everything out there. you were a big redskins fan. i tell you your brethren were out there, this afternoon. lot of love for the burgundy and gold. 24,650 going through the gates at ashburn. the sights and sounds of redskins fan fest. you had the band and you had everything. we're going to bring that do you and a great day for the olympians and a local olympian as well. katie ledecky doing her thing. you're going to hear from the bethesda native coming up next in sports. if you have copd like i do, you know how hard it can be to breathe and what that feels like. copd includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. spiriva helps control my copd symptoms by keeping my airways open a full 24 hours. plus, it reduces copd flare-ups. spiriva is the only once-daily inhaled copd maintenance treatment that does both. and it's steroid-free. spiriva does not replace fast-acting inhalers for sudden symptoms. tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, glaucoma, trouble urinating, or an enlarged prostate. these may worsen with spiriva. discuss all medicines you take, even eye drops. stop taking spiriva and seek immediate medical help if your breathing suddenly worsens, your throat or tongue swells, you get hives, vision changes or eye pain, or problems passing urine. other side effects include dry mouth and constipation. nothing can reverse copd. spiriva helps me breathe better. does breathing with copd weigh you down? ask your doctor if spiriva can help. we should rebel he's a rookie. -- remember he's a rookie. defensive coordinators are going to be waiting for him and all kind of schemes for the kids. he's going to throw interceptions. >> peyton manning threw 28 in the rookie season. they struggle in the first year. matthew stafford from the lions throw 20 from the rookie season. >> how do you remember that? >> i study. although some would disagree. redskins fan appreciation day gang is exactly what it sounds like. fans flock to the team's training facility to show their love for the burgundy and gold. conversely the team goes all out to produce show for them. it's a mutual admiration society. in fact slightly more than 24,000 showed up today about 5,000 shorter than last season's record. even the reverend redskin was there the guy who starts spouting off about the redskins. you heard a lot of rg3 channels that was for sure but he wasn't the only one. a lot of love for the team today. >> go redskins! >> number one. >> number one! >> i think we need to strengthen our line up a little better but that's why we got rg3 so he can run out on all sides and get away if the pocket. >> bigger program right now. i like it when rg3 came here, he made a difference i think. >> they are excited about the upcoming season. the team has an off day tomorrow. thursday night first preseason game at buffalo. can you believe it? wow. training camp officially ends august 14th. saturday august 25th is rg3 versus andrew luck. redskins and colts preseason game number three. season opener september 9th at new orleans. you can almost understand if katie ledecky started talking with the teenage high pitched squeal during the interview after her performance at the olympics. she's a teenager. well, she didn't. she was poised and collected like a wily vet and more evidence she is mature beyond her years. i tell you what, her performance yesterday was well beyond anyone's expectations. ledecky a bethesda native blew out the competition in the 800- meter freestyle. she broke janet evans' 23-year- old record and almost broke a world record. this is from a girl only 15 years old gang. youngest u.s. olympian at these games. i say wow. here's what she had to say. >> i didn't feel any pressure at all going into it. i was a lot more nervous for my prelims race than i was for this race. walking out on the deck before the race, the crowd was amazing. and i just -- used all the energy that they were bringing and put into my race and my lane and just focused on my own race. >> wow. no pressure. that's pretty school cool. all right meanwhile, tennis, receive rya williams obliterated russia's maria sharapova. it took her 45 minutes to win a game. receive rya's earns her the folden slam. the men's basketball team meanwhile nearly upset by lithuania. they trailed late. the lithuanians leading and then lebron and company taking over and they win 99-94. wild. that's incredible stuff. and so -- is this. oscar pistorius is his name. he has been battling to belong on the lick stage for a very long time. he is not like other runners in london. do what you normally do when i come up on your screen. turn away. i'm just joking bruce. i'm really just joking. here's what happened today. he's the first double amputee to ever run in the track and field and he has made it to the semifinals. that is awesome. meanwhile, michael phelps finishing up his olympic run, gold medal today four by 100 relay. 22nd medal overall. here's the little league world series update. the team from great falls started yesterday with a win. tonight they'll play a team from south carolina. we'll update you on that and also, there's a te
