Des Moines Register U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley was escorted out of the halls of Congress, and other members of Iowa’s delegation sheltered in place Wednesday as armed supporters of the outgoing president stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the peaceful transition of power to President-elect Joe Biden. The chaotic scene erupted as supporters of Republican President Donald Trump marched on the Capitol, demonstrated outside its gates and eventually breached its walls, halting debate during a joint session of Congress. Congress was scheduled to vote on whether to accept the results of the Electoral College amid challenges from a number of Republican lawmakers.
